THIS FRIDAY NIGHT
This Friday night we revisit the wines of a renegade. Last season one of the most popular tastings we presented was the wines of Jason Woodbridge.
We start with - If You See Kay A Cabernet Sauvignon blend made by Jason Woodbridge of Hundred Acre and Layer Cake wines with grapes sourced from top vineyards in Lazio, Italy.
The bold, seductive, adventurous packaging and wine style is aimed squarely at today's young, irreverent wine drinkers - like looking in a mirror, right?
Jayson Woodbridge's winemaking philosophy is "Wide open throttle or don't bother doing it at all," i.e. risk everything; all in at all times. With that in mind, no matter where you see kay, you can be sure you will be drinking a bottle of red wine made with One Hundred Percent pure unrestrained Attitude.
The bottom line is, Jayson doesn't care what anybody thinks. He searches out the best vineyards and makes uncompromised wine; wine that is powerful and complex, yet elegant.
Robert Parker said of Jayson, "Woodbridge is irrefutably a contrarian, but he is the kind of person you want going against mainstream, conventional thoughts. His wines are among the most individualistic in California."

Robert Parker The Wine Enthusiast: "Woodbridge's desire is to produce a wine for under $20 that tastes like a $50+ wine, and as hard as it might be to believe, he seems to have come very close to succeeding with Layer Cake."
LAYER CAKE SHIRAZ - $18 - South Australia Rated 90 Points
Robert Parker -
"As one expects from any South Australian Shiraz, it has oodles of fruit, a big, thick, juicy mouthfeel, velvety tannins, and lots of crème de cassis, blackberry, peppery, and tar- like notes in a deep, full-bodied, lush style that should drink nicely for 3-4 years as well. Keep in mind that what Jayson Woodbridge is doing is taking his winemaking team from Hundred Acre Vineyard, flying them around the world, and actually making these wines on site from top quality fruit. It is an innovative project, to say the least, but the proof is in the bottle, as they say, and at $18, readers are going to be exceptionally pleased with the quality of these wines."
Layer Cake Chardonnay - $14
Robert Parker - Aromas of Meyer lemons, wet stones and Kaffir lime blossoms followed by layers of lime, guava, and pineapple in the mouth, with a light creamy texture of whipped lemon curd. The finish is clean and crisp, lingering enough to make you want another sip.
"Super Value - Stunning Price."
JW: "Our approach to Chardonnay is one of non-intervention, allowing the fruit and the place to speak for itself, and then layering in our techniques to bring it to its fullest potential. We let the grapes develop fully, which in our vineyards means concentrated and complex layers of fruit, heady evocative aromatics and perfect balance of flavor.
We ferment in stainless steel at low temperatures to preserve the intense, complex aromatics, and then age certain lots in 3-year air-dried French oak to accentuate and balance the concentrated fruit, adding another layer of complexity with the subtle, high-quality oak. The result is a rich wine, but with clean, pure layers of flavors and aromatics."
