After our morning devotions, we traveled to the marketplace in San Pedro Sula to enjoy some shopping before heading to the airport to depart from this beautiful country, We are apprehensive about making the connecting flight in Miami in order to arrive home on time tonight. It has been a busy week and we are fatigued but also grateful for this opportunity.
As I watched the group interact today, I was awed by the strength of each member. Within us are future and current nurses and nurse midwives, future and current doctors, powerful teachers, paramedics, ministers and young adults heading to college and high school in a few weeks. All of these people made a conscious choice to spend a week of their summer to serve the children of Honduras. Our team leaders Patti and Hadley did a great job organizing us and keeping us focused. It was a special opportunity for our group to share the Honduran experience and bond with Mary Beth and Beth as they take on new leadership roles with the Friends of Barnabas.
It is comforting to know that compassionate teachers like Sarah and Kelly will be teaching young children this year and living by example. If I ever have to call 911, I hope that someone like Daniel or Jessica will be the first responder or the one to care for me in the Emergency Room. College campuses will be blessed to have Mary and Sam on site this year to be involved in campus life. Larry will continue to have a powerful impact on those who need his help. Dr. Ed will be an ambassador for the Honduran children and for his California patients as well. Kaivalya, Haley and Katey return to high school where they will no doubt share this experience with friends and continue their commitment to help others. As for me, I will return to the hospital and care for the ill adults that need me, but my practice will be forever changed. The memories of the smiles of Honduran villagers will brighten my days.
This mountain medical team was only one of many teams that serve in Honduras this year. There is great power when people come together with a common goal and it all starts with the "Power of One." We challenge everyone to be a part of this worthy cause. If you aren't sure what YOU can do, I am sure that any team member would be happy to point you in the right direction.
Hasta luego.
