Today, the team visited the community of Los Globos, about an hour and a half drive by bus from the Barnabas House. The bus ride was very exciting as the bus climbed mountain dirt roads and went through a few switchback turns. One team member said she knew that it would be a good volunteer day when a Honduran lady approached her from the line of people waiting for us and gave her a hug and a kiss as she exited the bus.
The team felt that the people of Los Globos tended to be a bit older than those in the other villages. Their overall health was very good. It was a smaller village and 193 patients were treated, 30 patients were fitted for eye glasses, 126 patients received de-worming medication, 28 patients received fluoride treatments and 34 patients received a Vitamin A treatment.
The Honduran families were dressed up in their best clothes and seemed grateful for the care and attention given them. A tradition among the Honduras work team is for each member to receive a small wooden cross on arrival to Honduras. Team member Susan gave her cross to a Honduran girl with Down Syndrome named Wendy. Wendy, who had a very sweet expression on her face, was part of a large family that took very good care of her.
The young boy, Enrique, with severe asthma from yesterday's clinic, was a concern for the whole team. A phone call to his mother today brought the good news that his condition has greatly improved. A neighbor plans to drive the mother and son to the hospital tomorrow for follow-up care.
