A Few Thoughts from Ed...

I guess it is safe to say that summer is here. I am excited to finally be home for a while after the most traveled first half of the year I have ever had. The travel gets old no matter how much you love what you are doing. I am sure it won't be long before Peggy says "don't you have a trip coming up".

Of course the benefit of being home for a while is that I will be able to work more closely with our team to continue to tweak and improve on who and what we are as a company. I cannot say enough about our awesome staff led every day by Deb and Ken. We are not perfect but I can honestly say we are all working towards the same goal of meeting our mantra "Better product, Better service, Better experience".

We have capitalized on the momentum generated by so many of you during our recent work day. Next time you are in stop and take a look at the photo montage in the entry area of all the volunteers working. You may have noticed the merchandise moving around the store and displays changing. This is a result of our staff taking ownership of their product sections. They are working at creating better merchandise displays and tweaking the offerings to better match your needs.

We have an unmatched offering of AR parts and accessories as well as the area's best selection of precision rifle products. Everything from Scopes, Kestrels, Mildot cards and all the related gear can be found in our facility. We are actively seeking your input to guide us in our attempt to complete our product offerings.

In addition to the retail efforts, we continue to evaluate and modify our training. I am particularly excited about our Retake Only addition to the Defensive Handgun program. We have offered three retake only classes so far and they have been received very well by the students. From my perspective, I love them. There is no classroom time and the teaching is all on the range. The coach shooter format allows for an awesome learning environment and the shooting drills progress very smoothly. Remember, this is particularly important to me as much of our training skill sets are advanced and require repetition to perfect.

I am committed to always allow our students to retake any class completed forever for free. I don't know how to better show our commitment to your training. I know that no one provides a more comprehensive and realistic training program than we do. Training is at the core of our identity. We will never compromise our training and the business end of our mission will never drive our training commitment.

Speaking of training, in the last week or so I have been called by at least 4 people who want to become firearms instructors. I ask them why do you want to be an instructor and their response to a person has been "everyone wants a CCW permit so it is a great way to make extra money". Buyer be aware. Don't get me wrong, we need all the instructors we can get throughout this great country. However, this must be kept in context. It is a quality not quantity issue for me. Everywhere I go across the country I run into instructors who are people who have read a book and then go out and teach.

Unfortunately, I see this even in the great Northwest. It takes so much more to be a quality instructor and or offer a quality training program. This leads me to all the talk about the new Enhanced Idaho CCW permit that will take effect on July 1st. To answer your many questions, we will offer the enhanced CCW class. We are not in a hurry to jump in at this time, but yes, you want the class and we will offer it.

Allow me to explain why we are not already offering the class. The main reason for our cautious approach is that the permit will NOT automatically allow Idahoans to carry in more States. In fact for quite some time to come, anyone with a standard Idaho permit and a Utah permit will be allowed to carry in many more States than with just the Idaho Enhanced permit. I do believe that ultimately if the multi-tier permit is administered correctly we may gain wider acceptance with other States but how many years will that take? There is a reason States have avoided the multi-level permit. It is difficult at every level to administer.

Trust me, if our motivation was to get into your pocketbook we would have ½ page ads in every paper "come to CTS and get the New Enhanced Permit training from us". Until the Enhanced permit has a significant benefit to you our customers we are not in any hurry to jump on the bandwagon.

Remember over 8 years ago we were the first trainers in the greater CDA and Spokane area to offer you the UTAH class. Others in the area laughed at us for offering a comprehensive Utah CCW class. Now every one of them that is still in business is offering the class. I just want to say thank you to the over 10,000 students that have taken the class and rest assured we have your back and when it makes sense to offer the Enhanced course we will.

Notes from Peggy:

If you're coming to Center Target for a class or seminar and need a place to stay we have negotiated special rates at the Holiday Inn Express-Coeur d'Alene. Just give them our name when you call. 208-667-3100.

We have finally come in to the 21st century.  Center Target now has a Facebook page.  We're asking everyone on Facebook to please "like us" and I'm open for any help or suggestions.

