Mountain Medical Mission

Rockbridge Team

  June 22  - 30, 2013

Friday

After a night of torrential downpour, crazy thunder and lightning, we all awoke this morning with one question. Can we still go to the community today? Nury quickly explained that it was not safe for us to make the trip up the mountain village. With sad faces, we began counting inventory and getting supplies ready for the next team. We had to trust that God had a bigger plan and we quickly went to work as we reflected on the stories of the past week.

By the afternoon, the sun was shining brightly and we ventured to a nearby community where Elmer, our bus driver, lived. Families gathered at a local church. We had the opportunity to play with the children and give them refreshments. Pascuala (the nurse at Barnabas house) sang songs and told Bible stories. What a great time we had, stepping away from medical work to play and spend time with local Hondurans. Later, we arrived back at Barnabas house, had dinner and read devotions.

Our devotion focused on how the church does not sleep when there is God's kingdom to build. We continued to build God's kingdom through the new relationships with these families. Just being there meant a lot to all of us!

We know that we are not the first or last team of missionaries here. Many teams come through Friends of Barnabas Foundation. Nury also reassured us that the local nurses and doctor would go to the community where we had planned to go today so the people of the community would not be left unattended. The church truly does not sleep.

At the close of the evening, Doris, our team leader, was presented with a slide show of gratitude, made by Fay. Fay met Doris six months ago at a fundraiser for the team. After a lovely conversation, Doris suggested she should go on the trip with us. Who knew that conversation would change Fay's life forever? I have included a few pictures from the slide show presentation. Thank you, Doris, for your hard work!
