Welcome back to the Target Zone:

 _____________________

Welcome back to the Target Zone. It sure is good to be home for a few weeks.

They say that the season of spring brings change and this issue as well as Center Target Sports is full of change. The first change came as a surprise but we survived. Stephanie who has been our manager for the last 4 years resigned to pursue the corporate life. We are all very appreciative of all she has done for us as manager and we wish her all the best in her new career.

debWe are very excited to introduce Debbie Behary as our new manager. Deb has been a key member of our staff for almost two years. She knows most of you and she shares our vision for CTS. In the short time that she has been at the helm I can already feel the energy and conviction in all she does. I am particularly proud of our entire staff as they have embraced this unexpected change and have not missed a beat throughout this period of transition.

Now as I said earlier Spring equals change so you might imagine I am not finished. This week we added 3 new team members to our staff. Please see their introductions below. Please take the time to introduce yourself the next time you are in and we would also like to solicit your patience as they begin the training phase of their employment.

One change that could not come fast enough is the availability of ammo and firearms. We are finally getting a little of both. This week we received the first 22LR ammo in 6 months. It came in bulk and we have broken it down and packaged it into 50 rd baggies. The centerfire ammo is starting to trickle in as well. We are committed to always have ammo for our classes.   This week I was able to purchase the last 140 boxes of 308 Match Ammo in the country. So yes, we will have ammo for this summer's Scoped Precision Rifle course out at Fernan Rod and Gun Club.

I also picked up 37,000 rds of bulk 223 ammo in 1000 rd ammo cans. It has shipped and will be here soon. We will offer this ammo on a Saturday morning to members only from 9am to noon and to the public from noon until it's gone. It will be sold by the can and it will be minimally marked up so that we can offer it at the lowest price possible. It will not be inexpensive, but it will be less than on the Internet.  We'll send out a special email blast when we set the date.

Firearms are starting to show up on a regular basis. We are now receiving PWS AR's on a regular basis and we have them in stock. In addition we have some level entry AR's and a good selection of Glocks and other handguns in stock.

Keeping with the theme of change and speaking of the Scoped Precision Rifle class, yes it is our newest change to our class offerings. We are very excited to finally answer your many requests for a precision rifle curriculum that will cover the many aspects of shooting ethically, accurately and safely at distance. See the course write up below.

I am very happy and humbled to report that the debut of my new book "Low-Light Combatives" was very successful in Chicago last month. The book is available at the store, online at our website or at amazon.com.

Machine Guns

Our machine guns are giving us fits.  We lost one to a complete breakdown which means it needs to go back to the manufacturer for parts and one needs to return to the factory for their expert diagnosis.

Problem is we can not return these guns for repair without paperwork from the Feds.  The paperwork can take up to 6 months.  We are doing everything possible to get these guns up and running and we are also looking to purchase another gun so we will have 4 guns to help provide the ultimate machine gun experience.

As of today we have one MP5 Operational!  Thank you for your patience as we work through these issues.

Mark your calendar for our 2nd annual Customer Appreciation Day August 10th!  Once again we'll be asking our customers and friends to step up and support the Post Falls Food Bank, the Inland NW Blood Bank and Toys for Tots.  We broke all kinds of records last year and are hoping to better it this year. Let's show once again how giving our gun community is.  We'll have lots of giveaways and once again free table space for our SWAP meet....more info to come in future newsletters!

It will cost you nothing to bring it in and get an idea on what value your firearm has.  Just see Cam, Gio, Ken or Ed.

A Note from Peggy:

Every month we remind you that Center Target Sports continues to be a collection point for used cell phones and toiletries for the Post Falls Women's shelter (OASIS). I just want to say thank you for the incredible outpouring of generous donations for this worthy cause.  The number of toiletries, phones, hats, PJ's, robes, slippers and toiletry bags has been overwhelming. Our customers are the best! If you're traveling and have checked luggage, collect all those unused bottles in your hotel bathroom and bring them back for us to donate to OASIS.  Every little bit helps.  Thank you. CTS is the ONLY one collecting for the Shelter and I'm proud to be making monthly deliveries.

