November 9-17, 2013

Sunday, November 10

Laura woke up to find that a gecko had made friends with her during the night and left a few presents on the bed. And it was not a chocolate mint with turn down service! This was a bit disturbing to her so she was full of questions; one of which was, "Do they bite?" Dale jokingly responded with, "Of course not! They just sell insurance!"

After breakfast, we all quickly got into work mode completing the inventory for the entire week. Yolanda, Jessica, Julie, and Dr. Eapen worked hard in the bodega, organizing and sorting medications by expiration date.

Laura, Sean, and Donnie sorted and prepared the clinic and "give away" duffels that are full of tooth brushes, diapers, clothes, books, pencils, soccer balls, air pumps, jump ropes and shoes for each community. Neal inventoried the glasses for the eye clinic.

Once those tasks were completed, they all joined Dale, Shirley, Papa Joe, Peggy, Barrett, Crystal, and Susan to finish packaging frequently used medications that are given out during clinic.

After working hard all morning, we had time to visit the beautiful waterfalls nearby. Susan, Barrett, and Neal braved the zip line high above the waterfall.

When we returned, Nury gave us the history of the Friends of Barnabas Foundation, as well as, a tour of the whole facility. During the tour, Nury explained about the knowledge deficit of the country regarding agriculture and how unfortunate it is because of the great potential the land holds. One of the plants growing on the property is the Moringa tree. The entire team tasted the leaves of the tree; we all agreed it tasted like broccoli with a spicy after taste. For the returning members, it was exciting to see the upgrades that were completed since their previous trip such as the lockers for each patient to use during their stay and a play set.

Today we were able to meet several other missionaries. One specifically was Jennifer with baby Jetson. Jennifer spends nine months each year in Honduras caring for malnourished children and educating their families in her home. Baby Jetson is eight and a half months old, yet weighed eleven pounds and has obvious developmental delays. This was a good reminder to our team of why are called to missions here in Honduras.

After dinner, we ended the night with devotions by Crystal about the five finger prayer followed by a second devotion by Shirley. Shirley gave her reflection by candle light, focusing on the theme of the week of being the light of Christ.

Several of us gathered around the table sharing stories before we head to bed. We are all anxious for our first clinic tomorrow!

Sincerely,
