Sunday was a beautiful day here in Honduras! The sun was shining and we had a very productive day preparing for the week ahead.
With a little downtime during the morning we were able to see some of Gods beautiful work at a local waterfall! Returning to Casa de Alfredo, we went to work helping in the process of "beating the beans" and had way too much fun doing it!
Red beans are probably the largest and most profitable crop for the Hondurans. They are growing in the Barnabas House Garden both for use in the kitchen and for sale. The beans we helped with today were just picked and had been planted in December, a quick growing crop. There were at least 4 tarps full of the beans in their pods, freshly picked. 'Beating' is a process to get the beans out of the "shell" they grow in. One heaping pile at a time, 2 people used a long stick to beat the beans to break open the shells and the beans start flying out all over the place. The process makes a big mess, but we had so much fun doing it. After the piles were beaten, we worked as a group to individually go through and make sure that no beans were left behind. The whole process took about one and a half hours to do, but Nury was so grateful for our help because it would have taken the staff hours to do what we knocked out in less than two hours working as a team to get the job done. It was a great team building task to prepare us for the week!
By evening all the duffels we brought with us were emptied and sorted to prepare our supplies for the communities we will be visiting this week. Vitamins and other medicines were counted and sorted into bags, diapers, clothes, glasses and other supplies organized into bins for each day.
A hard day's work ended with enjoying a fabulous meal out at a restaurant called D&D, devotional time and discussion of our plans for tomorrow; team members were ready for bed!
We are looking forward to tomorrow, visiting the first village for the week and serving the people of Honduras!
