8th anniv

Can you believe December 4th will be our 8th Anniversary!

Peggy and I along with the best staff in the industry are very appreciative and thankful for all your support.  On Tuesday we celebrate 8 years in business.  We will have some rock bottom specials on limited high demand items.  We will also have cake to share with all customers on Tuesday.  Come in to save a ton or just enjoy a piece of cake with our team.

I believe your support of what we are trying to do here at CTS is the reason we have been so successful.  As I look over the new member or range use waivers the most often expressed answer to "How did you hear about us?" "is Word of Mouth"!   This is so important to our existence and continued growth.  We take our training very seriously and those of you that have experienced our classes know this to be true.  Thank you for spreading the word.

This Christmas season, please take the time to recommend our training programs to your friends.  You have our commitment that they will soon see that there is no place in the Northwest that can provide the level of training they get from the CTS staff.  Don't forget to tell them that they can even repeat our classes forever for FREE.

All of us at Center Target Sports wish all of you and yours have a healthy, happy and wonderful holiday season.

Let's talk "Replacement Parts"... We have 2 staff members with new parts this month and they are both doing well.  Both Peggy and Ken have new hips and are recouping and getting better every day.  Forgive their slowness and limping for a while as they'll be back to normal soon.

*****************************

A reminder that our Glock rep (Kyle Hopp) will be at CTS on December 15th in support of our GSSF match. Mark your calendars as you don't want to miss the opportunity to have this master Glock armor work on you gun for FREE!   We like FREE!

A new IDPA group joins the CTS family. The Spokane IDPA group has asked if we would support their program during the winter months...Of course we said yes. They will be shooting here on the 4th Sunday of each month. The only exception will be January when they will shoot on the 3rd Sunday.

Our patrons will now have the opportunity to shoot IDPA 3 Sundays each month. They will be in and out of the facility on the same schedule you all are accustomed to. The majority of the time they are shooting before open to the public.  7am-11am.  $10 to participate.

Help me welcome them to the facility. Stop by and say hi or better yet shoot their course and have a great time.

We Buy Used Guns and will be happy to sell your gun on consignment for you.  We try to keep a large selection of used guns on hand, but we are selling new and used guns as fast we can get them in.  So the time has never been better for you to get cash out of that firearm that is just collecting dust.

It will cost you nothing to bring it in and get an idea on what value your firearm has.  Just see Cam or Ken or Ed.

Center Target Sports continues to be a collection point for used cell phones and toiletries for the Post Falls Women's shelter (OASIS).  Just bring in and leave with Peggy.  They will also accept PJ's, robes, slippers and toiletry bags.  If you're traveling and have checked luggage, collect all those unused bottles in your hotel bathroom and bring them back for us to donate to OASIS.  Every little bit helps.  Thank you.

**Wow, what an outpouring of giving...Thank you to all of you who have been bringing in toiletries and robes and hats etc.  CTS is the ONLY one collecting for the Shelter and I'm proud to be making monthly deliveries...Peggy

Can You Say Tuff-Writer pens?tuff writer

We are so proud to offer our customers the best defensive pens made in the world.  I recently attended a Michael Janich martial blade camp with the founder of Tuff-Writer Jack Roman.  Jack and I hit it off and we now have the exclusive Tuff-Writer dealership for our region.

You may ask, "Why do I need a Defensive Pen?" It is a dangerous world out there and the price of being unprepared is just too high. With the growth of non-permissive environments (places where guns, knives, pepper-sprays and sharp sticks are prohibited) people's options for personal defense tools are becoming more limited all the time. Tactical flashlights and defense pens are multi-use tools which can and should be carried at all times. Their multi-use nature limits restrictions as well as excuses for not having them when you need them most.

The Tuff-Writer pen is designed to be as reliable and durable as the people using it. A writing implement as well as a last ditch defensive tool that you can bring virtually anywhere and have with you at all times. The Tuff-Writer tactical / defense pen is an essential piece of gear for anyone who needs tools that they can depend on.

CTS is the newest Aimpoint Dealer in the Northwest.  That's right we are now an Aimpoint dealer and we have Aimpoint products in stock.  We are committed to building the largest selection of quality AR products and accessories possible.

A hard-anodized 30mm tube was utilized, enclosing a high efficiency circuit that allows the sight to be turned on and left on for up to three years using a single battery.

The front lens utilizes a unique band-pass coating, which allows the sight to be used with all generations of night vision devices. The modular QRP2 mount includes a removable spacer that indexes the sight at the optimal height for co-witness with the standard iron sights on AR15/M16/M4 Carbine style weapons. This spacer can be removed to enable the use of the sight on police shotguns or sub-machine guns. The QRP2 mount also incorporates a torque-limiting twist knob that provides the optimal level of pressure on the rail while completely eliminating the possibility of over-tightening. Both the front and rear lenses are recessed within the sight body to provide protection against impact damage, scratches, and fingerprints.T1

Flip covers are included to further protect the lenses, and a transparent rear lens cover is utilized allowing the user to engage a target with the lens covers closed in an emergency situation. A two Minute of Angle (2 MOA) red dot is utilized to allow maximum accuracy at all distances and under all environmental conditions.

