We headed out this morning with great excitement to Terrero Blanco about an hour and a half away from Casa de Bernabe. This village was beautiful and we were welcomed with smiles and handshakes all around! Given FOB's continued presence in their communities, the early patients of the day were generally quite healthy. We saw 329 in medical, 37 in eye clinic with 50 pairs of glasses given out. De-worming was busy with 217 folks receiving medication, 40 got Vitamin A and there were 4 referrals.
As the day progressed we encountered Tatiana, who was quite small for her age and who came to see Dr. Phil. As the story unfolded, it was discovered that she was HIV positive and had lost her mother to AIDS. Her aunt cares for her and she is on an anti-retroviral medical regimen. Though having trouble with dizziness, she was so very cheerful and an inspiration to all. David had given Nury his cross earlier in the week and it was forwarded to Tatiana who was thrilled.
Mary Kay and Ryan saw a young man who had polio as a young child and was weak on his left side, with little use of his left arm. In true Honduran fashion, he has adapted amazingly well and using only his left arm and hand, he removed a hiking boot and sock to show us his foot, all in about 30 seconds. The smile on his face brought joy to our day!
One little boy, Yeison, had severe club feet and the only solution is surgery; unfortunately for now, his mother is not quite ready to take that step. Tatiana, a beautiful little girl with cerebral palsy, visited with Dr. Al and then made her way to de-worming where she charmed all with her infectious smile! She too received a cross - this time from Molly! A lovely 87-year-old woman charmed everyone in eye and medical clinic and received Dori's cross.
After a long week, everyone seems to be well and in good spirits today and we are so grateful - God is good. We continue to be blessed every day by the wonderful people we are here to serve. Their example of humble gratitude is an inspiration to us all.
