JACK NICHOLS (1921-2009)The 1940s to 60s LithographsMarch 14 - 31 . 2015Opening Reception: Saturday, March 14th | 2pm-4pm
Deeply humane and full of integrity, these prints, drawing and paintings are
a direct reflection of the artist himself.
-Marie Snopek, Curator 40 Years of Jack Nichols (1941-1981)
The Sarnia Public Library and Art Gallery
The classical beauty of Jack Nichols' figurative works is true to his work in all mediums. It is in his lithography that his greatest strength of execution comes to light. Exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1958, his
lithographs remain a watershed moment in Canadian art history.
"I wanted to be artist before I knew what the word 'art' meant and I still don't know really what it means. I wanted to draw and put things down, I wanted to sing or play a musical instrument because I really felt most alive when I was doing that." -Jack Nichols
Nichols was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship in 1947, a prize at the Second International Exhibition of Drawing and Engraving in Lugano, Switzerland in 1952, and his works are part of public gallery collections across Canada.
Nichols' achievements as an artist are matched by his humanity and warmth of spirit, as his close friends and former
Cabbagetown neighbours know. We invite you to visit during the opening reception and throughout the run of the exhibition (March 14 - 31) to learn and see more about
Jack Nichols, as well as to share your own stories and memories of one of Canada's greatest artists and minds. Please click

Coinciding with the exhibition is the release of Gina Dineen's new short documentary film
