The Express
Roseburg First United Methodist Church
The week of March 20
Engage God... Engage One Another... Engage Life!

The CROSS WORDS Lenten sermon series wraps up this Palm/Passion Sunday with the word "Futile". Futile? That's right! That's the word to describe the efforts of the powers-that-be to keep God's Christ sealed up in a tomb. On this multi-themed Sunday we'll begin with jubilation as we celebrate the "triumphal entry" of Jesus into Jerusalem, then move to the darker theme of Jesus' passion and death.  Holy Week presents numerous opportunities for faith formation and service... right up to and through Easter Sunday.  Be sure to check it out in this week's Express and make plans to join us along the way.

This issue of the Express provides an update for the next week's happenings around Roseburg's First United Methodist Church.  If this weekly newsletter comes as a surprise to you, it's probably because we've added you to the mailing list!  If you don't want to receive the Weekly Express every Thursday, simply scroll to the bottom of the page to use the SafeUnsubscribe option.  Uncheck the Weekly Express and you'll no longer receive it

The hope, of course, is that you'll stay with us and up to date on all the great things going on in and through this church!

See you in worship on Sunday -

Pastor Scott Harkness

CONNECT Youth Activities During Lent
The Alphas are conducting a Social Media Campaign: "Spreading Kindness like Confetti." Like us on FACEBOOK (Spreading Kindness like Confetti Project) and follow us on INSTAGRAM (@scatter.kindness.confetti) Be sure to use the hashtag: #kindnessconfettiYOUTH. Links to our pages will be on www.faithroseburg.org. Post a picture or tell a story about how you did a random act of kindness, or if you saw someone do an act of kindness in your community. Write your post and share it to our Instagram or Facebook page and tag your friends! Let's make this scatter out into the state and across the country! We are encouraging our youth to be the change and make a difference in the world. We are collaborating with Roseburg High School. Our Alphas are challenged to post every day during Lent:
making an Act of Kindness a purposeful and intentional act, as a way of participating in Lent. However, this project can go on as long as people are acting kind to one another.

Our church is hosting a group of walkers and bikers on a "Caminata" from Medford to Salem. The group is celebrating the denial of the permit for building theLNG pipeline through Southern Oregon and liquefied natural gas export terminal at Jordan Cove in Coos Bay. They also hope to express their commitment to the sacredness of creation and the need for the State of Oregon to get behind the movement to lower greenhouse gas emissions through carbon pricing.

All are invited to meet the group at the courthouse for a short vigil at 4pm on Tuesday and walk to our church for a potluck in the Fellowship Hall at 6pm followed by a presentation at 7pm. Outreach Opportunities this Week

FISH Food Offering
Remember to bring your food donations for the FISH Food Pantry to church each Sunday. Place your donations in the FISH Chuck Wagon near the entrance.  These are the suggested food item(s).
  • March 20:  Cereal- oatmeal, packaged low or no sugar content cereals, etc.
  • March 27:  Infant formula
Volunteer Opportunities at FISH Food Pantry
The FISH Food Pantry is in need of additional volunteers. The Pantry is in particular need of volunteers that can occasionally fill-in on somewhat short notice when a regular volunteer is out of town, ill, or otherwise not available. A few more volunteers are also needed on a one-day per week regular weekly basis. The volunteer shifts are three hours. Volunteers are asked to be at the Pantry 30 minutes before it opens to help set up for the day, and stay to help cleanup for 30 minutes after the Pantry closes.
The Pantry is open for clients the following times:
  • Monday and Wednesdays afternoons 1:30 to 3:30 pm
  • Thursday and Friday mornings 9:30 to 11:30 am
There are several volunteer jobs at the FISH Food Pantry, including client intake (use computer to enter data and client application), greeter (explains how Pantry works to new clients), stocking (moves food from storage area to food kiosks), and bagging/ client checkout. The only position where specialized orientation/ training is needed is client intake. However, most every task requires some people skills. Additionally, volunteers are needed with a pickup truck that could occasionally haul pallets of food from the UCAN warehouse to the Pantry on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for one to one and half hour.
