DVR hires New Business Services Consultants

Submitted by: Jeff Pooler, DVR - Business Services Consultant

The Wisconsin Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) is in the business of assisting job-seekers with disabilities to find and keep jobs. Through a wide variety of innovative programs and services, the Wisconsin DVR has been very successful in doing that. And now, through yet another innovation, DVR hopes to do that even more effectively.

The agency recently hired 20 new Business Services consultants, individuals who will develop relationships with Wisconsin businesses and help them recruit, hire and retain people with disabilities. In the region served by the Northwest Wisconsin Workforce Investment Board, Inc., Jeff Pooler has joined DVR as Business Services Consultants. DVR Business Service Consultants are available in every area of the state.

This approach - working with businesses as a partner in including people with disabilities in Wisconsin's workforce - will help DVR understand the hiring needs of Wisconsin businesses so that DVR can provide the appropriate training and support to job-seekers with disabilities.

Hiring a person with a disability can provide many benefits to the business and the DVR Business Services Consultants are available to help make sure that businesses are able to take advantage of those benefits.

Primarily, the Business Services Consultants will meet with local businesses to understand their business and human resource needs. With this knowledge, they can help DVR provide more effective pre-screening of DVR consumers - sending the business the job-seekers with disabilities whose skills and interests are a good fit for the business.

Besides assisting in direct hires, the Business Services Consultants are available as a resource for business, to help access the DVR services that are available to them. Those include:

  • Retention assistance for employees who experience disability, helping to keep current employees on the job.
  • Assisting businesses to take advantage of the financial incentives that are available for hiring people with disabilities.
  • Assisting businesses with making their locations more accessible not only for employees, but also for potential customers.
  • Providing no-cost training to businesses about disability and employment, including the Americans with Disability and diversity topics.

For more information about these services, please contact Jeff Pooler at (715) 415-5792 or Jeffery.pooler@dwd.wisconsin.gov

Business of the Year & Rising Star Awards

Every year, Northwest Wisconsin Workforce Investment Board, Inc. (NWWIB) takes the time to recognize outstanding business achievements. This year there were two businesses in particular that have demonstrated a high level of commitment to their product, workforce, and communities. NWWIB is pleased to present Field Logic the Business of the Year Award and Delta Diner the Rising Star Award.

Field Logic, Inc. is a nationally-recognized sporting goods manufacturer well-recognized for bringing innovative products to the archery industry. First among their industry-leading series of innovations is "The BLOCK", archery's first open-layered target. Since then, Field Logic has continued creating products that have cornered the market and quickly climbed to the number one position. Field Logic is constantly enhancing and improving not only their products, but their workforce as well. They provide their employees the tools and opportunities needed for growth.

The trend-setting corporation has begun developing Field Logic University (FLU), a program providing on-site training unique to their industry. Along with targeted in-services, FLU features guest speakers and one-on-one coaching sessions between human resources and supervisors. Topics include time management, interpersonal communication, and leadership. They provide their employees tools for growth and advancement. At Field Logic, approximately 75% of management and personnel have been promoted internally.

While building their people's skills and futures, Field Logic also participates in programs educating the future workforce. Last fall, Field Logic contributed to the inaugural "SEE IT. BE IT. Mythbusting Manufacturing tours." Students toured the industrial complex and saw first-hand their multiple career opportunities available within the industry.

Located near Iron River, WI, Delta Diner provides customers with a classic American, 1940s roadside diner restaurant experience. The customer experience at the Delta Diner is crafted from hundreds of big picture components from the drive to the destination, being greeted at the door by staff, and the diner's retro-designed booth and counter seating with all these components creating the stage for the experience to happen. The community has embraced both the diner's culture and philosophy, which is reflected in the company's ownership. Delta Diner has 22 customer LLC members who own 40% of the company. Members attend annual meetings and vote on important company decisions.

Recently, Delta Diner has taken on new initiatives to expand their services, including developing e-commerce to serve far away customers and launching the Blue Plate Lecture Series. The Blue Plate Lecture Series takes Delta Diner's concept of destination dining to a new level by offering a combination of both informative lectures and music events with each having themed dinner offerings to complement the events. Delta Diner has coordinated with faculty from Northland College, taking advantage of the scientific and cultural educational resources available and bringing these resources to the public.

NWWIB would like to congratulate both Field Logic and Delta Diner on receiving their awards and commends them for their contributions to their industry, workforce, and community.

Employment and job training programs have been cut by over $1 billion since 2010 and face deeper cuts as sequestration takes effect. These cuts aren't limited to employment and training programs. They affect a range of vital services that everyone relies on-including medical research, public health, education, and environmental protection. - Statement from National Skills Coalition

Sequestration is a word that has been thrown around in the media a lot today. But what is it? And, what does it mean for you and your day-to-day life? NDD United (Non-Defense Discretionary Programs United), a national coalition of 3,200 organizations co-convened by NSC, the Committee for Education Funding, and the Coalition for Health Funding has released a short video explaining the impacts of sequestration.
