| Just seven days ago, a group of individuals left Richmond; most with no clear picture of exactly what we would be doing. Today, we completed our fifth mountain medical mission visit and it was awesome to watch the precise unloading of the bus and setting up stations for medical, optical, anti-parasite and dental. We functioned as a team and have built friendships and bonds that will last a lifetime. As Larry would say "it has been a powerful experience." We have been lovingly cared for by the Friends of Barnabas staff as we have cared lovingly for the people of Honduras.
Today, in the smaller village of El Ocotal, we met Elena, an eight-year-old girl who was waiting for us this morning with a smile. Her family of eight came through Terry's medical station and she smiled the whole time. While she waited patiently to be seen, she formed a bond with Kelly and she left with Kelly's cross. We met a feisty 86-year-old Theodora, who came dressed in a beautiful yellow dress sporting her new sun glasses she got at the eye clinic. She was a mother of 13 children! We also met Marta and her husband Louis. They were in their mid-60s and while talking with them, we learned that she had given birth to 17 children! We are amazed by the constitution, gratitude and fortitude of the Honduran people.
Lives have been changed this week; missions have become clearer and we have had the opportunity of a lifetime to share God's love and impact lives. We were all meant to be here together as team this week; it is God's plan after all. The young and the old, the experienced and the newbies all are serving together!
Last night, we received letters from second and fourth grade students from the Richmond area. Many had colorful pictures and sweet notes written thanking us for what we were doing! They were greatly appreciated.
Tomorrow morning, we will leave the Alfredo house and beautiful countryside to head to the coast for our cultural day before heading home on Sunday. It will be sad to leave but we leave a piece of us behind, a legacy if you will, and many of us will return again. We have enjoyed our time here and our service to the people of Honduras!