Every month we remind you that Center Target Sports continues to be a collection point for used cell phones and toiletries for the Post Falls Women's shelter (OASIS). A special thank you for the generous donation of toilet paper and the trunk full of donations from US Bank. Our customers are the best! If you're traveling and have checked luggage, collect all those unused bottles in your hotel bathroom and bring them back for us to donate to OASIS.  Every little bit helps.  Thank you. CTS is the ONLY one collecting for the Shelter and I'm proud to be making monthly deliveries.

Counter Blade Concepts Seminar

You Have seen him on TV - Now Train With Him!

Janich In this two-day seminar, Michael Janich will present detailed instruction in his Counter-Blade Concepts (CBC) system of empty-hand defenses against edged-weapon attacks. This street-proven system begins by defining the threat with a detailed video analysis of actual knife attacks. It then presents a progressive series of skills designed to significantly enhance your survivability against both ballistic and static knife attacks. The CBC system functions as both a stand-alone unarmed skill set and as a critically important complement to weapon-based personal-defense.

This seminar will include step-by-step instruction in the critical skills of the CBC system and methods of integrating them into contact-distance shooting tactics. It will also address the use of CBC against other weapon threats, including firearms and impact weapons, and its use as a foundation for knife tactics. Students should bring purpose-designed training knives, eye protection, and a blue gun, airsoft, or other inert training pistol with holster.

The price for this class is $300 and is non-refundable.  This class does not fall under the "forever for free" policy at CTS.

Finally the Flash Bang Holsters are Here!

The Flashbang bra holster is a black, molded plastic holder that includes three different size straps that button over the middle of your bra strap, technically called the "gore" which connects the two cups. The holster straps are made of soft leather and each strap has different holes, much like on a belt, so you can adjust the length of each strap. The straps connect to the holster by a screw, but once you get the correct size strap on, you should not have to change it out. The majority of "gores" are the same size, so once you have it fit-which only takes a few minutes-you should be good to go with a variety of bras.

You put the leather strap over the gore and then snap the leather strap into place. For a right-handed shooter, the holster sits just under the left side. (Girls, envision the pencil test, but with just the tip of the long part of the pencil.) The gun's barrel points directly to the left side of your body. The grip lays flat against your chest.

Come in and see for yourself what all the excitement is about.

The Mildot Master®

The Mildot Master Is an analog calculator designed along the principle of a slide rule, utilizing logarithmic and inverse logarithmic scales developed specifically for performing the following operations:

  • Rapid and simple calculation of range to target, based on a measurement of the target with a Mildot reticle, by aligning the estimated target size directly opposite the Mildot measurement, and then reading the range at an index mark.
  • Rapid and simple calculation of the amount of sight correction necessary to compensate for bullet drop and/or wind drift for a given range, enabling the shooter to determine either the equivalent telescopic sight adjustment (minute-of-angle, or MOA) or the equivalent hold-over (mils), by reading equivalents in both MOA and mils directly opposite the bullet drop/wind drift figure.
  • Additionally, angle of fire for uphill or downhill shots can be accurately measured, and the up/down compensation can be closely calculated to reduce the errors such shots can induce

mildot

The Mildot reticle is in increasingly widespread use among long-range rifle shooters as a means of estimating the range to the target. This estimation is critical in order to correct for the varying degree of projectile drop (and/or wind drift) at different ranges and thereby enable the shooter to hit the target. With training and familiarization, an experienced marksman can accurately estimate range to target by using this type of reticle and by making the appropriate calculations. Originally fitted to telescopic sights designed for military (and later police) use, the Mildot reticle has seen growing acceptance in the civilian sector among target shooters and hunters.

By using a set of fixed references within the scope, the shooter can compare the size of the target, a portion of the target, or a nearby reference target to a series of precisely sized dots and spacing. By estimating the size of the target or nearby reference and noting the number of mils that equal the size of the target, the shooter can determine the range to the target by applying a formula (size of target in yards multiplied by 1000, divided by size of target in mils, equals range to target in yards), usually done with the help of a conventional hand held electronic calculator.

Our Newest Instructor
I am so very proud to introduce to you our newest instructor Dennis Mader.  I know, I know, Dennis is not new to CTS as he has been a very valued member of our team for over a year.  Likewise he is no stranger to the firearms teaching profession.  He brings to our teaching cadre many years of dennisinstruction.