Mini baton & stuck case remover -NOW IN STOCK

I have redesigned the Mini-baton and have had 100 made at a local machine shop. They are made of aluminum and will last a lifetime. These devices are perfect for removing a stuck case from your chamber.  They will also keep you in the fight if you break an extractor.  Yes, you will be down to a single shot pistol but that is better than nothing.

Of course they will be capable of removing a stuck case in any handgun caliber 380 and above.

Thank you for all the great comments with regard to our new gunsmith services. Your response to our expanded services and increased availability / access of our gunsmiths has truly been overwhelming. We are committed to expanding and improving our Gunsmithing program to better serve your needs.

Looking over our recent work orders I am seeing that our turnaround time has been drastically reduced.  Most orders are completed within 24-48 hours.  The only work orders that have taken longer are those requiring special parts or machine work.

Many of you know Gio has a college degree in Gunsmithing and brings a lot of experience to our facility. As a former Master AR gunsmith for an AR Manufacturer, he brings AR gun building to a whole new level. Look for our custom made precision Center Target AR's to hit the retail floor soon.

December Free Clinic...Holiday Safety

December 3rd... 6PM

Shopping safety, travel safety, home safety, personal safety

The holiday season is ongoing and we often get very involved in this festive time thinking of decorations, gifts and enjoying our friends and family. However, the very things that make the holidays so special often heighten our potential for danger. Many of us will be traveling out of the area to visit family or at the very least increase our shopping and mall visiting.

This clinic will cover a variety of issues and tips to help you have a safe holiday season.

January Free Clinic...Sub-compact and pocket carry handguns
subcompact

January 14th ...6PM

Pocket carry... Sub-Compact... Pocket Carry...  It seems like that is all we hear across the counter.  In fact, read the blogs and that seems to be all everyone is talking about.

As an instructor, I probably have a different take on the subject than most  people talking about the issue.  I am of course concerned about safety but I so often see people shooting these subcompact or very lightweight firearms with little or no understanding of their real uniqueness.

The January FREE clinic will address all my concerns and hopefully answer all of your questions as well.

Please call the range to reserve your spot.  208-773-2331

Refuse to be a Victim- January 30

Peggy continues to generate money for the Woman's advocacy program of the Post Falls police department.  Most of you know that 100% of the $20.00 tuition we charge for this 4 hour class goes directly to the PFPD program.  Not only are we helping the community we are providing vital personal safety info that can and will benefit every participant.

I believe the single most important factor in surviving criminal attack is to have an overall safety strategy before you need it. Our Refuse To Be A Victim class taught by Peggy will teach you the personal safety tips and techniques you need to avoid dangerous situations, and avoid becoming a victim.

This is a great class for everyone, but particularly important for women and teenagers.

Here are a few of the Topic areas covered in our Refuse To Be A Victim class:

  • HOME SECURITY
  • PARENTS AND CHILDREN
  • PERSONAL SECURITY
  • PERSONAL PROTECTION DEVICES
  • AUTOMOBILE SECURITY
  • WORKPLACE SAFETY
  • TECHNOLOGICAL SECURITY
  • TRAVEL SECURITY

Monthly Tip!

This is the first of a two part Firearm Tip Section.

cln kitOwning a firearm, such as a pistol, is a lot of fun but it's also a lot of responsibility. One of those responsibilities is the proper care and maintenance of your firearm. If you want it to last, taking proper care of it is the key.

Be it rifle, shotgun, or handgun, each has it's own particular characteristics. Here, we'll talk about caring for handguns, both revolvers and pistols. Revolvers will generally need less in the way of maintenance, but will still need your TLC from time to time.

There is a difference between maintenance and cleaning. One is done to keep the gun ready on an ongoing basis, and preserve it long term (maintenance). The other is cleaning the weapon after use. Both are important, but both hold slightly different roles in the care of your firearm.

Start all firearm maintenance in a place clear of clutter, and with a flat surface. Make sure the gun is empty, remove any and all ammunition from the room. I cannot emphasize this enough. Far too many people have been hurt or injured by someone cleaning an "unloaded" gun. Before you even start doing anything to a weapon you bring into your cleaning area, clear it, check it two or three times, then recheck it. Once you know it's empty, and visually as well as physically check the chamber, you can begin.

