New Product by Fermentation CreationPeople today seem to make great efforts to kill the many germs they come in contact with and are quite concerned about the many pathogenic organisms that seem to make news headlines. With all the attention on these harmful organisms, we may not realize that most micro-organisms are quite beneficial and even play a critical role in supporting our immune
function and protecting us on a daily basis.
In fact, there are more organisms in us and on us than people that are in the world. About 10 trillion organisms, known as "normal flora" or friendly bacteria", inhabit a healthy colon. Their presence prevents harmful organisms from gaining a foothold in the body. Any pathogen, or harmful organism trying to settle in the intestine would have to first contend with this large army within. The "friendly bacteria" not only keep the colon clean and healthy but also improve digestion and elimination, produce essential fatty acids, B vitamins, vitamin K as well as antibiotics, increase the bio-availability of minerals and have a stimulating effect on the immune system. The key to good health is gut health and the key to gut health is the presence of friendly bacteria.
Diet, stress, illness and the heavy use of antibiotic affect the balance of the normal gut flora. As Americans we tend to live under stress, eating overly processed and highly sweetened foods and beverages, and often must rely on powerful antibiotics to fight our diseases. Antibiotic, though often necessary, kill the good organisms as well as the bad. It is imperative that the friendly organisms be restored.
The number one way to restore these friendly organisms and improve gut health is by adding more fermented foods to your healthy diet of real whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables.
Fermented and cultured foods naturally contain the very beneficial organisms that inhabit a healthy gut. Yogurt and kefir or cultured dairy products may be the first foods that come to mind when we talk of eating fermented foods. But there is a whole world of fermented vegetables waiting to be discovered.
