Tuesday, November 12

The team shared a special breakfast with the Honduran staff. Nury went around the table and introduced each of them, explaining their role with Friends of Barnabas. This gave all of the missioners, both returning and new, the chance to meet the people who make it possible for the many successful missions we've had over the years.

We visited a community called El Gavilan which means "the Hawk." Papa Joe was told that several hawks have been spotted there! The trip up the winding steep mountain was two hours long. However the cheering from the community members when we arrived made the long, bumpy ride worth it. The team members in the medical clinic saw a total of 148 patients with three pediatric referrals. This made for a busy day for the pharmacy. In the dental clinic, 27 patients were seen with 33 extractions. A few more patients today were seen in the eye clinic with a total of 22 patients and 38 pairs of glasses given out.

The totals from deworming/fluoride/vitamin A were: 34 deworming, 10 fluoride and 10 vitamin A.

On the way down the mountain from the community, the main road was being smoothed out by a tractor. The ground was very soft and the bus needed assistance making it up the steep hill. The tractor driver helped by connecting the wench and pulled us up. The entire team decided to give the tractor driver a cross. He very proudly accepted it and put it on immediately.

Reflections from the day after we returned safely and ate dinner:

Susan and Peggy again were very impressed with the children that came through the dental clinic as they were all very brave. Donnie was interested in seeing the other clinics in progress, so he stepped out from the pharmacy for a few minutes. He also was very impressed by children in dental clinics. Most of them didn't cry with the extractions.

Papa Joe enjoyed painting nails again today. He shared that one little girl was fascinated by his white hair. He didn't understand it until someone reminded him that there are not many Hondurans with white hair! Dr. Eapen feels this country is destined to prosper. He also stated that no matter how much he studies Spanish, no one can understand his Spanish with a "southern accent." For those that don't know him; he is from India!

Jessica saw a lot more infections and wounds in this community. Something so easily treated in the U.S. can be such a big deal in Honduras, as they do not have easy access to medical care. She was grateful for Yolanda's assistance with the abscesses.

Neal's favorite part of the day was the drive up and down the mountain! He is always eager to hop off and assist when needed!

Shirley's favorite part of the day was sharing breakfast with the Honduran staff. Crystal prepared another inspirational devotion for us. The point was that the worth of things often depends upon whose hands they are placed in; and that ultimately everything should be put in God's hands.

After devotions Nury ended the night by conducting what she called Honduran culture night. She explained the history of Honduras. One fun fact was that Christopher Columbus landed in Gracias a Dios, meaning "thank you God." Honduras means "deep waters." These names came about because it is said that Columbus' first words when he landed was "Thank you God for getting me out of these deep waters!"

We are all feeling blessed, and humbled, by what we have seen thus far! We are eager to continue serving and shining our lights!

Sincerely,

Laura and Dale ("The Stenographer") for the Dinwiddie Team
