It is hard to believe that one-third of the academic year has passed; fall trimester has come to a close. The season has been vacillating between fall and early winter--one day sweater weather, another day hard frost. So, too, do young adults some days try on potential grown-up responsibilities and, on other days, prefer their student roles as learners and discoverers. The photography class rushed outdoors to craft evidence of the first bits of snow, and other students found enough ammunition for a few snowballs.

The Admissions Team cordially invites prospective students and their families to attend an Open House. Open Houses begin in Orr Commons in the center of campus (follow signs) at 10:00 AM promptly. After brief welcoming remarks, you will tour our beautiful campus and receive a description of our programs. You will see a short video and participate in a discussion about the application process. Closing remarks will take place about 12:00. Please call 845-534-9860 to request more information or leave your name and telephone number to register.

Students Demonstrate College-Level Skills

Students May Opt for Extra Challenge in AP Courses

SKS offers ten Advanced Placement Courses which are certified by the College Board as offering college-level challenge to high school students. AP classes offered at SKS include AP English, AP Biology, AP Physics, AP Computer Science, AP Calculus, AP Statistics, AP Economics: Macro, AP Art History, AP Studio Art, and AP Psychology.

There are several advantages to junior and senior students who opt to take one or more of these difficult courses. For one thing, students who succeed in these classes demonstrate to themselves and to prospective colleges that they are ready for college-level work. Some colleges even grant college credits to students who show mastery of the material by scoring high on their AP Exams. This allows successful students to bypass introductory classes in college and enroll in more advanced courses.

Like all SKS classes, the AP classes average ten students, which provides an intimate venue for discussion and exchange of ideas. This can be much more meaningful than taking the class later in a huge college lecture hall.

Polina G '13, who is taking AP English and AP Psychology, commented, "It's really cool that I can exercise my free will to have this extra challenge and increase my knowledge of subjects I'm so interested in!"

Some Players and Coaches Describe Season as Best Ever

During the fall season The Storm King School saw spectacular growth in the department of athletics.  Because of the numbers of students participating on sports teams, three new teams were added to the program. The boys' junior varsity soccer program was re-born after a four-year hiatus, allowing boys to be on a team on which they were able to garner substantial playing time and gain valuable skills. The boys improved and ended the season on a winning note, defeating Faith Christian Academy 1-0.

The boys' varsity soccer team struggled through the middle of the season before putting together a strong finish and a dazzling playoff run in the Hudson Valley Athletic League (HVAL).  In the playoffs, the boys defeated Wooster School on a soggy field in the quarterfinal 4-2 before stunning Marvelwood School in the semifinal by the same score. This led to a re-match of last year's championship final at New York Military Academy (NYMA).  SKS boys playing on less than twenty-four hour's rest left everything they had on the NYMA field but came up short by the score of 5-4. The boys soccer team demonstrated the teamwork, tenacity, and gentlemanly conduct for which Storm King Teams are renowned.   Junior varsity volleyball was created because more than twenty girls signed up for the program.  This allowed coaches to form a developmental team to cultivate players for the future.

The fall season also saw the re-birth of girls' soccer as a varsity sport. The girls had a fantastic season, reminding everyone that we play sports because it's fun.

The high-spirited cross-country team continued to build on the past in that several runners completed personal best times this season.

The rowing team trained daily at the Newburgh Rowing Club and gained worthwhile experience in the development of this team program.

The varsity volleyball team played well throughout the season and showed improvement, defeating NYMA in the quarterfinals of the HVAL tournament before losing to eventual champion Marvelwood in the semifinal.

SKS Student and Teacher Run in 5K Charity Fundraiser

Tenth Grader Completes First in His Age Group

Cross country runner Anthony M '15 and his coach Kaitlin Nolan competed in the Cornwall Lions Harvest Run which began at the Storm King Firehouse and traversed the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson. The purpose of the race was to raise funds for Guiding Eyes for the Blind, an internationally accredited program, and the Hudson Valley Food Bank.

For Anthony and Ms. Nolan, the race was a fun challenge for a good cause. It was icing on the cake when Anthony placed first in his age group, and Ms. Nolan placed third in hers. Ms. Nolan and Anthony had made their own private wager and, as a result of Anthony finishing four minutes before his coach, she treated him to a Dunkin Donuts visit. Anthony had achieved his personal best of 20 minutes, 20 seconds earlier in the cross country season.

The quiet-spoken Anthony commented on how cool it was to support the program which trains service dogs for handicapped persons, and he also appreciated the chance to raise funds for the local food pantry. Three additional SKS student volunteers handed out water to racers and cheered them on. It was a fantastic way to spend a beautiful fall day.

In addition to the wide range of class-related field trips, sports, and club activities that take place Monday through Friday, each and every weekend SKS students are offered several additional enriching trips. At least one opportunity is offered in each of three categories: community service, outdoor adventure, and arts/cultural.

Community service this fall has included Habitat for Humanity builds and participation in fundraisers aimed to support a number of important charities. (See 5K above.)

Arts and cultural occasions have consisted of outings to the nearby Storm King Art Center sculpture park, trips to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, and patronizing a community theater production of The Drowsy Chaperone. (The theater utilized an airplane prop constructed by Storm King students for their production of the same title last spring.)

Outdoor adventure, which can be both an after-school or weekend activity, had a challenging and fun-filled season of hiking, rock-climbing, and exploring, learning the basics of camping, wilderness ethics, tree identification, and nature-based art, all the while discovering the Hudson Valley amidst the turning foliage, according to advisor Scott Simontacchi.  Advisor Jonathan Meisel added, "The two most remembered highlights of the season were our hiking tour through the Storm King Arts Center grounds with its awesome sculptural constructs, which inspired us to create our own 'natural' works of art, and the 5 mile hike around, over, and through Storm King Mountain, with its breathtaking views of our Hudson River."

SKS Food Pleases Palates

Chef Moises is a Culinary Institute of America Graduate

SKS students and staff consider themselves fortunate to enjoy meals that are so tasty, varied, and high in quality. When Chef Moises Ortega came on board more than a year ago, he made it his mission to increase student participation in dining hall fare by offering meals that were healthy and made from fresh ingredients, locally grown when possible. The remarkable result has included selections such as sautéed bok choy, cilantro chicken, citrus salmon, Udon shrimp stir-fry, sweet spicy eggplant, quesadillas, curry veggies and more. Chef Moises and his staff also provide appropriate selections for students who are vegetarians or have dietary needs such as gluten intolerance.

A typical lunch includes sandwiches made to order (with more than 4,320 possible combinations of breads, meats, cheeses, and vegetables), typically four hot selections, two homemade soups, an extensive salad bar, drinks, and dessert. In addition, the "Noodle Bar," with many possible combinations of noodles, meats, vegetables, and sauces, stir-fried to order by Chef Moses himself, is an additional and very popular offering. Chef Moises and his outstanding SKS dining fare were recently featured in the November 14, 2012, edition of the local newspaper, The Times Herald-Record.

Founded in 1867, The Storm King School celebrates a long tradition of helping students translate potential into success as they prepare for college and meaningful lives. Through academic classes, outstanding fine and performing arts, competitive and club sports, and interesting extracurricular activities, the faculty and staff offer students in grades 8-12 opportunities to enrich themselves through learning and confidence building. For college-bound students with learning differences, a small (22 students) program called The Mountain Center, offers specialized, differentiated instruction in up to four core classes. Mountain Center students are full participants in the SKS community. In addition, The Learning Center offers support to any SKS student who needs extra help with study and organizational skills. Boarding and day options are available.
