Congratulations Supernova Award Recipient, Richard Brown!
Congratulations to Richard Brown of Troop 431 on being the first youth earn the Nova Award in the Inland Northwest Council!
Richard heard about the Nova awards at our 2012 STEM University event, immediately began working on the engineering-themed Whoosh! Nova Award, and completed all the requirements on November 18th, 2012.
This fun and exciting new award has already had quite the effect; Richard has stated that he wants to be an engineer when he grows up.
Richard was presented his patch and a special council certificate of achievement at Grizzly District's most recent volunteer recognition dinner. |

Spring Program Planning
"Be Prepared" has long been the Scout motto, however, this is not just two words for Boy Scouts, it is how all of us must operate to have the best Scouting program for our youth as we work together to prepare them for life.
As a unit leader, you won't want to miss the Spring Program Planning Conference held at your May Roundtable.
Once again, this year you will be able to gather all the needed materials to prepare your Scouting unit for the 2013-2014 Scouting year. Upon arrival at your Spring Program Planning Conference you will get your passport to Excellence and all the information needed to help prepare your unit for a quality program.
This will be a night for your whole committee and unit leaders to attend and learn about upcoming programs and new materials to help them be a better committee chair, den leader or any other key position.

STEM Updates
While the Nova and Supernova awards are not directly part of your Journey to Excellence point system, they should not be overlooked and their significance not understated. The Nova awards are designed to enhance interest in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics through exciting activities that truly can prepare our youth for success in an quickly changing complex that is becoming more and more dependent upon individuals with STEM skills and education.
Workbooks are available at the Scout Shop and worksheets-which are not required but can help make awards more approachable-are available at the Council Office. Any parent or volunteer may serve as a Nova counselor but Supernova awards require that work be done through a registered mentor. If you are interested in becoming a Supernova mentor, know someone who would make a great mentor, or just want more information please contact the Council Office. |

NEW! Den Leader Position-Specific Training
A new Den Leader Position-Specific Training course just released to help with the education of new Den Leaders. The two-hour course was developed based on the results of extensive surveys of Den Leaders in 2006 and 2011, Voice of the Scout feedback, and a Den Leader "competency" study in 2012.
The new course is for Tiger Cub, Wolf, and Bear Den Leaders. It is intended to provide them with the experience, basic information, and resources they need to conduct successful den meetings. It is also designed to address some of the primary skills that den leaders need.
Tiger Cub, Wolf, and Bear Den Leaders who complete this training, and also have current Youth Protection Training are considered "trained" for all three positions.
The existing Cub Scout Leader Position-Specific Training course, which includes sections for Cubmasters, Webelos den leaders, committee members, and den leaders, is still a valid course and should continue to be used to train all of the other pack positions.

NYLT-National Youth Leadership Skills Weekend
What?- A week long training experience open to any scout in leadership. (This is a similar experience to wood badge except for your youth leadership in the Troop or Crew).
Where?-Camp Cowles Reservation
When? - June 17-22 2013
How much? - $250 for the week
Why?- My name is Sean McGinnis. I am the Senior Patrol Leader of NYLT. I went through NYLT in the summer of 2009, I was 13 years old. To this day I regard it as the best Scouting Function I have ever been a part of. The leadership skills that your Scouts will learn and be able to bring back to your home unit are incredible. I encourage every scout to attend NYLT to learn the next level of leadership that is available to them. It is an awesome experience for all ages. I have served on staff for the past three years. I can promise you will never regret sending your scouts to NYLT.
