What's Happening Now...
Road, Sidewalk and Pathway Construction
The City of Novi prides itself on maintaining open lines of communication and keeping community members apprised of the latest in road and non-motorized construction projects.
The following information is intended to provide an overview of current projects, including those led by the Michigan Department of Transportation and the Road Commission for Oakland County.

Michigan Department of Transportation Updates
Update: The west I-696 ramp to south I-275/east M-5 is closed until the end of May. The detour is north on M-5 to one of the mile roads and then south M-5 to east M-5.
Southbound I-275 and associated interchange ramps are now closed and detoured for construction. It is expected that this work will be completed by July 1. When southbound I-275 work is completed, next will be the closure of and detoured traffic for westbound I-696, from east of Lahser Road to I-275 for two weekends, slated for June. Then the westbound I-696 ramp to southbound I-275 connector will be closed and detoured for construction. Once the contractor's bridge work is complete, southbound I-275 and associated interchanges will be reopened. Then, northbound I-275 will be closed and detoured for construction sometime around mid-summer. Shortly following, eastbound I-696 from I-275 to east of Lahser Road will be closed and detoured for two weekends. Finally, when the contractor has completed the northbound bridge work on northbound I-275, they can then reopen northbound I-275 and associated interchange ramps to traffic, which is currently estimated to occur by September 15, 2016. Project overview:I-275, between 5 Mile Road and the I-96/I-696/M-5 Interchange in Wayne and Oakland Counties within Novi, Farmington Hills and Livonia, will be rehabilitated by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). The road surface in this stretch of I-275 is in very poor shape and needs to be fixed immediately. This $70-$80 million project will involve the removal and replacement of the concrete roadway including all interchange ramps, along with the rehabilitation or reconstruction of 16 bridges. It is anticipated northbound and southbound I-275 will be reopened to traffic by mid-September of 2016. In order to achieve this goal of opening in September, this project has been approved for periods of nighttime work. City of Novi Projects
The City in cooperation with MDOT will be rehabilitating this roadway section in three distinct stages: 1) reconstruction of 9 Mile from Chase Drive east to Meadowbrook Road; 2) mill, overlay and striping of 9 Mile at the CSX Railroad tracks; and 3) mill, overlay and striping of the remainder of 9 Mile from Novi Road to Chase Drive. Stage 1 began with the May 4 closure of Nine Mile Road between Meadowbrook Road and Chase Drive. This stage of construction should take approximately one week.
The City is constructing a six-foot-wide concrete sidewalk and a 12-inch diameter water main along the south side of 14 Mile Road, between Welch Road and the M-5 Freeway. These two improvements will fill the remaining pathway and water main gaps along the 14 Mile corridor. The contractor has completed the installation of the water main and over the next few weeks will begin final grading for the pathway and constructing the retaining wall along a good portion of the pathway.
The City of Novi, in cooperation with MDOT, is widening eastbound Grand River Avenue to incorporate an additional left turn lane to northbound Beck Road. In order to accomplish this widening work, traffic signals, mast arms, poles and sidewalk ramps will need to be replaced at all four intersection quadrants (most of the underground utility work was completed last fall). The contractor has begun removals for the widening work and also started the signal pole excavation. This specific work is expected to be complete by the beginning of May.
Two street segments in the Chase Farms Subdivision (Trent Court and Sudbury Court) could not be completed last year due to weather constraints. The contractor has started removing concrete this week at Trent Court and will be moving over to Sudbury Court next week. The City is also reconstructing the asphalt portion of the boulevard entrance of Chase Drive off of Nine Mile Road. This work will start this week and should be complete by mid-May. This work will also involve closures to the entrance and only one-way, southbound traffic will be allowed from Nine Mile. Exiting traffic will be directed to Eight Mile Road.

In August 2012, Novi citizens overwhelmingly passed a road millage allowing for more than $5 million to be used in annual road and pathway investments. Funds will be used to maintain and improve neighborhood (subdivision/side streets) and major municipal roadways (mile roads, Beck Road, etc.), and to make sidewalk and pathway connections.
