A Few Thoughts from Ed...
July is here and so is summer. What an exciting time around CTS. It is great to be home for a while and we have so much to look forward to in the next few weeks.
I must begin this newsletter with a few words about our 2nd annual August 10th Customer/Community appreciation day. We were so excited about last year's event and all that we as a community were able to accomplish. Now the challenge is to be bigger, better, and more giving to this awesome community and our three primary benefactors this year.
Again this year's event will support the Post Falls Food Bank, Inland Northwest Blood Bank, and the USMC Toys for Tots program. How can we go wrong supporting these agencies?
Here's our dilemma, last year overloaded the blood mobile to the point they turned away donors. This year they are sending two blood mobiles. That means we need to meet the challenge and overload both these units this year. They say it can't be done, I say we can. The shooting community can do it! Please sign up and make an appointment to give on August 10th.
Like last year we will give a ticket for a chance to win many grand prizes for every food item or every toy donated. That's right, bring in 24 cans of food and get 24 tickets. At the very minimum we will be giving away a home defense shotgun, and two pistols. The firearms and many higher dollar prizes will be given away that day.
In addition FREE shooting, children's activities, free food, free clinics, special surprise guests, Spokane Chief's mascot Boomer, truck load sales, and special vendor booths and too many more things to talk about here will all make for a perfect tribute to the local community. Mark your calendars.
Notes from Peggy: Just a reminder that we are now on Facebook. We're asking everyone on Facebook to please "like us" and I'm open for any help or suggestions. If you know anyone who might like to get our newsletter, just send me their email address and I'll see that they receive it. peggy@centertargetsports.com Remember ladies shoot free with the purchase of a box of ammo all day Thursdays. If you're coming to Center Target for a class or seminar and need a place to stay we have negotiated special rates at the Holiday Inn Express-Coeur d'Alene. Just give them our name when you call. 208-667-3100. |
Coming in September ...An Awesome new class
Personal Assault Response Techniques (PART)
After two years of development we are very proud to offer our newest class "Personal Assault Response Techniques (PART)". We believe this class will quickly become our most popular class ever. This is the class that combines the skills and techniques necessary to survive the street assault or attack.
This class will include pre-attack indicators, hand to hand defensive techniques designed to control your attacker and of course allow you to fight your way to your handgun. This class is appropriate for all ages and skill levels. Students must have a concealed carry permit or receive prior approval from the instructor.
Watch for the September schedule for the date. |

2nd Annual Customer Appreciation Day
BIGGER and BETTER Than EVER!
We broke all kinds of records last year and are hoping to better it this year.

Mark your calendar for our 2nd annual Customer Appreciation Day August 10th!
Live Radio Broadcast....
With Derek Walker from K102
Once again we'll be asking our customers and friends to step up and support the Post Falls Food Bank, the Inland NW Blood Bank and Toys for Tots.
This year's Food Collection Goal is 5,000 pounds. We can do it with your help. Remember every food item or toy donated will get you one ticket for a chance at winning guns and other big prizes.
Let's show our neighbors how giving the shooting community can be. We're asking everyone to sign up in advance for the blood drive. The INW blood bank is sending two blood collection vehicles this year. This is unheard of but a direct result of the support you all provided last year. If you remember they turned people away last year. Well, not this year!! Call Deb to make your appointment. 208-773-2331.
Toys for Tots is another group that will benefit from this awesome community day. We need to rally around the awesome men and woman of the local USMC Toys for Tots effort.
Expanded area established for swap meet. The SWAP MEET Spaces are FREE. Please sign up early for your space as we are limited to the total number available. You can sell anything but firearms in your booth. Bring your own table or the tailgate of your truck, we'll provide the space. Call now to reserve your space. 208-773-2331.
We'll have lots of giveaways and once again free table space for our SWAP meet!
Once again we'll have our big blow-up target so everyone can play for free prizes. And Boomer the Bear from the Spokane Chiefs will be here for pictures and autographs for the kids.
Many Vendors will be present. PWS Firearms and Lisa Looper (inventor of the Flash Bang Holster) will be here along with many others!
We will giveaway a number of firearms and many other accessories as part of our top prize list with much more to come... |
Customer Appreciation Day = Giant Sale |

Look for never before seen prices on many in stock Glock pistols, Surefire and Streamlight Flashlights, Roma Gun Bags, Cannon Safes and much more. We are committed to making this a true customer appreciation day and setting a new standard for supporting our local community. |

