Building a Strong Scouting Program

4 Key Initiatives Underway:  STEM Merit Badge University , Journey to Excellence Conference, BeAScout, Camps

By Tim McCandless, Scout Executive

Several initiatives are underway to help strengthen the Scouting program as a result of our council's Strategic Plan:

  1. The new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) Merit Badge University kicked off at Gonzaga University on October 27th to introduce Boy Scouts to careers in STEM fields and to help Scouts earn merit badges that are difficult to typically find counselors for.  What a great start to our new STEM initiative designed to keep Scouting relevant and to help prepare youth for success in life!  340 Boy Scouts started their badges on the 27th and will be working towards completion over the next several weeks with a follow up session on Nov. 17th.  We think that this is the start of something special that will grow in future years.  Thanks to the committee for organizing this new event!  Learn about the BSA's new STEM initiative at www.scouting.org/STEM
  2. To help support volunteer leaders, we are holding the Journey to Excellence Conference on Saturday December 1st with two national level speakers:  Our keynote speaker is Michael Gurian, researcher, speaker and best-selling author of numerous books including The Wonder of Boys and The Purpose of Boys.  Plus, Andrea Watson, director of the BSA's national volunteer training center at Philmont in New Mexico will join us for presentations on the Philmont Training Center and on High Adventure programs. The day will be filled with great classes to help Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity and Venture leaders deliver a quality Scouting program.  You will get great ideas and advice.  Learn more at http://www.nwscouts.org/event/1205421
  3. To help reach youth and families that need Scouting, we are expanding our use and promotion of the www.BeAScout.org website.  Special stand-up Cub Scouts are on display at Rosauer's Supermarkets, Super 1 Stores and several other locations to promote Cub Scouting.  Be sure that your pack, troop, team or crew has updated your unit information "pin" on the website.  Unit leaders and committee chairs can go to www.MyScouting.org to update your unit information so that interested youth and families can find you.
  4. Scouting is "outing" and it is our goal to offer the best camps possible to support great outdoor programs.  We are working on raising funds for a new shower house & restroom at Camp Grizzly, the new dining hall for Cub Country at Cowles Scout Reservation, and an updated master plan for Camp Easton to include a permanent, safe crossing over or under Highway 97.  Watch for details to come!  In the meantime, you can make a gift to support these projects at the camps by  clicking here.

Thank you for your leadership to prepare youth for success in life!

  1. Thanks  to Rosauers and Super 1 Foods for displaying our Cub Scout promotional stand-up displays!
  2. Byron Jackson kicks off the new STEM Merit Badge University on Oct. 27.  Thanks to Itron for being our Lead Sponsor.
  3. Leroy Nosbaum, President & CEO of Itron, with Tim McCandless, Scout Executive.  Mr. Nosbaum was our keynote speaker at the MBU and the Honorary President.

Brand new Council Shoulder Patch unveiled!

This spring, the council announced a contest to design a brand new Council Shoulder Patch, the first new patch in decades. A design submitted by Eagle Scout Dominick Rahn of Troop 218 was select from amongst the design entries and has been selected to be our new Council Shoulder Patch (CSP).

There are 3 versions of the patch, each with a unique border. A red border for Scouts and Unit Leaders, a silver border for district volunteers, and a gold border for volunteers at the council level. A total of 250 numbered collectors patches were produced and are available for $10 per patch.

Will you be among the first in your unit to sport our new CSP? Patches are $3 and are currently stocked in Spokane at the Volunteer Service Desk and in our council stores in Coeur d'Alene and Lewiston. You can even purchase patches online at www.NWScouts.org/patches.

Unit Leaders can save 10% when purchasing 10 or more patches for their unit.

It's the Area's Largest Service Project: Scouting for Food.

Are You A Part of It?

Saturday, November 10th

scouting for food_sign

It's time to go Scouting for Food! This is the Inland Northwest Council's annual "Good Turn" event! Thank you to Rosauers for making the event possible through their generous sponsorship.

Help us continue the tradition of performing a Good Turn by collecting 200,000 pounds of food this fall! Units have two options in how to participate in Scouting for Food: the two day plan or the one day "walk & knock". Scouts and volunteers will walk their assigned neighborhoods and pass out of 300,000 specially prepared bags and have the homeowner fill their bag. We hope to cover as many homes as possible throughout Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho. Please contact your local Scouting for Food district coordinator for more details and to pick your collection area. To sign up online to participate in this year's Scouting for Food drive in your local area, click here.

All food contributions collected should be returned to one of the drop off locations listed on the council website at www.NWScouts.org. Bags for Scouting for Food will be distributed at your local October roundtable meeting.

Silver Beaver Nominations are due by December 14th

Silver Beaver

The Silver Beaver Award, presented annually is the highest award that a council can present to a volunteer. This award is for outstanding service to youth at the council level or for outstanding longtime service to youth by a registered Scouter residing within the Inland Northwest Council.

To nominate an outstanding Scouter for this prestigious award complete the "Silver Beaver Nomination" form and submit it to the Inland Northwest Council. The key point to remember when filling out the nomination form is to provide as much information as possible about the nominee. Nomination forms are due to the council office by December 14, 2012. The 2012 Silver Beaver Awards will be presented at the Council Volunteer Recognition Dinner on March 9, 2013.

To download the "Silver Beaver Nomination" form click here.

Adult Leader Training
Every Scout Deserves a Trained Leader

Are you trained for your current Scout position? Take advantage of our numerous scheduled training courses and visit our online learning center at www.myscouting.org. Scout leaders who receive training are more successful and Scouts who participate in programs run by trained Scout leaders stay in the program longer. Nothing has a bigger impact on our Scouts as much as a trained leader can!

What training is required for your current Scouting position?

Recharter and Training Policy Update: We Listened & Are Making Charter Renewal Easier!
David Thompson Outdoor Leadership Skills
A special task force was convened over the summer to review the council's recharter process and training policy in order to make the recharter process easier and to help all volunteer leaders receive the training that will help them do their jobs well.

The task force recommended and the council approved continuing our training policy, but separating it from recharter.  Leaders still need to complete their training within 6 months of taking a position (Youth Protection Training must be completed immediately before registering).  This requirement, however, will not be tied to the recharter process.  Instead, leaders will be recognized with a special patch when they complete their required training and units will be recognized when 100% of their leaders are trained.

Twelve Steps to Get Your Unit Charter Done With Ease

Follow these key steps to renewing your charter quickly and easily. It all starts with making sure all youth and adult applications are turned into the office. This will cut down your data entry time and provide fewer opportunities for errors. While the council training policy has not changed, it is no longer tied to the charter renewal process. This means your charter will not be put on hold or deemed unfinished due to training requirements not being met. Charters will still need required Institutional Head and Unit Leader signatures, payment and any attached applications of new youth and adults.
