Recent state legislative sessions have seen an increase in bills that would encourage or require cities to engage in water conservation measures:

A bill passed in 2007, H.B. 4, requires each water utility with 3,300 or more connections to submit to the state a water conservation plan and a report on progress in carrying out the plan.  Legislation passed in 2011, S.B. 181 and S.B. 660, requires state agencies to develop a uniform methodology for cities to use in...

New Registration and Housing System for TML Annual Conference
The TML 2014 Annual Conference will take place September 30 - October 3 at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston. The preliminary conference program with pricing will be available online on Tuesday, July 1.

The conference registration and housing website will open two weeks later on Tuesday, July 15, at 10:00 a.m. CDT.

This year, TML is using a new system that links conference registration and housing reservations in one easy, streamlined process. It's a balanced approach that allows one registration at a time, and requires that individuals register for the conference before gaining access to hotel room reservations. This new system is designed to meet our members' needs for preferred rates, type of hotel, and needed arrival and departure date. We also expect it will help eliminate the early rush on sleeping rooms, and attrition that can result when room blocks are held then cancelled.

Newly Elected City Officials' Orientation
Serving as a city official can be the most rewarding and satisfying of all areas of public service. It can also be the most challenging. Recognizing these challenges, the Texas Municipal League and Association of Mayors, Councilmembers and Commissioners designed a training opportunity specifically for newly elected city officials. The Newly Elected City Officials' Orientation will give you a solid foundation for beginning or continuing your public service role.

Join us July 24-25 in Bastrop, or August 15-16 in Irving, for this valuable learning experience and chance to network with your colleagues from across the state.

Yes! You Are Still Required to Take the Public Funds Investment Act Training
The Public Funds Investment Act (PFIA) training requirement makes no exception for cities that have only limited funds to invest. The requirement is there to protect you and your city from everything from headline risk to loss of principal.

PFIA requires treasurers, chief financial officers, and investment officers of local governments to participate in 10 hours of training on PFIA topics within the first 12 months of taking office, and every two fiscal years thereafter.

Here are the upcoming TML PFIA trainings that meet the state requirement:

  • Austin; June 26 - 27
  • Dallas; July 31 - August 1
  • San Antonio; December 11 - 12

TML Municipal Excellence Award Application Deadline is
June 6

The TML Municipal Excellence Awards have honored best practices in municipal governance for almost 20 years. Join the list of cities that have won awards, or add another trophy to your display box, by submitting an application by the June 6 deadline. The 2014 competition is divided into two population categories-cities less than 25,000 in population and cities over 25,000 in population. Within each of the two population categories, there are five subject categories-management innovations, communication programs, city spirit, public safety, and public works.

For more information and to apply by the June 6 deadline, visit the TML Municipal Excellence Awards page on the TML website.