Maintenance

Maintenance is less about keeping a pistol clean, and more about keeping it ready to go when bad things happen or just when you want to take it to the range. You may even just be making sure it stays in good shape for your kids when they inherit it. Most guns will outlast the original buyer when properly maintained, but the problem is many people forget this and leave their guns sitting in a safe, drawer, or on top of a shelf in their closet.

For external rust, old style blued guns suffer the most in this. They have less protection against the elements than say those with more modern finishes, like Melonite or Tennifer. Stainless guns, and the chrome and nickel coated guns are also very good, but they too can pick up rust spots, and these can sometimes threaten good function.

Just handling older style blued guns can deposit oils from your skin onto the surface of the firearm. Those oils alone can start to bring on rust given the right conditions. The best rule of thumb is if you take it out, rub it down with Rem-Oil or silicone cloth before you put it away. Remember if you take these guns out into the field, they will need to be wiped down as well.

Even guns with Melonite or Tennifer can get rust. Especially in areas such as after market sights, as they will not always have as robust a finish on them and rust can develop where they meet the slide surface.

Don't Forget the Inside...

After checking it on the outside, I field strip the gun every so often, and look at the innards. Sometimes rust decides to go after parts inside, rather than outside. Alloy and polymer frame guns can be notorious for this. Aluminum and plastic don't rust, but the carbon steel parts inside such as springs, sears, etc. certainly will, and are easy to forget.

All guns, whether stainless, coated, or blued will need this. Just taking the time to take it out, look it over, and wipe it down will do wonders to keep it in order. I spray into the action with Rem-Oil until it drips out the other side on all my guns that I know are going to be away for a while without being used. I have found that Rem-Oil leaves a coating that is safe for both blued steel and wood, and polymers of course, and that it doesn't attract dust or dirt.

The goal is to keep your firearm up and running for a lifetime. It's not terribly hard if you give it some periodic TLC.

Cleaning

I often run my firearm for long periods without proper cleaning. Of course I do this to test various aspects of a particular system...I DO NOT RECOMMEND YOU DO THIS! Remember, I never do this to a firearm that I might need to keep me alive when I need it to defend myself.

If you get your gun dirty, clean it. Even on a plastic pistol, most of the parts of the gun that involve firing are made of machined steel. This steel travels back and forth over other steel, and the tolerances between these two parts is machined to an exact specification, usually within a few thousands of an inch. If you get burnt powder in this space, or sand, or dust, or anything else, the stuff in there turns into sandpaper, grinding away at the working surfaces of your gun.

When you clean your handgun, whether it's a revolver or a semi auto pistol, you need to use good quality cleaners. Fortunately, there are a great abundance of good cleaners out there today. Beware that if the cleaning product you intend to use says "rust remover" on it, bluing is a slow rust process and will not survive even a dab of this cleaner.

I field strip the gun (after clearing it, of course) and clean/scrub the barrel, slide, and inside the frame. I take care to remove any carbon, lead, fouling, and whatever else is there, with a spray, brush, Q-Tip, rag, or some of the other things I will share in the tips below. Once these are cleaned I apply oil to any place I have metal to metal contact. This usually means the rails (both slide and frame), barrel, and if it has one, the barrel bushing.

Once it's all put back together I function test it. I take an EMPTY magazine and place it in the gun, and pull back the slide, and see if the slide lock works. Then, I eject the magazine, and rack the slide a few times. Once it all checks out, I'm good to go.

Revolvers, especially stainless ones, are a bear when it comes to cleaning. The lead and fouling that accumulates in rings around the face of the cylinder are a real pain to get off, and take considerable time, solvent, and elbow grease from my experience. A good solvent such as Hoppe's #9 and a bronze brush is the best tool I've found for this job. Be careful with steel brushes they can damage many types of finishes.

The cylinder face and top strap on a revolver are easy to overlook, but these are crucial areas to really get clean. If you don't use a bronze brush to scrub, scrub, scrub all of the black carbon deposits away, these will be compounded the next time you shoot your gun.

Generally I don't take either a pistol or revolver beyond the level of field stripping for a good cleaning. But outside of periodic inspection, again, I tend to spray Rem-Oil through the action and let it drip out the other side. Rem-Oil is your friend and I use it for everything.

On an auto-pistol, where you are taking the barrel out of the gun before cleaning it, clean it from the back, and use your toothbrush or other hard bristle brush on the feed ramp to get it nice and shiny. Crud can build up on it and this is a primary cause of failures to feed.

There is no mystery to cleaning barrels. If you are shooting copper jacketed bullets, check to see if there is copper fouling. If so, get some Hoppe's copper solvent and a bronze brush. If you have lead fouling from shooting lead, make sure your lead isn't too soft, and that you aren't loading the lead too hot. It is important to check this stuff right away when you shoot a new load of ammo, or a new brand. Fouling can build up, especially with lead.

More to follow next month...

Happy Holidays to you all and be safe!
