New Professional Staff Teams Announced to Support Districts

On April 1st, our council is launching a new staff organization model designed to improve support to our eight districts and 590 units (packs, troops, teams, crews and posts).  Our eight districts are being grouped into two service areas, each with four professional staff members assigned to support the districts and units.

Supporting Service Area A (David Thompson, Lewis Clark Trails, Chief Kamiakin and Old Missions Districts) is Chris Petersen (Membership Executive), Josh Paparazzo, (Associate Development Executive), Marlene Schaefer (Unit Service Executive), and Dale Peters (Program Executive).  Chris & Dale will work out of the Hayden Scout Service Center.  Marlene will continue to work out of the Lewiston Scout Service Center and Josh will work out of the Spokane Scout Service Center.  Together, they will support the Scouting programs in Service Area A.

Supporting Service Area B (Stevens, Chinook, Thunderbird and Grizzly Districts) is Tim Williams (Associate Development Executive), DeAnne Heflin (Unit Service Executive), Crystal Loomis (Membership Executive) and John Rivera (Program Executive).  All four will work out of the Spokane Scout Service Center.  Together, they will support the Scouting programs in Service Area B.

Name Our New Service Areas

Submit Suggestions by April 30, 2014

Help us name our two new service areas, each composed of four districts!  We have temporarily designated two service areas "A" and "B".  Please email your name suggestion(s) to Nicole DeSart at [email protected] by April 30th.

Team A is composed of David Thompson, Lewis-Clark Trails, Chief Kamiakin, and Old Missions Districts and includes these communities: Grangeville, Lewiston, Clarkston, Newport, Bonners Ferry, Sandpoint, St. Maries, the Silver Valley, Plummer, Moscow, Pullman, Colfax, Post Falls and Coeur d'Alene.

Team B is composed of Stevens, Chinook, Thunderbird and Grizzly Districts and includes Chewelah, Colville, Deer Park, Liberty Lake, Newman Lake, Cheney, Medical Lake, Airway Heights, Davenport, Reardon, Spokane Valley, and Spokane.

We are NOT merging districts.  We are simply putting them into 2 groups.  We previously had our districts grouped into 3 service areas (Chief Spokane Service Area, Northern Star Service Area, and Southern Cross Service Area), which are no longer being used.

One Night for Scouting

Tiger cubs

Now is the time for strong, successful Units to be making plans for next Fall! Because our "One Night for Scouting" campaign was so successful, we will be holding it again- this time on Thursday, September 18, 2014! We need your help in reserving your location and staffing your event (and remember Boy Scouts are amazing helpers and inspire Cubbies!) A few fun games, a DVD of pack activities running in the background, and an inspirational leader is all it takes to make all the difference in the lives of these "potential Scouts"!

  • There will be news and media promotion!
  • New materials for the New Scout packets- ready and made up for you!
  • Help in organizing your event and materials available to help you and make it FUN!

This is our greatest opportunity to get the word out to potential new Scouts and their families- to offer them the chance to join the adventure of a lifetime, one that will help their son to a brighter future and create wonderful memories, life skills, and friendships along the way!!!

What a BLAST!

"FULL Speed Ahead" for action and fun! Let Blast Cars show 'em how Boy Scouts Rev -Up for summer and a fun year of activities and adventures! We've got everything you need to set up a fast-paced, exciting get together! This is a great way to grow your Troop by having Scouts invite friends to come for fun! This is the Pinewood Derby they loved...on steroids!

  • Simply contact the council office to reserve one of our Blast Car Sets. Sets are checked out for 2 weeks at a time, starting April 4th.
  • The first week, try it out- watch the sample cars BLAST off with ROCKET action using co2 cartridges. The boys will LOVE it! Then let them build their own to race the following week! The kits are available at discounted prices! And any new Scouts who join your Troop won't be charged for the cars when the new application is turned in!
  • The second week- let the races begin (and the fun!) Check it out for yourself by going to YouTube and watching BSA Blast Cars! Then, let us know when you'd like your kit!
Questions?  Contact Crystal Loomis at 509-325-4562 or [email protected]

Camp Opportunities
Congratulations 2014 Camp Staff Scholarship Recipients!

Congratulations to the recipients of the 2014 Camp Staff Scholarship.  Each year the Inland Northwest Council awards up to 3 Camp Staff a scholarships of $500 for their college.  This year we awarded three great staff members: Sean Weiler - Camp Easton, Geoffrey Marr - Camp Grizzly, and Emily Mick - Cub Country. For more information about Camp Staff Scholarships visit nwscouts.org or contact Bill Beaumont, Camping Director at [email protected].

Sean Weiler has been involved in the scouting program for 13 years. He started scouting when he attended Camp Cowles summer camp in 2001 with scout troop 413 out of Otis Orchards, Washington. He earned the rank of eagle in January 2009 after completing his eagle project, which included 4 years of gathering preemie baby clothes for the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) ward at Deaconess Hospital. Sean began working at Camp Easton in 2011 gaining the nickname "Chewbacca" and will be returning this summer season as the nature director. During the off season, Sean is going to school for a Bachelors in Biology/Range Science and plans on using his degree to work in the National Parks Service or the National Forest Service.

Geoffrey is from Troop 358 in Potlatch, Idaho and Crew 005 with Camp Grizzly. He has been involved with Boy Scouts for a long time. His dad, uncles, cousins, and grandparents were all involved with Boy Scouts. Were it not for their support, he would not have reached Eagle Scout rank or be working at Camp Grizzly. His most memorable experience in scouting was when, with a push from a friend in his troop, he decided to work at Fire Mountain as archery assistant when he was 16 years old.  He became the mountain bike director at Camp Grizzly after his dad told him about the opening. He keeps coming back every year to share his experience with others in hopes they will pass it on to the next.

Alexandrea Emily Mick is a 19-year-old student at Spokane Falls Community College. Mick comes from a family of scouting which includes her great uncle, father, and two brothers. She has worked at Camp Cowles's Cub Country for the past three years as a Den Guide and a Lead Den Guide. Before attending Spokane Falls Community College, she graduated from Lewis and Clark High School. She is planning on transferring to Eastern Washington University where she will be majoring in Dental Hygiene.
