On Saturday, March 14th we open Jack Nichols: The 1940s to 60s Lithographs and cordially invite you to join us for our opening reception between 2pm-4pm.  This exhibition celebration will mark the last event in our current location on Avenue Road.  The time is now for change; we are expanding the gallery and re-locating to 24 Hazelton Avenue.  We have further news for you on this exciting front ahead in this issue, as well as more about our important upcoming Nichols exhibition and the spring solo ahead for longtime gallery favourite Ryan Price.

JACK NICHOLS (1921-2009)
The 1940s to 60s Lithographs
March 14 - 31 . 2015

Opening Reception: Saturday, March 14th | 2pm-4pm

Deeply humane and full of integrity, these prints, drawing and paintings are
a direct reflection of the artist himself.

-Marie Snopek, Curator 40 Years of Jack Nichols (1941-1981)
The Sarnia Public Library and Art Gallery

The classical beauty of Jack Nichols' figurative works is true to his work in all mediums.  It is in his lithography that his greatest strength of execution comes to light.  Exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1958, his lithographs remain a watershed moment in Canadian art history.

"I wanted to be artist before I knew what the word 'art' meant and I still don't know really what it means. I wanted to draw and put things down, I wanted to sing or play a musical instrument because I really felt most alive when I was doing that." -Jack Nichols

Nichols was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship in 1947, a prize at the Second International Exhibition of Drawing and Engraving in Lugano, Switzerland in 1952, and his works are part of public gallery collections across Canada.

Nichols' achievements as an artist are matched by his humanity and warmth of spirit, as his close friends and former Cabbagetown neighbours know.  We invite you to visit during the opening reception and throughout the run of the exhibition (March 14 - 31) to learn and see more about Jack Nichols, as well as to share your own stories and memories of one of Canada's greatest artists and minds.  Please click here to view additional available works.

Coinciding with the exhibition is the release of Gina Dineen's new short documentary film Jack Nichols: Mystery & Light

About as new and noteworthy as it gets!

As of April 1st we are expanding the gallery and re-locating to 24 Hazelton Avenue, right in the heart of the historic village of Yorkville.  A very short stroll from our current location, our new home on Hazelton Avenue sees us on Canada's most renowned gallery row.  Our love of the neighbourhood, its cultural significance, as well as its current future forward focus -- has us most happy to be in the middle of Yorkville with its beautiful buildings, park benches and unique village atmosphere.

Our new home will see us with new gallery hours to match, as the gallery will now open at 10am.  We officially wrap up at 49 Avenue Road at 5pm on Tuesday, March 31st and open in our new location at 10am on Wednesday, April 1st.

Bedtime Stories
April 9 - 25 . 2015

Please Save the Date

Opening Reception: Thursday, April 9th | 6pm-8pm

With fresh ideas brewing throughout the time since his last solo, Ryan Price will be showing Bedtime Stories as our first solo exhibition in our new location.  Many of us at the gallery collected the works of Ryan Price well before we started working together.  We think it a perfect fit for the spring season ahead and our new digs that Price marks our first official event at 24 Hazelton Avenue.  Please mark your calendars for an evening celebration with Ryan Price Thursday, April 9th from 6pm-8pm.

Jack Nichols' opening day and solo exhibition will take us through the month of March.  In addition to the outstanding lithographs, late drawings and mid-century oils of Nichols, we have many new works in fresh from artists' studios for you to enjoy as we roll out of winter and into spring.  We look forward to welcoming you at the gallery on Saturday, March 14th.  We equally look forward to being of help -- please be in touch with any questions, queries and requests you have about the gallery and the outstanding artists with whom we work.

See you soon.

All the best,
Tarah
