Grateful for the year that was, we are equally thankful as we consider all that is ahead at the gallery in 2015.

Our new exhibition season begins Saturday, February 7th with renowned painter Brian Burke opening his 13th solo with Ingram Gallery.  Keeping it fresh and ever so intriguing, Burke's upcoming solo is comprised of two individual new series: Assumption and Cascando.  'Step-sisters, if you will', says Burke of this unique approach.  In March we look to one of Canada's art history benchmarks, the 1940s to 60s lithographs of Jack Nichols (1921-2009).  Nichols' blackest blacks and affinity for light are no better presented than in these important works.  Our complete exhibition schedule for the year is online and makes for ease in circling your calendar and planning your visits to the gallery.

BRIAN BURKE (R.C.A.)
Assumption + Cascando
February 7 - 21 .  2015

Exhibition opens at 11am | Saturday, February 7

Assumption for me refers to the area of belief mid-way between conviction
and doubt. - Brian Burke, 2015

From the quiet of studio comes big ideas.  In our lead-up conversations with Brian Burke from his studio in Lucerne, it was evident that the artist's respect for paint and his cultivated eye make for a great pairing.  So too does his 2015 take on a solo exhibition - combining two series into one great exhibition.  The new works carry on his history of using imagery which belies an existentialist world view.

Burke's beautifully rendered single figure paintings offer much to contemplate in a warm palette of stunning colour and range of scale.  Notable is that the ground and medium of his work are as important as the reactions they illicit.  As the artist says of his work: but, for me, the paintings are paint on canvas, nothing more.

Brian Burke was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island in 1952.  He studied design at Holland College (1971-73) and Fine Art at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (1974).  He is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts.  His work has been exhibited in numerous public and private galleries and is in public, corporate and private collections in Canada, the U.S., Europe, and Asia.  He lives and works in Lucerne, Switzerland and Prince Edward Island, Canada.

JACK NICHOLS (1921- 2009)

The 1940s to 60s Lithographs
March 14 - 31 . 2015

Opening Reception: Saturday, March 14th | 2pm - 4pm

The Estate of Jack Nichols supports both the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), as well as Jewish Family & Child Service of Greater Toronto.  When they visit the gallery, friends who knew Nichols often discuss his generous spirit.  He was a refreshingly unique and enigmatic man and his story is still being told.  Paired with the exhibition in March is the soon to be released short documentary film on the artist, Jack Nichols: Mystery & Light directed by Gina Dineen.  In addition to his highly praised lithographs, the exhibition will also feature Nichols' paintings and drawings.

To the south gallery walls for the month of February are many newly available works by those that fill the pages of Canada's art history books.  A Georgian Bay late A.Y. Jackson hangs above a limestone sculpture by his dear canoeing friend E.B. Cox.  Stanley Cosgrove and Henri Masson capture the romance of their home province of Quebec through rich landscapes.  Works by Marthe Rakine, F.N. Loveroff, F.S. Coburn, Carl Schaefer and Florence Vale round out the collection.  Each day sees us discussing Painters Eleven, Jack Bush and Harold Town in particular.  We have many great new art books available at the gallery, including signed 1st editions of Nowell's new title on Town and the National Gallery of Canada's catalogue for their current, and excellent, Jack Bush exhibition.

The dynamic nature of our working with the Canadian print collection of Ernst & Young sees newly available works to the gallery each month.  Please click here to view the 1st release, 2nd release, 3rd release and 4th release.  We really enjoy the diversity of great Canadian art represented in this collection.  We are equally fond of the art of printmaking itself, and are thankful for all the great discourse we have had in recent months with respect to these pieces.

Please join us for Brian Burke's opening day on Saturday, February 7th.  As Burke is in studio in Lucerne, Switzerland this winter, he is not able to attend.  Although he will be missed, his works speak for themselves.

We are looking forward to welcoming you!  Whatever questions and requests you may have, please let us know in person, by phone, email, twitter or carrier pigeon -- we're serious.  It is what we are here for and we love to help.

With best wishes,
Tarah
