We are a Champagne Nation. Sales of Champagne have increased over 30% and the trend looks like it will keep climbing. This is because consumers are discovering the remarkable variety and quality that is now available.
Previously choices were limited to the two or three big names that dominate the market. But now, thanks to better distribution and awareness customers can enjoy Champagne that was only available to insiders or people living close to the source.
Most of the familiar big names of Champagne are manufactured in huge quantities. They are readily available in most every store - including ours.
We also happen to offer a magnificent collection of "Grower Champagne." Champagne that is produced by individuals and their families in limited quantities. They pick the grapes themselves, make the wine and bottle it themselves. They make in an entire year what the big names produce in literally - a matter of hours.
Crafted with old world traditions, these are artisanal wines that reflect the land were they came from and the people that made them - and present wonderfully unique, almost magical flavors in the glass.
More often than not - these wines cost the same or less than big brands. Offer Grower Champagnes to your family & friends this year, and taste the difference. This Friday night we would like to introduce you to the small producers.
This Friday night will will sample several of the wines from the great
Terry Theise portfolio - Including the ones listed below.

Terry Theise:
"Most of the Big Brand Champagne is ordinary mediocre wine. It's industrial, and tastes like it. It is, arguably, "reliable" and there's something to be said for that. I admire how decent some of the wines are, considering how and in what volume they are made.
But insisting on drinking them because you should "drink what you like" is a waste of time and money. It goes without saying that honorable exceptions exist. All of us know who they are. And it should go without saying that I'm talking about the basic NVs here; the Tête-de-Cuvées are almost always excellent and sometimes superb, and cost about 70-100% more than they're worth."

Gaston Chiquet
"I drank a glass of the NV while out to dinner recently. And as I did I felt the same admiration and affection I always feel for that wine, because it so perfectly threads the needle between its silken precision and its forward fruit. It's not jumping through hoops of fire of terroir, it's just saturated with caring and craftsmanship." TT Total Production: 18,000 cases ( Moët & Chandon: 2,000,000 + cases )
These wines are sensually gorgeous, hedonistic wines that everyone can cozy up to. They taste focused, refined and friendly. They taste like the wines of a man who respects his land. They split the difference between the really adamantly mineral Champagnes and the overtly fruity ones. They are classical, not romantic. They are thoughtful but not aloof, like their maker!
|
Total Production 20,000 cases ( Veuve Clicquot: over 1,500,000 cases )
Wine with great class and savor.
The wines are suave, creamy and refined, with a "soft" minerality dispersed through the fruit. Silky, stylish wines rather than vigorous,
racy wines. These are very deliciously accommodating to the palate. Old vines impart a palpable creaminess. The majority of Gimonnet's vineyards are more than 40 years old, the oldest parcel (in Cramant) is
100. "For me, we must have concentration, but also balance, elegance and harmony," says Didier Gimonnet.
|
Total Production 14,000 cases ( Mumm: 825,000 cases )
"These are blow-your-mind Champagnes; Crystaline, jewellike firmness and immense mealy depth give these a Krug-like profile nearly unique among Blanc de Blancs. These wines have a concentration of the minerally essence of the type, and are straining at the leash as though the fruit wanted to burst free and run at full gallop. They have trilling high notes of aroma."
|
Total Production 11,000 cases ( Laurent-Perrier: 700,000 cases )
"Great find offering unique Champagnes. Among the best rosé in the entire region. Be ready to have your mind expanded!
Given the breadth of the range, it's hard to make shift with a few telling descriptors. They are flowery and high-flying Champagnes, rather like a cross of Chartogne and Chiquet, but not exactly similar to either. Class, depth and detail are abundant. They are graceful, even when they're intense."
