San Antonio

A restful night for most, and our first day of clinics begins. Breakfast, at 6:30 a.m., included cheese and ham omelets, juice, cereal, and toast or bread depending on your preference.

We left around 7:30 for a one hour trip to San Antonio (you didn't realize we could get to Texas that fast from Honduras, did you?). San Antonio is a relatively small village close to a flowing river. We set up, as we often do, in several classrooms and an outside covered porch or common area. We had five medical clinic tables and the dental and eye clinics in three of the rooms. De-worming, vitamin A, fluoride treatments and ear washes were done at the common area.

After a few hours of seeing residents and those that walked to San Antonio from other areas, we took some time for a meal. The lunch today included refried beans, pineapple, guacamole (this recipe includes eggs and has a milder taste than you might find in the U.S.) and fruit juice. Peanut butter and bread were also available. We continued seeing residents through the afternoon and left around 4pm

.

All told, the numbers by the end of the day are as follows.

Ear Washes - 5

Eye Clinic - 31

Fluoride Treatments - 38

Dental Clinic - 71 patients and 83 extractions

Vitamin A - 91

 De-worming - 160

Medical Clinic - 260

Our dinner at 6pm included a main dish of tilapia with mixed vegetables, rice, broccoli, tortillas, juice, and flan for dessert. The fish and vegetables were partially cooked on a large wok-like iron grill that was placed at the table. We had devotion from Lori Touart, and Carrie Christ played the flute while we sang a couple of hymns.

As I am writing, we are essentially finishing the day with some more bagging of medications. We will be serving the community of El Cerron Tuesday, located in the area of Taulabe, Comayagua. El Cerron has approximately 105 families.

We heard about the Boston bombing on our way back to Barnabas House. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families affected by such a senseless act.
