The Express
Roseburg First United Methodist Church
The week of February 14
Engage God... Engage One Another... Engage Life!

The season of Lent began with a beautiful and well-attended Ash Wed service at First Presbyterian Church. And now our spiritual journey to Easter has begun. My thanks to everyone who has returned their LentenQuest commitment forms. For those who haven't and are wondering about it, it's not too late to do so.  I've been asked why, if the commitments we are making during these special discipleship seasons are between us and God, does the church expect us to turn in commitment forms.  What's done with them?  It's a fair question. The answer is that we actually do record individual's commitments for a few reasons. It gives us an overall picture of the extent to which the congregation is engaging in these discipleship opportunities.  It also helps us plan to have enough books for classes and devotional materials for private use, and it allows us to connect volunteers with helping programs and agencies. It's true that many of the commitments we don't or can't track. Attending Lenten worship services, for example. Or connecting with a Spiritual Friend.  Or reading a daily devotional.  These truly are your personal commitments with God.  But experience tells us that it's simply human nature to follow through more consistently on commitments you make publicly. If we say "out loud" we're going to do something, it is more likely we will.  And this is one of the main reasons we provide these opportunities to make "out loud" commitments to grow and serve as disciples of Jesus Christ. I encourage you to take advantage of these seasonal gifts of engaging God, one another and life!

This issue of the Express provides an update for the next week's happenings around Roseburg's First United Methodist Church.  If this weekly newsletter comes as a surprise to you, it's probably because we've added you to the mailing list!  If you don't want to receive the Weekly Express every Thursday, simply scroll to the bottom of the page to use the SafeUnsubscribe option.  Uncheck the Weekly Express and you'll no longer receive it

CONNECT Youth Activities During Lent
The Alphas will be conducting a Social Media Campaign: "Spreading Kindness like Confetti." Like us on FACEBOOK (Spreading Kindness like Confetti Project) and follow us on INSTAGRAM (@scatter.kindness.confetti) Be sure to use the hashtag: #kindnessconfettiYOUTH. Links to our pages will be on www.faithroseburg.org. Post a picture or tell a story about how you did a random act of kindness, or if you saw someone do an act of kindness in your community. Write your post and share it to our Instagram or Facebook page and tag your friends! Let's make this scatter out into the state and across the country! We are encouraging our youth to be the change and make a difference in the world. We are collaborating with Roseburg High School. Our Alphas are challenged to post every day during Lent:
making an Act of Kindness a purposeful and intentional act, as a way of participating in Lent. However, this project can go on as long as people are acting kind to one another.
