TRG SHADOW

Corton-Charlemagne is named after the Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne,

who once owned the hill of Corton that the vineyards now rest. According to legend, the vineyards are dedicated to white grape varieties because the emperor's wife preferred white wines as they did not stain his beard.  The AOC was created in 1937.

The vines are located on the higher ground of a hilltop that stretches between the Burgundian villages of Ladoix-Serrigny and Pernand-Vergelesses. The slopes planted with the most valuable vineyards are south-east facing on the hilltop with the land gradually sloping downwards towards the major French highway Route 74. The red wine appellation of Corton covers the lower part of the hill with the areas for Corton and Corton-Charlemagne partially overlapping. louis-latour cap1

Furthermore there is a third Grand Cru appellation on the Corton hill, Charlemagne, that may be used for white wine produced from the En Charlemagne lieu-dit. However, as En Charlemagne is only 0.28 hectares in size, production is limited and usually blended with grapes from the other lieu-dits of Corton-Charlemagne.

For this Easter weekend tasting we thought we should chill down a bottle and share it with our friends.

With a golden yellow color, the Corton-Charlemagne has a complex but intense nose. With notes of vanilla, mocha and nut, this wine is ample with a round structure.
One discovers hints of almond and a lovely mineral finish.

Maison Louis Latour's Corton-Charlemagne is the benchmark wine for that grand cru vineyard.  Always tightly wound when young, its remarkable character opens and expands with years-even decades-of age.

The vineyard's expansive size means that Corton-Charlemagne's wines are easier to find and are the least expensive of the white grand cru wines.

Excellent producers, such as Latour  often retail for under $125 per bottle, often half the price of the other grand crus.

We have a number of other special wines that were uncovered by our Wine Detectives on their recent trip to France. They are seriously worth considering for your holiday tables.

Finding special wine takes a special skill. The South of France
is a treasure trove of rare finds but it takes a real Wine Detective to find them.

Often behind unmarked doors, down a narrow street, the real gems do not reveal themselves to the "civilian."

The Call

A call from a street corner to a number scribbled on a piece of paper can lead to an invitation to visit a private cellar.

Once inside the chilly stone room the proprietor of even the very smallest domaine is genuinely excited to share what they have created.
The photo above illustrates just such an example.
The barrels you see hold the entire allotment of the estate.
The total production of this domaine is just 150 cases - period.

We have just one case of the remarkable Chatauneuf du Pape
that we found at Domaine des Saumande. This is the real thing.
First come, first served. $50 per bottle.

You will not find this anywhere else. Period.

Henri-Darnat3Vineyard owner, Henri Darnat, says that making great wines requires patience and "the courage to wait"; waiting for optimum ripeness to time the harvest as the September weather can be changeable, waiting on the wines as they ferment with their own natural rhythm barrel by barrel, waiting and tasting the wines so they are bottled at their optimum point of purity and liveliness. The pride of his work is that his wines are represented on the best restaurant lists of France and the world.

The vineyards and trading activity have existed in the Darnat family since the nineteenth century. In keeping with their ancestors' philosophy, the Darnat vineyards, now headed by Henri Darnat, are worked by hand, without chemical fertilizers or herbicides.

Darnat's Meursault plots blend very stony upper slope exposures and significant clay-limestone dominated soils.

100% Chardonnay, Brilliant white-gold color, Expressive buttery nose with hints of honey. This wine has a mouth of beautiful bold aromas of very ripe fruit. Superb acidity buttresses the finish, leading to a slight flavor of hazelnut.

White Burgundy from a world class producer. We love this wine.