A special thank you to L and T for also continuing to generously donate money each month to OASIS for continuing safety training for those in need.

  Gun Locks Needed!

gun lockWe are always looking for gun locks.  We provide a gunlock with every firearm sold.  If we purchase a used gun or sell a consignment gun we must ensure a lock is provided.  In an effort to keep the firearm cost as low as possible we try to use donated locks to fill the need.  When donated locks are not available we must charge the consignee for a lock.

If you have any gun locks that are not being used please bring them in and help out our fellow shooters.

  closet vault

We are always looking for unique secure storage solutions that are made with quality materials and craftsmanship. We have always carried V-Line products but we have recently discovered two built-in solutions that we are now stocking. The Closet Vault and the Quick Vault. Learn more below.

The Closet Vault fits between the wall studs (16" on center 2x4's). The Closet Vault provides a unique and space conscious way to secure and store firearms and/or valuables such as laptops, jewelry, and other items with the convenience of quick access. The door and frame protrude less than 2 inches from the wall, allowing it to be concealed behind a door or in a closet.

The Closet Vault has a variety of options that can be added to the safe, including a peg board door panel, pistol rack, a full shelf and a half shelf. The Closet Vault has a high security user-friendly mechanical lock capable of setting one of 1,081 different combinations. Since this lock is mechanical, there are no batteries to replace. Two tubular key locks have been added to the top and bottom for additional security when quick access is not required.

 quick vault

V-Line's Quick Vault is the perfect "Hiding Place" to secure small valuables and firearms without compromising quick and easy access, or interfering with room decor.

The Quick Vault is designed to install in between the wall studs and mounts flush with the wall's surface. Hang a picture over the Quick Vault for complete concealment. The attached bezel or frame gives a clean finished look, hiding any uneven drywall cuts.

The door of the Quick Vault is inset for both flush installation as well as maximum security. An inner steel frame gives added protection to the door guarding against prying attacks. The five push button mechanical lock offers quick and easy access with no batteries to fail or keys that can fall into the wrong hands. The combination is easy to set and change, with 1081 possible codes.

Felt lining on the walls and back cushion contents. An adjustable felt lined shelf provides additional storage space. The Quick Vault is large enough to comfortably hold hand guns, wallets, jewelry, and small valuables.

With a Tactical Pistol class on the horizon...now is the time to get the pre-requisites out of the way. We have been offering a number of DEF HG I classes so students will be ready for Defensive HG II which is scheduled on April 27th.

This is an 8 hour course limited to 10 students. The primary goal of this course is to develop the defensive handgun and personal skills necessary to not only survive but control a lethal encounter. This course builds on the skills and theories presented in Defensive HG I (CTS-201). Students will learn and practice the skills and attitude essential to surviving a lethal threat or confrontation.

The course will include both classroom presentations and live fire range exercises. A combination of Dry Practice and Live Fire with Real World Scenarios including multiple threats, low light shooting, hostage rescue, wounded shooter drills, equipment malfunctions, and moving targets.

CCW gunDef HG I

Retakes-only June 16

The RETAKE Only class has proven so successful that we are going to offer it regularly.  I was very impressed with the students who have taken the retake only class.

I am excited about the level of instruction I am able to offer in this new class format.  Students wanting more trigger time would be much better off taking the retake only class rather than repeating the def HG 1 class in its entirety.

The retake only class has only 20 min classroom and all the rest of the class is dedicated to live fire with one on one coaching.  Don't miss this FREE retake only class! You must call the range to sign up for the class...it is not on the website.  208-773-2331.

5 day Comprehensive HG in July

It is that time again.  For all of you that are wanting to improve your HG shooting skills this is the class.  The class is 5 days of intense shooting and learning.  This class is the most comprehensive class of this type taught anywhere in the USA.firing line

We only charge a fraction of what the "big named" schools charge and we even let you repeat our course forever for free.  The emphasis of this class is to make every student a better shooter. Regardless where you start on day one, by day 5 you will be better.  I guarantee it!

