Alto Moncayo

Alto Moncayo Wine: 100 points from Robert Parker

"I gave perfect scores to the prodigious 2007 and 2009, two of the greatest expressions of old vine Grenache from the province of Aragon that anyone could have desire.

The both possess plenty of black raspberry, blackberry, kirsch and licorice characteristics as well as an undeniable minerality and precision that are remarkable given their full-bodied, massive concentration and intensity."

ROBERT PARKER. November 8, 2013.

E From Locations Wine - Simple, Complex, Fun.

Locations is a simple concept made complicated that ultimately became a great deal of fun.

* The Simple: Make the best possible wine from a given country or location.

* The Complex: Going out and tracking down the vineyards which are capable of delivering the quality of wine needed.

* The Fun: Travelling the world to visit incredible sites and meet amazing people that challenge each other to make the best wine possible.

Priorat, Jumilla, Toro, Rioja, and Ribera del Duero are among the most noble growing regions on the Iberian Peninsula and purposely chosen for the second release of our Spanish red wine. Super concentrated fruit from old vines with low yields are accented with a judicious oak program for a balanced and distinctive wine.

There will be a third selection - but it will have to remain a surprise until Friday night.

Please join us.

Peach and Blue Cheese Toasts

The best blue cheese for this is salty but creamy,
not too sharp or funky.

This week we will be featuring outrageous blue cheese from Spain, Italy, and California. Combining them with the first peaches of summer to give you new ideas to show off your warm weather entertaining.

OF NOTE & NEW:

Rogue's Dead Guy Whiskey
- Dead Guy Whiskey has a fresh orange citrus aroma with a delicately sweet, rich malt complex. Medium-bodied, flavors of oak and honey give way to a clean vanilla finish.

Dead Guy Whiskey is distilled from the same three malts as Rogue's Platinum medal-winning Dead Guy Ale. Dead Guy Whiskey, ocean-aged by both the Pacific Ocean and nearby Yaquina Bay.

Perry's Tot - Navy Strength Gin - 114 Proof

This original Navy Strength Gin - at 57% ABV - is the historical proof at which gunpowder might still be fired should it unfortunately be soaked by spilled spirit.  'Tot', a British measurement for alcohol, gives nod to Navy Strengths roots. Aromatic and smooth, Perry's is ideal for the gin aficionado.

CHOCOLATE WHISKEY?

I didn't know I needed a chocolate whiskey until I sampled some during a tour of the little warehouse space Kings County calls home in Brooklyn.

This popular (and controversial) whiskey is made with  Mast Brothers chocolate husks, which are a by-product of the chocolate process and usually ground up for garden mulch or compost. Since this is the woody part of the chocolate, it has a little bit in common with the oak of the barrels in traditional whiskey aging.  Unlike a liqueur, the chocolate whiskey contains no sugar, so it's flavor is more like rich dark chocolate.

Bitter and surprising, this rich whiskey tastes like dark chocolate and works great in cocktails or on its own as an after-dinner drink.

 First come, first served.

Cool Item of the Day:
The Bitter Truth Cocktail Bitters Traveler's Set

The Bitter Truth is celebrating their 5th Anniversary this year and they have recently released a few notable products that no bar should be without.  First up is a top notch variety pack of bitters.  These come in 20ml size bottles with built in dasher tops.  Perfect for taking with you to a party, cocktail event or your local bar to add that finishing touch to your cocktail.  Here are some tasting notes on what comes in the set.

CELERY BITTERS: Very complex and exotic. The initial flavor of celery is dominant, leading into a complex palate with aromas of lemongrass, orange peel and ginger.
OLD TIME AROMATIC BITTERS: Classically bitter and tangy. Combining the aromatics of cinnamon, cardamom, anise and cloves, it reminds one of gingerbread.
ORANGE BITTERS: The aroma of bitter orange peel is in the foreground, complimented by the spicy flavors of cardamom, caraway and nutmeg.
CREOLE BITTERS: The complex combination of flavors hints upon spice, bitterness and cardamon with a subtle floral finish that e vokes the flavors of Creole cuisine in New Orleans/Louisiana.
JERRY THOMAS BITTERS: Very fruity and very bitter. Citrus and dried fruit aromas unite with the spicy and bitter flavors of cloves, angostura bark and cinnamon.
