Scouting Spotlight

For the Scouts

Thank you for the work that you do to make Scouting come alive "For the Scouts".

Our council executive board, committees and staff are dedicated to using the resources available to us reach youth and then to inspire them to serve and live according to the Scout Oath, Law and Outdoor Code and to be Prepared. For Life.  It's "For the Scouts!"

Camp Grizzly, Camp Easton, Cub Country at Cowles Scout Reservation, and Cub Scout Day Camps are designed to provide great outdoor adventures and environmental education for Scouts.  Our merit badge program including the merit badge colleges, clinics and STEM Merit Badge University are designed to introduce Scouts to careers and teach them life skills.  The new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) program is designed to get youth interested and prepared for the largest career growth areas-where there is a major shortage of qualified applicants.

Our leadership training programs including online training, Wood Badge, BALOO, Outdoor Leadership Skills, Safety Afloat, Climb on Safely, Hazardous Weather Training, monthly leader roundtables and many more help Scouting leaders to deliver a safe, challenging, and effective program for the Scouts.

The annual Popcorn Sale and new Camp Card Sale help Scouts learn to earn their own way and take ownership of the Scouting program.  The advancement program including many badges, awards and ranks help Scouts learn to set and achieve goals and to learn new skills.  Community service projects (like Scouting for Food) and citizenship programs help Scouts learn to help other people and to understand their responsibilities as a citizen.

The Boy Scouts of America is the finest youth development program today.  We provide the best leadership, citizenship, fitness and values building experience for youth.  Period.  And we do it while providing adventure and teaching youth an ethic of community service.  The success of our program has been a cornerstone in the lives of millions of Americans.

More than 10,000 youth are involved in Scouting in the Inland Northwest Council today.  There's at least another 10,000 youth in our territory that would benefit tremendously from our program.  The Inland Northwest Council is driven to reach out to them and their families and to encourage them to be part of Scouting.  Whether you are a unit leader, a committee member, a donor, parent or district or council volunteer, THANK YOU for making Scouting real, "For the Scouts!"

To help your unit have all of the resources it needs, be sure that your unit sends representatives to your district's 2013-2014 Program Kickoff in May and that you unit sends representatives to the all new Popcorn University on June 1st so that your unit has everything it needs including the financial resources to deliver a dynamite Scouting program next year.

Yours in Scouting,

Tim McCandless

NEW! Den Leader Position-Specific Training

A new Den Leader Position-Specific Training course just released to help with the education of new Den Leaders.

The two hour course is for Tiger Cub, Wolf, and Bear Den Leaders. It is intended to provide leaders with the experience, basic information, and resources they need to conduct successful den meetings.

Tiger Cub, Wolf, and Bear Den Leaders who complete this training, and also have current Youth Protection Training are considered "trained" for all three positions.

NYLT-National Youth Leadership Skills Weekend

What? A week long training experience open to any Scout in a leadership position. (This is a similar experience to Wood Badge but for your youth leadership).

Where? Camp Cowles Reservation

When? June 17-22 2013

How much? $250 for the week

Why? My name is Sean McGinnis. I am the Senior Patrol Leader of NYLT. I went through NYLT in the summer of 2009, I was 13 years old. To this day I regard it as the best Scouting function I have ever been a part of. The leadership skills that your Scouts will learn and be able to bring back to your home unit are incredible.

Michael Beck Will Show You How to Sell $10,000 in Popcorn In One Weekend!

Mr. Beck will give you the information necessary to not only earn that amount but much more! What if you could earn $10,000 in one weekend?

Mr. Beck has shown and coached hundreds of units to earn what they need and how to pass on information to your Scouts in such a way that it gives them skills that you've only before witnessed in professional adults, to set their own goals and achieve a level of success that even they didn't believe they could attain.

Attend the Fundraising for the Future special presentation on Saturday June 1 at University High School in the Spokane Valley.

This will be followed by Popcorn University where popcorn unit kernels can see, taste and smell the new product, learn how to manage inventory, have a terrific kickoff and see the new website ordering system.

Are your Cub Scouts looking for fun and adventure this summer?

Cub Country at Cowles Scout Reservation is hosting a Super Hero Academy to instruct young heroes in the Hall of Core Values.  Every Cub Scout has great powers within themselves and great potential.

We will have a total of six sessions from July 5th-August 11th.  Two of the sessions will be a Webelos-only camp where they will experience a glimpse of being a Boy Scout and learn how to work in patrols and take on more fun and challenging activities.

Cub Scout Day Camps 2013: Choose Your Adventure!

There will be six day camps throughout the Spokane - Coeur d'Alene area. Each of these day camps will offer a wide variety of activities centered on a unique theme. Each day camp offers a new adventure for your Cub Scouts. These day camps are three days long and are open to all Cub Scouts entering grades 1 to 5 in the fall of 2013. The themes for these Day Camps and "Twilight Camps" are Yippee-Cub-Yay Roundup and the Jungle Cubs' Safari.

In addition, Day Camp programs will be offered in six rural communities throughout the council. These day camps vary from 2 to 3 days in length and also offer a wide variety of activities for Cub Scouts. "Blast Off to Adventure! Cubs in Space" is the theme for these Day Camps.
