About a week ago we were sipping a little Provence style rosé over lunch with friends - lets call them Barbara & Barry. We sat outside - overlooking the Milford shoreline and beautifully tended gardens - a perfect summer day. It was a "picnic" on a grand scale.
One of the tricky things about Provencal wines for a picnic is this: they are not typically cheap, and a picnic wine should, by definition, be cheap. Provencal roses from more prestigious appellations such as Bandol, in fact, are often rather pricy- not exactly stuff you want to sip from cups at the beach or at your favorite park.
Don't get me wrong - we've done it plenty of times and as we all know - good wine from a paper cup is better than no wine at all.
If you can find nice Bandol rose in your price range (which would mean that $25-plus is your price range), that's your go-to picnic wine, regardless of what you're eating.
Otherwise, check out these lesser-known wines, especially those made from bright, spicy red based grapes such as Grenache, Mourvedre, or Cinsault. The Cotes de Provence appellation is perhaps the broadest and all-encompassing in terms of wine styles/prices, although well-priced stuff is hardly limited to that area.
This Friday night lets try some perfect Summer Wines.

This Friday Night - 5-8 PM
Wine & Cheese Tasting - No Charge. |

Domaine De Triennes Rose - $15 This is a typical Provencal "kitchen sink" rose of Cinsault (65%), Grenache, Syrah, and Merlot, made at a newish estate near Marseille co-owned by Burgundy heavyweights Jacques Seysses (Dujac) and Aubert du Villaine (Romanee-Conti).
This is a stunning, 113 acre property in Provence, which is recognized as one of the top wine estates in Southern France. Unlike most of the vineyards in the area which are planted on valley floors, Triennes sits on a south-facing slope at about1,400-1,450 feet above sea level. The soils are rich in limestone and low in organic matter. The relatively cool microclimate helps maintain freshness, vibrancy and balance in the wines.
The estate is named after the triennia - festivities in the honor of Bacchus that took place every three years in Roman times. Small proportions of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre were blended with Cinsault to provide color and tannin to this light pink Rose. The wine is fresh, with appealing notes of red fruits followed by a round and harmonious finish, Clean, crisp, tangy, versatile.

Vallis Queyras - $12
Vallis Queyras means valley of stones, it has its roots in the rich soil. Vaucluse located south of the Rhone Valley, giving the wine typicity and strong charisma.
With a domaince of Gernache, this wine is characterized by its spices, its roundness and robe with flamboyant colors and reflecions. Vallis Queyras pairs nicely with typical picnic and BBQ foods.
Great with things just off the grill - or potato salad made from that secret family recipe that comes around once or twice a year.

Don Tomasi Cabernet Sauvignon-Nero d'Avola - $16
A monument of pulp and balsamic spices, the Cabernet Sauvignon-Nero d'Avola Don Tomasi smells of fresh scents like oregano, rosemary and a gentle vanilla. It is enveloping, full-bodied and harmonic. Fine tannins are perfectly balanced.
This is a full bodied wine that has a little grip to it. Steaks, ribs, BBQ chicken - this is the wine that you want in your glass.
Please try it on Friday night.