Watch for the July calendar for the dates.

Guest Instructors Coming Back to CTS!!

By now you know how serious we take our training. Their are only two instructors that I have ever allowed to teach in our facility. This year we have both of these professionals here doing what they do best. I truly believe that Michael Janich and John Farnam are the best in the world at what they do. Don't miss this opportunity to experience the "Best of the Best"!

A real treat this year for all the Mike Janich fans...He has agreed to teach Counter-Blade concepts.  This is the ultimate in Defense against the knife.  Do not miss this class.  It is the first time he is teaching it here in the Northwest!

Michael Janich is back June 29-30

Counter-Blade Concepts Seminar

JanichIn this two-day seminar, Michael Janich will present detailed instruction in his Counter-Blade Concepts (CBC) system of empty-hand defenses against edged-weapon attacks. This street-proven system begins by defining the threat with a detailed video analysis of actual knife attacks. It then presents a progressive series of skills designed to significantly enhance your survivability against both ballistic and static knife attacks. The CBC system functions as both a stand-alone unarmed skill set and as a critically important complement to weapon-based personal-defense.

This seminar will include step-by-step instruction in the critical skills of the CBC system and methods of integrating them into contact-distance shooting tactics. It will also address the use of CBC against other weapon threats, including firearms and impact weapons, and its use as a foundation for knife tactics. Students should bring purpose-designed training knives, eye protection, and a blue gun, airsoft, or other inert training pistol with holster.

The price for this class is $300 and is non-refundable.  This class does not fall under the "forever for free" policy at CTS.

Counter Blade Concepts

John Farnam is coming back Aug 2-4

Defensive Hand Gun

Learn from the Master.  John is a no nonsense guy and that is the message you get when you take a defensive handgun class from him.  Most people never get the opportunity to take a John Farnam class without traveling great distances and incurring all the associated expenses of such travel and lodging.  Take this class offered in your backyard!

I want to explain about the Farnam class and the fact that you make payment check out directly to John and why we can't take a credit card for his class.  Simply put we don't make a penny on a John Farnam class.  To keep the cost to a minimum we do not mark up his fees.

We offer the cost for two primary reasons.  Number 1, we want you exposed to the best available training.  No 2, Once exposed to his training, you will understand just how good our own inhouse instructor really are.

  john farnam

The DTI Defensive Handgun Course is designed to prepare the responsible, adult gun owner to handle, maintain, safely store, and use their firearm safely, responsibly, correctly, and effectively, so that they are able to successfully handle nearly any personal protection situation.

An increasing number of people are seeking to improve their defensive shooting skills and expand their knowledge about the use of firearms for personal protection.

Here in the United States, many states are currently expanding access to concealed carry permits. DTI classes offer permit holders and those who are considering applying for a permit an opportunity to learn how to properly and safely carry a concealed handgun and to understand the laws regarding the use of lethal force for personal protection.

The course will consist of classroom lecture/demonstration and live-fire exercises on the range.

Classroom instruction includes:

  • Situation Awareness
  • Threat Evaluation
  • The Force Continuum
  • Courtroom Savvy
  • The Physio/Psychological Aspects of Lethal Encounters.

Live-fire exercises on the range include:

  • Threat evaluation
  • Risk identification and reduction
  • Lethal threat containment and management
  • Precision shooting
  • Discretionary shooting
  • Low-light shooting (with and without a flashlight)
  • Cover and movement
  • Performing under stress

Tactical training is conducted in a realistic manner, stressing correct use of cover, movement, challenges, and other important individual tactics. In addition, students will practice close and extremely close encounters and weapon control.

The price for this class is $625 and is non-refundable.  This class does not fall under the "forever for free" policy at CTS.  Tuition can be paid by cash or check only with checks being made out to John Farnam.

THANK YOU Volunteers!!!!

They say "Nobody loves your business like you do"   They are wrong...and our volunteers proved it!

23 of you showed up to pitch in and help us get more work done in one day than we could have ever hoped for.

