Superstorm Sandy created havoc throughout the northeastern U.S. last week, knocking out power to millions of households, causing damage and road closings, creating lines at gas pumps, etc. While the storm was approaching, SKS's administrative team took measures to ensure the safety and health needs of students. Classes were suspended as of October 29th, and most students went to the homes of their families and guardians.Fortunately, SKS's campus sustained only minimal damage, including a huge tree limb that was blown down and roof tiles scattered about.
For the eleven students who chose to remain on campus, generators provided heat and minimal lighting and power to dormitories, the stalwart kitchen crew provided meals, and water that had been reserved was put to use. Economics teacher Taras Ferencevych invited students to his house to roast marshmallows in his fireplace and make s'mores. A lighted basement provided an opportunity for students to begin working on a canoe-building project. Several students and teachers hiked in nearby Black Rock Forest. Another group, led by Physics Teacher Warren Mumford, trimmed trees, cut logs, and cleared branches that had fallen on the Sackett Trail in Black Rock Forest. They also had time to visit Echo Rock and view the skyline of NYC as well as experience the echo across Sutherland's Pond. Some students used the time to study or to work on college applications.
Throughout the five days following the storm, water, power, phones, and internet were restored to campus. Students began trickling back to campus on November 2nd in time to take their SATs, and most students had returned by November 5th, when classes resumed. With many people throughout the Northeast still waiting for power and other necessities, the SKS community feels fortunate and appreciative to all of those whose hard work and dedication helped us weather the storm.
The Admissions Team cordially invites prospective students and their families to attend an Open House. Open Houses begin in Orr Commons in the center of campus (follow signs) at 10:00 AM promptly. After brief welcoming remarks, you will tour our beautiful campus and receive a description of our programs. You will see a short video and participate in a discussion about the application process. Closing remarks will take place about 12:00. Please call 845-534-9860 to request more information or leave your name and telephone number to register.

Spirit Week Provides Opportunity to Display SKS Loyalty and Fun |

Homecoming Weekend Brings Alumni Back to Campus

Many students dressed in fun fare for Spirit Week, as a run-up to Homecoming Weekend. The weekend of October 5-7, the School welcomed the return of alumni to campus, including young alumni and wrestlers who were present for the raising of the 2011-12 HVAL Championship banner, and older alumni from decades ago. The wrestling team had finished the 2012 HVAL season with a perfect 6-0 record, defeating nationally-ranked Kiski School. SKS Community Views Many Heavenly Bodies |

Students Receive One-on-One Tutoring Through the Telescope
Warren Mumford and his physics and astronomy students are at it again. They have been gathering at SKS's Cobbs-Matthiessen Observatory for evening viewings of Globular Cluster M13, Elusive Ring Nebula, Lunar Terminator, Andromeda Galaxy, and more! Mr. Mumford, an enthusiastic member of two astronomical societies, is known for his ability to bring the sky down to a level that anyone can understand. As a matter of fact, not only has Mr. Mumford offered telescope viewings to everyone on campus, but he has also offered a series of astronomy workshops to teens and adults in the local community through the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum. This fall, Mr. Mumford is tinkering with a new camera that will allow viewers to capture what they see through the telescope. What a great opportunity for all SKS students!

Students Showcase Talents in Parents Weekend Performance |
| |
Piano, Vocals, Instrumentals, Bands, Videos, and Multimedia Leave Audience Clapping Wildly!
The Parents Weekend Performance on October 19th gave SKS students a chance to show off many developing skills. The evening began with Martin Smith's and Artist-in-Residence Jim Resink's piano students and vocal students gracing parents, friends, faculty and classmates with musical selections ranging from quite lovely and lilting to boisterous and energizing! The audience showed its appreciation between pieces by whispering the sounds of rustling leaves, as suggested, so as to not break the concentration of the musicians. Afterwards, enthusiastic clapping showed how impressed listeners were with the talents that students had displayed.
But there was much more to come in the way of a saxophone, clarinet, violin, guitars, videos, and even multimedia presentations! Frank Annunziata's SKS Creative Arts Center students had been busy. Audience applause rose in decibels at the array, from classic Beatles songs to creations written by students themselves, including a stop motion video, motion graphic design, and a video suspense thriller, all of which induced wild clapping from the audience! |
| | Founded in 1867, The Storm King School celebrates a long tradition of helping students translate potential into success as they prepare for college and meaningful lives. Through academic classes, outstanding fine and performing arts, competitive and club sports, and interesting extracurricular activities, the faculty and staff offer students in grades 8-12 opportunities to enrich themselves through learning and confidence building. For college-bound students with learning differences, a small (22 students) school-within-a-school program called The Mountain Center, offers specialized, differentiated instruction in up to four core classes. Mountain Center students are full participants in the SKS community. In addition, The Learning Center offers support to any SKS student who needs extra help with study and organizational skills. Boarding and day options are available.