ALL NEW...Tactical Pistol (2-day) August 23 & 24
You've been asking for it so we have it scheduled. It is the new version of our Tactical Pistol Class we have been working on for some time.
This is the most advanced pistol class taught anywhere in the region. This is a two day class that requires students to conduct live fire exercises as well as Use of Force scenarios held in our tactical bay using our new modular walls and halls system.
This modular system allows us to create hallways and doorways along with corners that must be negotiated by the students. Each student will participate in at least 6 scripted exercises that may require any level of response from less lethal to deadly force.
Tactical Pistol
Def HG 1 re-takes only (weekday evening) Aug 7
5-8pm
If you have completed Defensive HG 1 then don't miss this re-take only class. This new re-take only format is proving to be very successful and in high demand. The students love it, but I have to be honest...so do I. It is such a treat to have this format where we concentrate on the shooting. The classroom time is limited to less than 30 minutes with the balance of the class spent in live fire mode on the range. You can only sign up for this class by calling the range and getting on the list. 208-773-2331.
Also scheduled July 21 from 8-11am.
Cane Defense August 30 - 1pm
Practical cane defense is back and August 30th is a great opportunity to experience the virtues of a cane for self defense. This is an awesome tool of defense that is allowed in any non-permissive environment.
Advanced Carbine at Fernan Rod and Gun Club Outdoor Range Offered One More Time this Summer!
Don't miss the most comprehensive Carbine class offered in the Northwest. We will offer this advanced program one more time this summer on August 17th at Fernan Rod and Gun Club Outdoor range. We are blessed to have such an awesome facility available to us here in North Idaho.
This class is less than 1 hr of classroom and approximately 7 hrs of shooting on the range. We will pick up where we left off at the end of Basic Carbine and move into a comprehensive format covering carbine and also handgun transitions.
Please make sure you check out the list of required equipment prior to registering for this class.
Note: We're offering the pre-requisite Basic Carbine class in July and August.
Advanced Carbine Basic Carbine
5 day Comprehensive HG in July
It is that time again. For all of you that are wanting to improve your HG shooting skills, this is the class. This class is 5 days of intense shooting and learning. It is the most comprehensive class of this type taught anywhere in the USA.
We only charge a fraction of what the "big named" schools charge and we even let you repeat our course forever for free. The emphasis of this class is to make every student a better shooter. Regardless where you start on day one, by day 5 you will be better. I guarantee it!
July 15-19
5-day Comprehensive Handgun
Hunting Sim Class Is back in time for the Season!
Offered twice in August...the 6th and 14th...5:30-7:30pm
Due to the popularity of last year's Hunter Simulation program we are again offering our laser simulation hunter program. This is a great opportunity to test your skills and verify all your hunting ethics and safe hunting practices. Parents, what better way to test your young hunters ability to assess the shot and demonstrate their firearm and hunting skills. This class does NOT replace hunter safety classes offered by the State.
The class is limited to participants 10 years and older. This is a very realistic system and participants under 10 years old just don't benefit from the class and often view the process as more of a video game. We want to make sure we maintain a true learning environment with this program.
We experienced a lot of no-shows last year when the program was free. So this year we have decided to charge a nominal fee of $10.00. I guess it is that old saying of it's free it can't be worth much and showing up after signing up is no real priority.

Gun Locks Needed!
We are always looking for gun locks. We provide a gunlock with every firearm sold. If we purchase a used gun or sell a consignment gun we must ensure a lock is provided. In an effort to keep the firearm cost as low as possible we try to use donated locks to fill the need. When donated locks are not available we must charge the consignee for a lock.
If you have any gun locks that are not being used please bring them in and help out our fellow shooters.
****Thank you to all of you who brought in locks this last month...you're all amazing!

Monthly Training Tip
Intimidation a Tool of the Criminal...
It is an accepted belief that the crime of rape is actually an "act of aggression and violence, motivated primarily by power or anger, rather than by sexuality."
We are now beginning to recognize that most street crimes are also driven by the pursuit of power. All of us seek power in one form or another. The problem is, power can be used responsibly or irresponsibly. Criminals crave power and will do virtually anything to get it. They believe other people and their property exists for their benefit. The guy who today sticks a knife in your face and demands money is the same guy that stole your milk, or lunch money back in grade school. Most crimes of violence are crimes of opportunity. I want you to limit those opportunities.
The Criminal's toolbox.
The criminal's tools are deception and intimidation. He will often use deception to catch people off guard. His secrecy gives him a great advantage and provides him a sense of power. Intimidation is another often used weapon by the criminal. His domineering manner may be so menacing that he need never utter a threat, raise his voice, or clench his fist. Other times, a display of anger accomplishes his purpose. The outburst is usually carefully orchestrated, expertly timed and displayed dramatically.
The criminal wants to dominate his victim and will often resort to violence as a last resort. His self-image is at stake. He expects you to comply with his commands. So, he gives you an order (give me your wallet) and he expects and waits for you to comply. If he wanted to hurt you, he would simply walk up to you and attack you without warning. But this is typically not what happens.
Raise Your Level of Awareness!
I believe that raising your level of awareness is the single most effective way to keep yourself and those around you safe. Col. Jeff Cooper developed the Combat Mind set Color Code System. Although others have added colors and applied additional theories to Col. Cooper's original 4 color format, I believe in keeping it simple. If four colors were good enough for Cooper, they are good enough for me. Take a second to note the colors and associated mind set listed below.
- White - Unaware and unprepared
- Yellow - Relaxed alert. No specific threat situation
- Orange - Specific alert. Something is not quite right and has gotten your attention
- Red - Fight Mode. Your mental trigger has been tripped (established back in Condition Orange). You take appropriate action.
Ideally, you should go about your day in Condition Yellow. Being alert gives you the edge. As we have said time after time, "Action beats Reaction every time". I don't care how fast you are with whatever weapon system you choose. If your first indication you are in trouble is the contact with the criminal on his terms, you have an uphill battle ahead.
As much as we talk about awareness as described by Col Cooper's system, we need to refine our awareness to specifics. What I mean is that we must look for anomalies, the things that don't look right or seem out of place. In addition, we need to constantly be aware of potential weapons of opportunity, or places of safety or at least advantage.
When you observe criminal behavior or a perceived threat, get away if you can. If that doesn't work and you are victimized, a plan of action and speed in execution may be your salvation. When he says "This is a stick up" he must wait for you to comply. It is during this critical time that you must act. If you are going to run, run. If you are willing and able to fight, fight and WIN....
Remember....Be Safe...
