Mountain Medical Team
Martinsville

October 19-27, 2013

Thursday, October 24

Today, the mountain medical team journeyed three hours south to the community of Montañuela. The Lencas, an indigenous people to this area, were the folks we would be treating. While the journey up the mountain was long, the countryside was beautiful! We stopped halfway at the top of a mountain for a photo moment as the view was spectacular! The team also stopped for breakfast at Siguatepeque. This town is in the middle of the Americas. It lies literally midway between Alaska and Argentina.

Nury had prepared us that today would be our longest day; in part because of the longer travel up the mountain, but also because we would be seeing many people with many needs.

The highlights of the day was Nury giving away her cross and the team having its 300,000th patient encounter. Dr. Judy saw a couple who Nury had met in previous visits to the clinic. Dr. Judy had asked if the woman was pregnant and the woman replied sadly "no." She and her husband had been trying to have a child for 14 years. They began to cry and Nury came over. Nury, Dr. Judy and the couple prayed at that moment. Nury placed her cross around the woman's neck and asked that God be with them.

Dr. Will was privileged to experience the 300,000th patient encounter of Friends of Barnabas' medical teams. This encounter was with a 4-year-old boy named Jefri. He hit the jackpot! Jefri was given a number of gifts including a soccer ball, balloons, hand puppets and a box of crayons for his school. As you can see from the picture, some of the team celebrated with Jefri.

The team left exhausted but rewarded by the knowledge that they had served so many. The medical team saw 368 patients; Dr. Jimmy (the lone dentist) and his team saw 31; the eye team saw 26; however the real workers for the day were Sandy and Sylvia, who saw over 260 children between them in the deworming clinic!

So goodnight and rest well, Martinsville Mountain Medical Team, you deserve it!
