Fall 2013

Welcome to the Fall Edition of Workforce Today Magazine!

A lot has happened at NWWIB and CEP, Inc. since our Summer Edition popped up in your inbox. NWWIB and CEP, Inc. are pleased to announce we have recently received  two grant awards: Healthcare Exchange Navigator Grant, from the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, and Rescue Divas Industry Camp for Girls, from the Wisconsin Office of Rural Health.

I would be remiss if I did not mention the impact of the current government shutdown on regional workforce training programs and funding.  Obviously the NWWIB is impacted as we receive a substantial amount of federal funds for workforce development and we are watching the situation closely. NWWIB is  limited in making any expenditures or obligations for workforce training in the region until a resolution is found in D.C. and are hoping that resolution will be found sooner than later.

Please let me know if you have any questions on any of these articles or news items!

Workforce Development Month

CEP, Inc. and NWWIB  celebrated many years of excellence in workforce development services this month by hosting free employer and jobseeker workshops during September for Wisconsin's Workforce Development Month!

Brad Gingras presenting on Millennial characteristics.

Regional employers were invited to attend "Generation WHY? Strategies for Managing Younger Workers" at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center. This presentation, delivered by Brad Gingras, CEP, Inc. COO, provided employers facts and characteristics of Gen-Y, or Millennial, workforce along with tips and strategies to help you understand, motivate, and succeed with young professionals. Carrie Miller, CEP, Inc. Focused Initiatives Manager, also presented on what business services are available from CEP, Inc. and through NWWIB and the Skills Wisconsin Project.

For jobseekers, CEP, Inc. staff held a three part workshop series, the "Employment TRY-Athlon", highlighting various solutions to the challenges of a job search. "The Above & Beyond Job Search" workshop teaches jobseekers basic job searching skills, strategies, and resources.  The "Strategies to Win" workshop goes over resumes and cover letters. The "Ready, Set, Work!" workshop gives insight into interviewing "dos" and don'ts". These workshops took place a select office locations throughout the entire month.

CEP, Inc. receives grant to create Rescue Divas Industry Camp for Girls

Northwest Wisconsin Concentrated Employment Program, Inc. (CEP, Inc.) was recently awarded a grant from the Wisconsin Office of Rural Health to create Rescue Divas Industry Camp for Girls, which will introduce young women to Emergency Medical Service careers. This is a one year planning grant, which will serve as a guide for a second year implementation grant. Both nationally and locally, there is a growing shortage of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs); add in Northwest Wisconsin's steadily increasing aging population and you realize a creative solution to this problem is needed.

The Bayfield-Ashland Counties EMS Partnership, which includes Memorial Medical Center, Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College, Bayfield-Ashland EMS Council, and CEP, Inc., will coordinate on the planning of Rescue Divas Industry Camp for Girls in the Ashland/Bayfield County area. This project seeks to address the shortage of EMTs in the region by focusing recruitment efforts on a "non-traditional" demographic. Rescue Divas addresses the fact that only 30% of the nation's EMTs and paramedics are females. By providing early, exciting, and inclusive career exploration for girls, Rescue Divas aims to increase the number of women entering this career field, especially in Northwest Wisconsin.

Rescue Divas will focus on high school aged girls to promote Emergency Medicine as a career.  Rescue Divas will be a week long, residential camp for high school girls interested in exploring Emergency Medical careers. Throughout the week, girls will participate in exploratory, hands-on activities that focus on a variety of skills needed in Emergency Medical careers.  There will be off site visits to ambulance halls, police dispatch centers, firehouses, etc.  The girls will experience a wilderness rescue scenario, along with a simulated high ropes rescue.  During the week, they will earn certification in First Aid, CPR, and AED use. Additionally, they will spend a day exploring firefighting as a career, as this often goes hand-in-hand with Emergency Medicine.

For more information about Rescue Divas, please contact Carrie Miller, Project Manager, at 715-682-9141, ext. 200 or  cmiller@nwcep.org
