Tick Time
It's tick time again. Those nasty crawling critters are ubiquitous.
It is suspected that the increase in the
deer and coyote population, along with the decline of the fox population, are to blame for the abundance of ticks.
Fox feed on the small mammals that are needed for the full life cycle of the ticks.

We all know there are many topical applications available for reducing tick infestation. Check the label to decide which chemicals are in the product to determine your comfort level for exposure.
Topical pump sprays such as Cedar Cide, can reduce the number of ticks that attach to the skin. Click to see how a walking tick reacts to the spray. |
When doing a tick check, use a fine tooth comb to catch the wandering ticks. Back combing is most helpful.
The daily tick check should start at the toes and work up to the trunk, then finishing at the nose and tail.

If a tick is not attached, then use sticky tape to catch the insect.
Clear tape will allow for identification of the tick species. This tick is the wood tick also called the American dog tick know. It is scientifically speaking as Dermacentor variabilis. If you find an attacked tick this video can help on how to remove it. View video...

Engorged ticks can be saved in a container or a ziplock bag with a moistened paper towel. Lab testing can identify the tick and test for known pathogens such as lyme disease, erhlichiosis and anaplasmosis.

Food Sensitivities
Food allergies, sensitivities or intolerance can have a wide range of symptoms. Itchy infected skin, infected ears or irritable bowels are the most common symptoms.
The primary food allergens are: corn, wheat, soy, beef, eggs, and milk. Testing allows for isolating the most allergenic foods to reduce symptoms.
A blood sample, saliva test or elimination diet can help determine the allergens.
After submitting the samples, we can find the best diet with the least amount of allergens. Less allergen exposure can reduce unwanted symptoms.
