Anna Laurel, co-anchor of ABC Channel 11's 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Eyewitness News, will host the city of Rocky Mount's fifth annual Paws in the Park and Dog Park Grand Opening.
Laurel, who started her broadcast career in Missoula, Mont., has worked with ABC 11 since 2013. She has also worked in Phoenix where she reported and filled in at the anchor desk for KPNX 12 News.
Throughout her career, Laurel has been active in many charities, including Teen Challenge, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Ronald McDonald House and Race for the Cure.
Laurel will emcee several of the special pet events taking place on Saturday, April 11, 2015, including the pet parade, pet fashion show and a pet costume competition.
The events will begin with the Dog Park Grand Opening, highlighting the city's new nine-acre Best Friends Dog Park, one of the largest off-leash dog parks in the state.
"We are inviting families and dog owners to attend this year's Paws in the Park," says Alex Langley, director of the Rocky Mount Senior Center and coordinator for this year's event. "Not only are we promising the special events for pets, but there will also be food trucks, music and vendors, as well as K-9's in flight, which are known as premier entertainers."
According to Langley, K-9's in Flight is a frisbee dog entertainment team previously seen on the Discovery Channel, ESPN, The Disney Channel, Animal Planet, HBO, The Jerry Lewis Telethon, MTV Music Television and more.
Paws in the Park will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Dog Park Grand Opening ceremonies will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. All events will take place at the Best Friends Dog Park, 1301 Dawson Place, adjacent to Sunset Park. Registration will be needed for all pet events, and proof of rabies shot and vaccinations are mandatory at registration.

Lions Honor Top Police Officer, Firefighter
Provided by the Rocky Mount Telegram
Two first responders were recognized recently by the Rocky Mount Luncheon Lions Club.
Each year, members of the departments nominate their coworkers for the honor and the administrative staff select the winner. Fire Capt. Alvin Leon "Lee" Bailey II was announced as the Firefighter of the Year and Police Officer Luke Knorr, who was nominated by his lieutenant, was named the Police Officer of the Year.
Knorr, a Texas native, joined the Rocky Mount Police Department two years ago after serving time in the U.S. Marine Corps. He has been assigned to patrol since.
Bailey is a native of Whitakers who was a volunteer firefighter before joining the Rocky Mount Fire Department in 1996 where he worked his way to senior firefighter in 2002, engineer in 2006 and was promoted to captain in 2012.
Rocky Mount police officials also selected Bill Matthews as Civilian Employee of the Year and Rebecca Alston as Telecommunicator of the Year.

New Program Allows Rocky Mount Public Utility Customers
to Choose Bill Due Date
City of Rocky Mount Public Utility customers now have an opportunity to choose the due date for their utility bill. The Chosen Due Date Program began last month, and according to Finance Director Amy Staton, it provides customers with the flexibility to pay their bill on a date better suited for them, often coinciding with a pay day. Customers must select from four available due dates each month-the 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th.
Customer service staff have worked on the project since August 2013, with a soft launch beginning in 2014. While changes were made to the printed bill to reflect an option for a chosen due date, no changes will be made regarding meter readings.
Customers who choose to participate in the program may still utilize budget billing, equal pay, automatic bank draft and Winter Assistance for Rocky Mount.
Customers must have a current balance to participate in the program. Staff will work with individuals who have a past due balance but want to be a part of the Chosen Due Date Program. For more information, call 252-972-1250, or click here.

Rocky Mount Public Utilities Celebrates National Safe Digging Month
This month marks the eighth annual National Safe Digging Month, reminding North Carolina residents to always call 811 three business days before beginning any digging project. National Safe Digging Month is formally recognized by the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate and has traditionally earned the support from nearly every state governor across the country.
When calling 811, homeowners and contractors are connected to North Carolina 811, the local one call center, which notifies the appropriate utility companies of their intent to dig. Professional locators are then sent to the requested digging site to mark the approximate locations of underground lines with flags, paint or both. Every six minutes an underground utility line is damaged because someone decided to dig without first calling 811. Striking a single line can cause injury, repair costs, fines and inconvenient outages. Every digging project, no matter how large or small, warrants a call to 811.
Rocky Mount Public Utilities (RMPU) encourages area residents to visit www.rockymountnc.gov/utilities or www.nc811.org for more information about digging safely.

City to Host Sunset Tennis Courts Grand Opening
The city of Rocky Mount is pleased to present the new Sunset Tennis courts to the Rocky Mount community. On Saturday, April 25, 2015 at 11 a.m., the public is invited to join city officials at Sunset Park for a grand opening of the new Sunset Tennis courts. The courts officially opened on Saturday, March 28, 2015. However, due to rain, the official grand opening was postponed.
At the grand opening, you will have an opportunity to play on and view the renovation project, which consisted of the removal of trees near the courts. New fencing, a state-of-the art lighting system and new netting are a part of the renovation. There are now eight new full-size tennis courts. Bleachers and a shade structure for players and spectators have also been added.
For more information on the Sunset Tennis courts grand opening, call 252-972-1151.
