A Few Thoughts from Ed...

Welcome back to our monthly newsletter. Peggy and I sincerely hope you find our newsletter format informative and useful.   Many of you know my passion for photography and last month we spent a week at Yellowstone National Park enjoying some great photo opportunities. It was a trip to remember and I was able to get some very unique landscape and wildlife photos. A special thanks to (Michael) one of our members who shares my photo passion for letting me borrow a fantastic professional lens which allowed me to get some wildlife pictures that were beyond the reach of my own equipment.   As an added bonus to yours truly Peggy showed a great eye and a talent in her own right as she captured the shot of the trip...a bear mouth wide open and full of berries.

With the fall season I find my travel schedule picking up again. In the last few weeks I taught at the NRA Range Development in DC and attended a Retailer's Advisory board meeting for a major distributor and inspected an indoor range in AZ. The NRA conference was again a sold out affair filled with nearly 100 potential new shooting range owners. Many of these attendees will never progress their project to the point of completion but a few will. By attending this conference they have a much better perspective as to what our industry is all about.

I feel so privileged to be on the retail advisory board of one of the nation's leading distributors. The distributor gets direct feedback from myself and the other 7 retailers but selfishly we gain deeper insight into the state of our industry. I wish with this new found wisdom I could answer all your ammo availability questions, but that is not the case. I did however learn an interesting ammo statistic that I want to share with you. In 2009 the total of all the rounds of ammunition manufactured and imported into the USA was 4.9 Billion. In 2012 that total increased to 11.9 billion rounds. What I found very interesting in these unimaginable totals was how the ammo quantities were broken down. In 2012 shotgun ammo made up 4.5 billion and rimfire made up 4.9 billion rounds. That means that the balance of the 11.9 billion rounds were made up of centerfire rifle and handgun calibers. The sad part of all of this is the fact that 11.9 billion rounds is just about max capacity in the industry. What does that mean to us and the prospects of more ammo? Who knows?

Some of you have noticed we have a couple of team members who have been absent due to some health issues and we are very pleased to tell you they are both doing very well and will soon be back to work. Thank you all for your prayers and all your best wishes. Speaking of team members, we now have two additional employees to introduce to you this month. Please read about Andy and Greg below.

I am constantly gratified by the quality and efforts of our team. I know we are not perfect but we try hard and customer service is always our top priority. In an effort to help in our overall operations and in keeping with our policy to promote from within I am happy to announce the addition of Reagan Diver to our management team. Reagan will join Ken as assistant manager and together with Deb our Facility Manager we will have a management team member available to you and or staff just about every hour we are open.

A new program in support of the female shooters in our area begins this month. Please read more about "The Well Armed Woman Program" below.

Just a reminder that we have over 60 handguns in our rental case and our $7 a caliber handgun rentals are free to our members.  Don't forget to take advantage of this perk of membership.  AND our full auto is back up and running. Thank you for your patience during our struggle to get parts for repair.

Personal Assault Response Techniques (PART)

After a long awaited development period we finally offered the PART class a few weeks ago.   I learned a lot about this course as it went along and the feedback from the students has been tremendously helpful.  One of the suggestions was to make this class a two day class and that is a serious possibility.

The class does incorporate a bunch of basic effective hand to hand  techniques that need practice and repetition in order to understand and perfect.  So rest assured we are adjusting the curriculum to the class we believe will soon be our most beneficial if not most popular.

If you have not seen the syllabus for the PART class below is a quick snapshot. This class includes pre-attack  indicators, hand to hand defensive techniques designed to control your attacker and of course allow you to fight your way to your handgun.  This class is appropriate for all ages and skill levels.  Students must have a concealed carry permit or receive prior approval from the instructor.

PART Class

Re-take policy new and improved!

We have made a change in our re-take policy. As I have stated many times we will always offer the re-take any class forever for free policy. But, we have had a growing number of people who sign up for a re-take but then do not show up for the class. This is a real problem and a huge disservice to those wanting into a class but not able to get a slot. SO, WE HAVE MADE A CHANGE IN OUR RE-TAKE POLICY.  If a student signs up for a re-take and does not show up and has not given us notice within 24 hrs they will lose their ability to re-take the class. They will have to pay for the class again to re-establish the re-take ability. It is my hope that this new policy will encourage re-takes to call in and cancel if they will not be showing up which will allow us to offer the slot to someone else.  Thank you for understanding and supporting us.
TWO New Team Members...

attack Announcing the New
ENHANCED ID CCW
CTS-300

November 18th and 24th

Setting the standard in concealed carry training as we have for the last 9 years we are pleased to announce our completely revised Concealed Carry Training Courses. Our new ENHANCED Permit class (CTS - 300) exceeds all Idaho State requirements for the new enhanced permit.

