The Express
Roseburg First United Methodist Church
The week of April 24
Engage God... Engage One Another... Engage Life!

Pastor Doreen Barlow shares responsibilities between this church and the Dillard-Winston UMC down the road.  Here she serves on staff as the Minister of Discipleship. There, she is appointed as the Local Pastor of the church. Because she is leading worship at Dillard-Winston on Sunday mornings, it is a rare thing for her to be leading worship here.  Which is why I have invited her to preach at RFUMC at least three times a year. I think it's time for everyone to get better acquainted with Doreen.

The first pulpit exchange happens this Sunday and Pastor Barlow will preach at both of our worship services.  I'll be leading worship and preaching at Dillard-Winston UMC. I know that Doreen has been working hard on her sermon and I hope that you will support her with your presence on Sunday and extend to her the warm reception that RFUMC is known for.

This issue of the Express provides an update for the next week's happenings around Roseburg's First United Methodist Church.  If this weekly newsletter comes as a surprise to you, it's probably because we've added you to the mailing list!  If you don't want to receive the Weekly Express every Thursday, simply scroll to the bottom of the page to use the SafeUnsubscribe option.  Uncheck the Weekly Express and you'll no longer receive it

The hope, of course, is that you'll stay with us and up to date on all the great things going on in and through this church!

Blessings -

Pastor Scott Harkness

Visit General Conference
May 16 & 17
Wanda Eddy is finalizing arrangements for the trip to Portland to observe and experience the General Conference of The United Methodist Church.  This a rare opportunity to witness lay and clergy delegates from around the world discuss and make policy for our denomination, as well as inspiring worship and presentations.  The group will drive up on Monday, May 16, and stay one night.  They will return to Roseburg later the next day. Please sign up at the Welcome Table SOON so hotel arrangements can be made. If you have questions please contact Wanda Eddy at 541-679-3576.

Sign Campaign Update
We are nearly ready to place the order for the new church sign on Harvard Ave. but it's not too late to make a contribution to the project. Checks can be made out to First United Methodist Church with the word "sign" written in the memo line.
Brochures describing the project are on the Welcome Table.
United Methodist Camp Information
2016 camp information booklets are available now on the Welcome Tables and displays in the entry hall and in the Fellowship Hall.  Check out the variety of camps being offered this year for children, youth, adults and families at our six camps in the Oregon-Idaho Conference.  There are even some camps offered off-site.  Register soon as some camps fill up quickly.

Camp scholarships are available.  Please check with the church office.
Outreach Opportunities this Week

FISH Food Offering
Remember to bring your food donations for the FISH Food Pantry to church each Sunday. Place your donations in the FISH Chuck Wagon near the entrance.  These are the suggested food item(s).
  • April 24:  Baking goods- flour, sugar, cornmeal, etc.
  • May 1:  Baby food
Volunteer Opportunities at FISH Food Pantry
The FISH Food Pantry is in need of additional volunteers. The Pantry is in particular need of volunteers that can occasionally fill-in on somewhat short notice when a regular volunteer is out of town, ill, or otherwise not available. A few more volunteers are also needed on a one-day per week regular weekly basis. The volunteer shifts are three hours. Volunteers are asked to be at the Pantry 30 minutes before it opens to help set up for the day, and stay to help cleanup for 30 minutes after the Pantry closes.
The Pantry is open for clients the following times:
  • Monday and Wednesdays afternoons 1:30 to 3:30 pm
  • Thursday and Friday mornings 9:30 to 11:30 am
There are several volunteer jobs at the FISH Food Pantry, including client intake (use computer to enter data and client application), greeter (explains how Pantry works to new clients), stocking (moves food from storage area to food kiosks), and bagging/ client checkout. The only position where specialized orientation/ training is needed is client intake. However, most every task requires some people skills. Additionally, volunteers are needed with a pickup truck that could occasionally haul pallets of food from the UCAN warehouse to the Pantry on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for one to one and half hour.
