Friday, November 14

After a wonderful breakfast, the team went outside for a group photo with all of the Honduran staff. One serious and of course, one with the silly props, used at the beginning of the week for the birthday party. After the photo session, we promptly loaded the bus to head to our last community, Quebraditas, which means "little creeks."

The medical clinic was staffed by Jessica, Dr. Eapan, Crystal and Shirley. They saw a total of 165 patients with 2 pediatric referrals. Dale and Donnie were in the pharmacy with some assistance from Yolanda and Barrett who were simultaneously doing inventory. Susan and Peggy continued to assist Dr. Adam in the dental clinic with 23 patients and 33 extractions. Elmer, Julie, and Neal were in the eye clinic. Their total for the day was 23 patients provided 36 pairs of glasses. In deworming/fluoride/vitamin A clinic, Laura and Sean had totals of 81 deworming, 26 fluoride, and 36 vitamin A.

We returned from the community and began the closing inventory. Working hard together, we finished almost everything just in time for dinner. We were surprised with frozen chocolate-covered bananas for dessert!

Reflections after dinner:

Julie loved the eye clinic so much yesterday afternoon that she went back today. She stated that it was so rewarding to see the instant gratification by their smiles after fitting them with glasses. Neal felt that this was a very thankful community. After clinic he enjoyed playing soccer with a lot of the kids. Crystal and Jessica agreed that there were lots of colds to be treated. After helping Yolanda with the pharmacy inventory, Barrett was able to play "trompo" with some of the kids. This is a game that involves something similar to what we call a "top" in the U.S.

Although busy in the deworming clinic, Laura and Sean still found time to color and take photos with the children. They mostly enjoyed seeing the children's reactions when they viewed their faces on the digital screen. Sean gave his cross to a little girl whose face was scarred due to a previous infection. He had the translator tell her how beautiful she was and that he will always pray for her.

Donnie cleaned a lot of ears today and everyone agreed he was the "Ear King."

Yolanda thanked everyone for their hard work with inventory. She praised everyone, stated that she has a lot of respect for Susan and Peggy in the dental clinic as she would not be able do what they did. Peggy gave her cross to a woman who had three teeth removed and needed stitches. Shirley felt that the translators did an excellent job this week. They truly care about the patients and it was obvious that it wasn't just a job to them. Everyone agreed; they were very much appreciated.

After devotions, Shirley and Nury thanked everyone for being a wonderful team. The team presented Shirley with a very small token of appreciation for being an awesome leader. Then the team went right back to complete the inventory! After a long hard, yet rewarding week we are looking forward to a cultural day tomorrow!

Sincerely,

Laura and Dale ("The Stenographer") for the Dinwiddie Team