We close one day a year for a full day of spring cleaning, painting, construction, landscaping  ... you get the idea.  In the past, a number of you said you would have helped out if you'd have known about our plan.  This year I mentioned it in our last newsletter and OMG, what a turnout.  I have been involved in many "work day events" with civic groups, nonprofits, etc... and we struggle to get anyone to show up.  I honestly hoped for 4 or 5 volunteers for our workday at CTS.

23, are you kidding me!  Never in my wildest dreams.  We had a plumber and a contractor who came with all their tools and worked all day.  We had paint crews, landscapers, window washers, carpet cleaners, and everything else you can imagine.

Peggy and I were so very humbled that so many of you showed up!  We could never thank you enough for the unselfish donation of your many talents, skills, and fellowship.  We all had a great time and the facility has never looked better.

We have created a montage of all the pictures taken during the work day.  This montage will be framed and hung in the entry way of our facility so all will know of your efforts and the family oriented fellowship we all shared on Workday 2013.

Thank You!  Thank You!   Thank You!

Monthly Tip!

Criminals Use Intimidation

It is an accepted belief that the crime of rape is actually an "act of aggression and violence, motivated primarily by power or anger, rather than by sexuality."

We are now beginning to recognize that most street crimes are also driven by the pursuit of power. All of us seek power in one form or another. The problem is, power can be used responsibly or irresponsibly. Criminals crave power and will do virtually anything to have it. They believe other people and their property exists for their benefit. The guy who today sticks a knife in your face and demands money is the same guy that stole your milk, or lunch money back in grade school. Most crimes of violence are crimes of opportunity. I want you to limit those opportunities.

Criminal's use weapons of many forms.

He will often use deception to catch people off guard. His secrecy gives him a great advantage and provides him a sense of power. Intimidation is another often used weapon by the criminal. His domineering manner may be so menacing that he need never utter a threat, raise his voice, or clench his fist. Other times, a display of anger accomplishes his purpose. The outburst is usually carefully orchestrated, expertly timed and displayed dramatically.
The criminal wants to dominate his victim and will often resort to violence as a last resort. His self-image is at stake. He expects you to comply with his commands. So, he gives you an order (give me your wallet) and he expects and waits for you to comply. If he wanted to hurt you, he would simply walk up to you and attack you without warning. But this is typically not what happens.

Raise Your Level of Awareness!

I believe that raising your level of awareness is the single most effective way to keep yourself and those around you safe. Col. Jeff Cooper developed the Combat Mind set Color Code System. Although others have added colors and applied additional theories to Col. Cooper's original 4 color format, I believe in keeping it simple. If four colors were good enough for Cooper, they are good enough for me. Take a second to note the colors and associated mind set listed below.
  • White - Unaware and unprepared
  • Yellow - Relaxed alert. No specific threat situation
  • Orange - Specific alert. Something is not quite right and has gotten your attention
  • Red - Fight Mode. Your mental trigger has been tripped (established back in Condition Orange). You take appropriate action.

Ideally, you should go about your day in Condition Yellow. Being alert gives you the edge. As we have said time after time, "Action beats Reaction every time". I don't care how fast you are with whatever weapon system you choose. If your first indication you are in trouble is the contact with the criminal on his terms, you have an uphill battle ahead.

Learn and train yourself to trust your instincts.

If it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. Don't blow it off. A recent student of mine and his girlfriend were confronted by 3 knife wielding would be robbers in Spokane Valley last month. As he explained the incident to Peggy and I, he credited his heightened state of awareness that allowed him to get his semiautomatic CCW out of the holster and into the situation without having to fire a shot, directly attributed to the class he took at Center Target. His ability to recognize the situation they were in kept them from being robbed or worse.

When you observe criminal behavior or a perceived threat, get away if you can. If that doesn't work and you are victimized, a plan of action and speed in execution may be your salvation. When he says "This is a stick up" he must wait for you to comply. It is during this critical time that you must act. If you are going to run, run. If you are willing and able to fight, fight and WIN....
