First Person - Updating to Windows 8.1
Microsoft released the Windows 8.1 update last week and, like all self-respecting techies, I wanted - check that, needed - to give the latest version of Windows a try. So, I did what any rational person would do; I updated someone else's computer. After all, in case the process went awry, I did not want my computer to suffer the consequences. Following is my first person account of the update process from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1.

Editing the Registry: Do I Dare?

Sometimes software behaves differently than you might want it to. As an example, for years when you would alter a value in Excel, the cells containing formulas using that value would simply update. When Microsoft released Office 2013, this changed, much to the chagrin of many seasoned Excel users. Now Excel 2013 uses animations that "roll" the updated value into the cells that change. Repeatedly, I hear people complain about the new method, which can be distracting and gives the perception of slowed performance. Additionally, many people would love to alter the behavior of the operating system just a bit, to place limits or save superfluous steps; no matter how long and hard they search, they cannot find a setting to remove the undesirable behavior.
