Today the team went to Mojarras, about an hour south of Barnabas House, below Lake Yojoa. The team had quite an adventure just getting to the village. About a half hour into the trip we had a flat tire. We had to stop and have the tire repaired by local mechanics. It was a good thing we did because the rest of the trip was equally challenging. The roads we traveled went from gravel to dirt and then to streams!

Yes, our bus became a boat so that we could cross over some small rapids! As we got close to Mojarras, the bus had to cross some small bridges, more like planks. But thanks to Elmer, we arrived safely to our destination.
As we work in the different communities, there are always a few local "abuelas," who make us sweet bread and strong Hondurian coffee! The people are so appreciative of our efforts and they look forward to the return of the next mountain medical team from Friends of Barnabas.
The theme for everyone today seemed to be positive. Inspirational stories were shared by each team member after dinner. Two team members gave away their crosses today. Jennifer gave hers to a woman who feared she may have a terminal illness and did not want to die and leave her three children without a mother. Why this woman chose Jennifer with whom to share her fears was serendipitous. Jennifer had taken the time to put nail polish on a little girl who caught her eye earlier. Jennifer did not know until later that the little girl was the daughter of this woman. Many tears were shared by Jennifer, the mother and other team members.
Susan gave her cross to a 14-year-old girl who came in with her younger sister for dental work. The girl's name was "Merci," and she saw the dentist before her younger sister. Her dental procedure lasted over 30 minutes and was challenging for the team. However, Merci was "grace under fire." She never flinched, serving as a role model for the other children. This girl so moved Susan's heart that she had to give her the cross.
The team has experienced such memorable moments, tears of joy, and bursts of laughter. We have to thank the staff at Barnabas House, and especially Nury for these moments. Last evening, Nury provided us with a history of Honduras, the people, the economy and plans for the future. She ended the night by getting the team to make "Bananas Foster" -- just when we thought we could not keep our eyes open for another minute, Nury has all of us cooking!

Once again the mountain team is ready for their next adventure!