As you know we have resisted offering the enhanced class until it had gained enough acceptance to warrant you spending the time, money and going through the effort to meet the requirements. We believe for some of our students the enhanced version of the Idaho CCW permit still will not make sense.   For the majority of our students, the combination of the Idaho Basic permit and the Utah permit still makes the most sense. Remember, so far Washington still does not honor either Idaho permit.

The Idaho enhanced permit is a separate permit from the standard Idaho concealed carry permit. It requires additional training to obtain, and is intended to allow you to carry in more States than the standard permit. The enhanced permit is optional, and standard permits will still be issued to those who do not want to undertake the additional training.

Here's a little info on our new CCW programs. We have incorporated the Idaho basic permit class with our New Enhanced CTS-300 class. That means if you only want to get the Basic ID permit you just need to attend the morning session of the CTS - 300 training course and qualify in our standard 20 rd course of fire as we have always offered. So, those of you only wanting the Basic ID CCW permit, this means you'll still be signing up for CTS-200, but it will be 4 hours on the same day as CTS-300. Certification for the CTS-300 class will require completion of 100 rds of fire in a qualification course of fire.

This is a course for everyone interested in a comprehensive overview of the responsibilities and issues in carrying a concealed weapon. Topics include Idaho law, Firearms safety, Marksmanship / Defensive shooting, Awareness, Ballistic consideration, Use of Force issues, Legal process, Your actions pre and post incident, and Firearm qualification.

Required equipment:

  • Handgun
  • Strong Side Holster with a Good Belt
  • Extra Magazines or Speed Loaders
  • Ammunition 125 rds
  • Eyes and Ear Protection

Pre-requisites include successful completion of a CTS 100 level course or the student must possess a basic understanding of handgun safety and demonstrate proficiency.  Students who have not completed CTS-101 the Basic Pistol course must contact the instructor prior to registration for approval. THIS COURSE IS NOT A SHOOTING COURSE. YOU MUST KNOW HOW TO SHOOT AND WILL BE QUALIFYING IN THIS CLASS.

Cost of the Class:

            Idaho Enhanced CTS-300 $110.00

Idaho Basic CTS-200  $90.00 (morning session only)

WELCOME "The Well Armed Woman Program"

On Tuesday evening Oct 15 at 5pm we will offer the first meeting of the local chapter of this National Woman's program. Carrie Lightfoot started this unique program at the National level. When asked why she started the organization here is what she said:

"When I began thinking about purchasing and carrying a gun several years ago, there was no single resource for a woman gun owner and shooter. I was frustrated and disappointed to discover that there were so few resources out there that provided straight forward and complete information and products geared specifically toward me as a woman gun owner in this male-driven industry. The information I did find was often condescending and sometimes downright insulting. They simply weren't talking to me or meeting my needs as a woman interested in gun ownership. Now, The Well Armed Woman is the complete resource for the woman gun owner." - Carrie Lightfoot

From the very beginning we planned this facility from the ground up with the woman shooter in mind. I know we have always done our best to offer all shooters men and woman the best products, service, and experience. This is why we are very excited to support the local TWAW chapter on the 3rd Tuesday evening every month.

Please support this group of like minded female shooters and non shooters. Come in on the 15th and meet new friends, socialize, learn and shoot your way to a great evening of fun. Welcome Ladies...and Good Luck!

Terminal Ballistics ...   Nov 17thhollow point

If we peaked your interest about gunshot trauma in our CCW or defensive classes, you won't want to miss the "how the trauma is caused" class we call Terminal Ballistics. This is the class that will put to rest all the myths of stopping power, knockdown power and dispel much of what we see on TV and in the movies.

This class is based on fact and science as well as testing by men and woman a lot smarter than me. However, I have studied terminal ballistics for over 30 years and have been fortunate enough to surround myself with people who live this terminal ballistic life as a profession. This is a class you will not want to miss.

Monthly Tip...

Home Defense and the SHOTGUN!

Home defense is often cited by many of our guests as the reason they are considering a firearm purchase. Often suggested but I fear seldom understood is the shotgun. Like so many aspects in firearms as defensive alternatives, shotguns are shrouded by so many wives tales and miss information. I believe a shotgun offers the shooter significant advantages that I will share with you here.

These advantages include: affordability, ease of use, trauma causing ability, and even the ability to win the fight without a single shot being fired (however don't count on it).

There are no perfect firearms for everyone's needs. Every firearm has its own set of pros and cons that must be considered. Considering that most home defense gun encounters will be very close range situations, the shotgun takes first place on my list of home defense options.

