What's Happening Now...
Road, Sidewalk and Pathway Construction

The City of Novi prides itself on maintaining open lines of communication and keeping community members apprised of the latest in road and non-motorized construction projects.

The following information is intended to provide an overview of current projects, including those led by the Michigan Department of Transportation and the Road Commission for Oakland County.
Michigan Department of Transportation Updates

Update: Southbound I-275 and associated interchange ramps are now open. Northbound I-275 and associated interchange ramps are now closed and detoured for construction.

Every night (8pm-5am) from July 12-26, there will be intermittent lane closures on eastbound and westbound M-5 for bridge work under northbound I-275, as well as intermittent lane closures on eastbound and westbound I-696 for bridge work under northbound I-275

Part of the I-275 project is the rehabilitation of I-696 from I-275 to just east of Lahser Road. The contractor will be closing I-696 in four distinct stages on four separate weekends. Two eastbound I-696 weekend closures remain to be completed. Information regarding these closures is forthcoming.

Finally, when the contractor has completed the northbound bridge work on northbound I-275, they can then reopen northbound I-275 and associated interchange ramps to traffic, which is currently estimated to occur by September 15.

Project overview:
I-275, between 5 Mile Road and the I-96/I-696/M-5 Interchange in Wayne and Oakland Counties within Novi, Farmington Hills and Livonia, will be rehabilitated by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). The road surface in this stretch of I-275 is in very poor shape and needs to be fixed immediately. This $70-$80 million project will involve the removal and replacement of the concrete roadway including all interchange ramps, along with the rehabilitation or reconstruction of 16 bridges. It is anticipated northbound and southbound I-275 will be reopened to traffic by mid-September of 2016. In order to achieve this goal of opening in September, this project has been approved for periods of nighttime work.

City of Novi Projects

The City has widened the current Library entrance off 10 Mile Road for the addition of a dedicated left-turn lane. This project is substantially complete and all that remains is restoration behind the back of curb.

The City will be cold milling and resurfacing 1.22 miles of Novi Road (between 12 and 13 Mile Roads), as well as shaping and re-compacting the aggregate base, adding a pavement interlayer fabric to resist reflective cracking, spot replacement of concrete curb and gutter, and the addition of depressed median islands for added storm water control and quality. The contractor is tentatively scheduled to start work on Monday, July 25 and will begin by closing the two outside lanes (one southbound and one northbound) for construction and maintaining traffic on the inner three lanes. The contractor is contractually obligated to finish the project by Sept. 30.

Quince/Tamara Drives

This is the remainder of streets postponed from last year's 2015 Neighborhood Asphalt Road Program, to avoid working while Orchard Hills Elementary was in session. The City also incorporated some ditch enclosure work on July 21.

The City will have three programs this year: two concrete road programs and one asphalt road program. Some street segments require full reconstruction of the existing pavement, while others may require patching or a rehabilitation type of replacement effort. Visit cityofnovi.org to view the street segments and a projected status of each

This project involves the construction of a 10-foot wide asphalt pathway and a 500-foot long boardwalk located within ITC's overhead power line easement from the intersection of 9 Mile and Garfield Roads to the ITC Sports Park at 8 Mile and Napier Roads. This project was expected to be completed by mid-October, but the contractor is significantly ahead of schedule. The pathway and boardwalk are now complete and the contractor has begun the restoration phase.

In August 2012, Novi citizens overwhelmingly passed a road millage allowing for more than $5 million to be used in annual road and pathway investments. Funds will be used to maintain and improve neighborhood (subdivision/side streets) and major municipal roadways (mile roads, Beck Road, etc.), and to make sidewalk and pathway connections.
