Kids Are Better off in Scouting!
On May 23rd, 1,232 voting members of the Boy Scouts of America voted on a resolution that maintains its current membership policy for all adult leaders and states that youth may not be denied membership in the BSA on the basis of sexual orientation or preference alone. However, the new policy establishes a clear behavioral standard. The resolution passed with 757 votes, a 61 percent majority. This change in policy does not go into effect until January 1, 2014.
The new policy has generated a great many questions requiring a response. Please read this article that clearly articulates the new policy and the anticipated impact it will have on local units and members. More details will follow in the coming months.
Sexuality is not a part of the Scouting program: it never has been and it will not be in the future. This resolution does not change that. The change does not allow for homosexual activity in Scouting, does not endorse homosexuality, prohibits promotion of any agenda or lifestyle, upholds a Scout's Duty to God, and makes a stronger statement than the BSA has ever made that we consider sexual activity (heterosexual or homosexual) by youth of Scouting age to be inappropriate and contrary to Scouting virtues. There is no change to the adult leadership requirements: open or vowed homosexuals may not be selected at leaders in Scouting.
Kids are better off when they are in Scouting. We can only positively influence the lives of a young man when he is in the program. I want more youth in the Inland Northwest to have great role models like you. This resolution allows us to serve youth while they learn and grow and, sometimes, go through very difficult and confusing times in their lives, while preserving the virtues of Scouting that our organization was founded on. We are so grateful for you and your support of Scouting. Please stay with us!
Yours in Scouting,
Tim McCandless
Scout Executive/CEO

Why? My name is Sean McGinnis. I am the Senior Patrol Leader of NYLT. I went through NYLT in the summer of 2009, I was 13 years old.