I am so particular about our courses and how they are taught and received by our students that adding instructors to the team is a very serious matter.  With the same confidence I had when Ken took a huge load off my shoulders a few years ago, I also believe that Dennis will now serve the same role for both Ken and I.

From the comments I have already received from those of you who have been taught by Dennis...he is already well on his way to an impressive teaching career with CTS.

Gun Locks Needed!

gun lock We are always looking for gun locks.  We provide a gunlock with every firearm sold.  If we purchase a used gun or sell a consignment gun we must ensure a lock is provided.  In an effort to keep the firearm cost as low as possible we try to use donated locks to fill the need.  When donated locks are not available we must charge the consignee for a lock.

If you have any gun locks that are not being used please bring them in and help out our fellow shooters.

****Thank you to all of you who brought in locks this last month...you're all amazing!

Monthly Training Tip

Winning in Low-Light takes more than Fancy Toys...

Recently there seems to be more and more written, discussed, and even advertised about working under low-light conditions.  Maybe I am just more sensitive to these issues as this is a subject that I am passionate about and compelled to learn more about.  Through research, experimentation, and clinical study I am constantly looking for answers.

My purpose in this article pertains to how I believe you can immediately impact your low-light survivability. Sadly, many firearms instructors spend most of their time teaching the popular flashlight techniques that have been around forever.  That's OK to a point.   Flashlight techniques are important and they need to be understood.  However, there is more to operating in the night than knowing how to hold a flashlight.

Develop an Understanding

I believe you need to develop greater understanding of the physiological and psychological aspects you will encounter while under stress in the dark.  A comprehensive understanding of these factors will allow you to select and train in the techniques that work for your particular environment and personal limitations or capabilities.  You need to understand that these are factors that affect everyone who operates in a low-light environment good guys and bad guys alike.  Developing the knowledge, tools, tactics, and techniques to "Rule the Night" and not merely exist in it could save your life.

A great place to start to improve your low-light survivability is by studying the Human Eye Physiology, Affects of Body Alarm Response (BAR) in the dark, and the low-light skills of Visual Patience, and don't overlook the importance of using  your Light Source as a Control Device.

Physiology

At a minimum, learn the function of the Rods and Cones.  Understand how the Cones during day time, provide us with color and detail.  In the dark the Rods take over and allow us to see movement rather than fine detail.  Knowing where the Rods and Cones are located will reinforce why off-center viewing is so critical at night. Did you know that the amount of light we need to see at night doubles every 13 years?

Psychological

We need to understand that in reduced light, our mind will try to fill in what our eyes can't see.  This becomes even more difficult to manage under stressful conditions.  We have all heard instructors talk about Fight or Flight Response.  Lately we are hearing the term Body Alarm Response (BAR) in the place of Flight or Flight.  The BAR is the body's response to the high stress of a life threatening attack situation.  Add the psychological & physiological changes that are magnified by the lack of light and the Low-Light BAR can be the most severe you will ever experience.

"Tunnel Vision" or "Perceptual Narrowing" can be explained by the physiological and psychological changes that accompany the BAR.  As humans we have an innate tendency to narrow attention upon a threat during extreme stress.

Visual Patience

Visual patience is a term I use to describe the act of leaving your light on long enough to identify what you are looking at.  Emotions of the fight and visual patience are often mixed or confused when we attempt to analyze the high stress environment of a gun fight.

Control with Light

I believe here is where you can tremendously improve your ability to win at night.  You should learn to use light to control the bad guy.  How do you use light as a force option?  I bet I've got you wondering now.  Place the hot spot of your light in your opponent's eyes, you reduce his ability to see you clearly and mount any type of attack as you approach.  He is unable to assess your physical conditioning, your size, determine if you are alone, look for an escape route, or look for cover, just to mention a few advantages.

If you have a quality light source, and you know how to use it, you can gain the advantages as stated above every time you confront a suspect in a diminished light environment.

I believe the single most important thing you can do to improve your survivability is to improve your understanding operating in the low-light environment.  Never before, have we had the tools, access to the knowledge and clinical research available to us to truly "Rule the Night".