Shotguns come in either single-or double-barrel variants and in pump and semi-automatic actions. Double-barreled shotguns have two triggers, one for each barrel. Side-by-side barrels are the most common, while the "over-and-under" variant has one barrel stacked upon another. If you've heard the term "give it to him with both barrels," now you know where that comes from. Most people don't realize this, but double-barrel shotguns do not run perfectly parallel to one another; they are configured so their shot will converge, typically at a distance of 40 yards.

I often hear people say "You Don't Have to Be a Good Shot when It Comes to Shotguns". That is not necessarily the case especially when Personal Defense Ammo is used. I often see Home Defense shotguns in class shoot under 4 inch groups of 00 Buck at 15 yds. That means you can't just point the gun downrange and press the trigger without consideration of the target.

One 12-gauge shotgun shell can discharge nine .33 caliber pellets with a single trigger pull. Considering that a 9mm handgun fires just a single bullet of nearly the same caliber at slower velocities, you would have to aim and fire nine separate times with your handgun and still not have the same trauma result. Plus you'd be giving your adversary extra time to advance on you and take you down.

Another unique benefit inherent to a shotgun is the wide variety of ammunition it can use. Shotgun ammo comes as shot (multiple projectiles per shell) or slugs (one projectile per shell). A typical self-defense load of buckshot contains 8 to 27 large lead pellets, resulting in either a tight or wide spread pattern based upon the range to the target. Shotgun pellets are less likely to penetrate walls and strike innocent bystanders.

Shotguns offer many advantages to the home defender. Like handguns and rifles, shotguns come in various bore sizes. Shotgun barrel diameters are typically measured in terms of gauge, commonly 12, 20 and .410 gauge. Other gauges like 10, 16, and 28 are still available but are much less popular.

The 12 gauge variant is universally the most popular. The barrel has an inside diameter equal to that of a 1/12th pound sphere of lead. A 20 gauge barrel is smaller, equating to the diameter of 1/20th lb. sphere of lead. An exception to the bore standard of measurement is the very popular .410 caliber shotgun.

One downside of a shotgun is the recoil. A variety of factors weigh into the amount of kick a shotgun unleashes. First there is the bore size, followed by the load. If the recoil is a concern, consider using a 20-gauge instead of a 12-gauge. Additionally, semi-automatic shotguns help reduce the recoil but come with higher price tags. No matter which one you choose, be sure to get plenty of practice so you'll be able to comfortably handle your shotgun when your life may be on the line.

Shotguns versus Handguns - a comparison:

  • One of the major advantages of a shotgun is the spread pattern of the shot itself. A shotgun firing at a target of 25 feet will typically have a spread pattern of 8-10 inches in diameter - a vastly broader impact zone than a single bullet, therefore making it easier to hit a target. In a typical home defensive scenario, your aim with a shotgun is more forgiving.
  • Shotguns generally pack more of a punch than a typical handgun.
  • Shotguns make it easier to engage multiple targets.
  • Shotguns are perceived as more dangerous than a handgun which gives the intruder or criminal cause to turn around and run.
  • Pump action shotguns are generally less expensive than a high-quality handgun. Semi-automatic shotguns are more expensive but save reload time.
  • Shotguns are less regulated than handguns or rifles.

Let's talk about ammo choices. There are two schools of thought regarding what type of shotgun ammo is best for personal defense. Many shotgun enthusiasts believe 00 buckshot loads are the most effective because of their high impact. The other school of thought is going with a less penetrating load with a wider spread, such as #4 load with 27 buckshot pellets.

I'm not a huge fan of the # 4 shot theory. I'm not blind to the benefit of the bigger spread and also the lack of wall penetration often sighted in the #4 discussions. It is in fact the lack of the penetration of the #4 shot that is my concern. We can only shoot another human being to STOP the threat. I'm not sure we have the best potential for stopping the threat with the #4 shot. That is why I am a believer in the 00 Buck in the 12 and 20 gauge guns and the 000 Buck in the .410.

I am a big fan of the .410 gauge home defense shotgun. I'm not talking about your grandpa's .410 gun that he used for dove hunting. I'm talking about a .410 gauge shotgun that is designed specifically for home defense. Don't under estimate the ease of use and the lack of recoil benefits this weapon's platform offers the user. In our advanced shotgun class we even breech doors with the .410 which is often done at the surprise of the shooter. The .410 is a definite option for home defense. That being said, if the 12 or 20 gauge can be safely and effectively used by everyone in the household then I would always consider those calibers first.

For those with fewer budgetary restraints, the semi-automatic shotgun offers such advantages as high rate of fire, high ammo capacity, ease of use, and tactical configuration possibilities.

We can't have this discussion without talking about the "Shotgun Racking Sound Fear Factor". Simply calling out "I have a gun"; and racking a round into your shotgun may be enough to scare off an intruder. However, much of today's criminal element may not be scared off by idle threats. Never count on the fear factor as a method of defense...If it works, be grateful.
