Ed PropstEd Propst, Education Division Chairperson

Hello. I 'm Ed Propst and I currently serve as the Education Division cabinet chair for the current United Way campaign. I have served in this position since August 2006 and hope to continue in this position for many more years. I am also the principal at the Harrison County Alternative Learning Center and have been a teacher since 1979 and an administrator in Harrison County schools since 1996.  I am proud to report that Harrison County Board of Education employees have been stanch supporters of United Way over the years.

Why do I serve? Because many of the 22 member agencies of United Way have touched my own family, my church family or families of students that attend Harrison County Schools. Some of those agencies that have touched my life are: Boy Scouts of America, American Red Cross, CRISS-CROSS, Bi-County Nutrition, Big Brothers Big Sisters, CASA, Sheltered Workshop, YMCA, Health Access, Hope, Inc., Literacy Volunteers and People's Hospice. I challenge everyone reading this article to reflect on how many United Way agencies have touched your life or the lives of others you know.

How can you help? By making a donation or a pledge to United Way or by participating in the Dining Out program mentioned elsewhere in this newsletter. Also, the Kroger Cares Card program, gift wrap booth at the mall or volunteering during the National Day of Action (usually in June) are great ways to support United Way.

It is a privilege to serve on this cabinet with so many caring and dedicated individuals striving to make a difference in the quality of Harrison County families.  Please help ensure that all United Way member agencies are able to continue their services by giving what you can.

2013 Mid-Campaign Report Luncheon
This year's Mid-Campaign Report Luncheon, October 25, 2012, was more than just numbers.  Jeff Barger, (above) Campaign Chairman and each cabinet member present made it personal by sharing their individual reasons for serving United Way of Harrison County. But first the numbers............as of the report luncheon, 55% of the $830,000 goal had been met.
The personal reasons for individual involvement are a big part of why our campaign cabinet volunteers. Jeff Barger sets the stage as he recounts his experience after the death of his father last year. Jeff discovered that his father had been actively involved in the United Way in his home town in Pennsylvania. His father's approach to giving was that if someone was in need, you help them, after all we are all just "neighbors helping neighbors."  And a theme was born.
Hear the rest of the story by accessing this year's Campaign Video.

Agency Spotlight

Harrison County Child Advocacy Center

There are new faces at the Harrison County Child Advocacy Center. On September 4th, 2012, Shelly Giaquinto began her first day as the Executive Director. Shelly brings over seventeen years of financial experience from public accounting and the non-profit sector. As the former CFO of a behavioral health facility, she is well-versed in the financial aspects of state funding sources and reporting requirements.

Jayne Landacre began her work as the Family Advocate for the agency on October 15, 2012. She previously worked in direct care with at-risk youth before moving into grant writing and public relations for a local non-porfit.  "I will do everything I can to make sure the children coming to the Child Advocacy Center get the support and services they need," Jayne said. "Nothing is more important than protecting and nurturing our children."
