Rebecca Davis , Retail Division Chairperson
They say that everyone has a story to tell. Today I would like to take a few moments to tell you my account of how I became involved with United Way. " Involved with United Way" means becoming an active, contributing, informed volunteer which I have become.
There was a time not too many years ago when I did not know enough about United Way to truly be a committed contributor then I was asked if I would consider serving as a Loaned Executive to United Way on Dominion's behalf. As part of the orientation, I was included in scheduled visits to various member agencies. That is when my eyes were opened to the broad age range of people served - from young to old and the various types of services provided to members in our community.
Over the years, I have been asked to fill-in when someone was needed to do a presentation to a group of employees which exposed me to the generosity of the community. Yes, we have a goal to meet but it is not always about the size of the contribution. I have talked to and called companies of all sizes and am reminded that everything is relative and that every contribution counts.
This year I began as the chairperson for the Automotive Section but was quickly moved into leading the Retail Division. What an opportunity to raise awareness! There still are companies, especially small businesses that are not familiar with United Way. I hope that I have helped to take some of the mystery out of it by stating the facts about the structure of our United Way campaign and how their contributions assist with the mission of our 22 member agencies.
I am pleased to be a part of the progress of this year's campaign. It takes all of us to make it work. Sometimes it is being in the right place at the right time, sometimes it is how it is said and sometimes who says it. Each of us has a role. Mine is being a volunteer - an active, contributing, informed volunteer.

Agency Spotlight
HOPE, Inc. | |
By harnessing our collective influence through public awareness events, social media, mass marketing, celebrity appeal, and a unified demonstration of support, our efforts, our voices and our impact are stronger.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month which evolved from the "Day of Unity" held in October 1981 and conceived by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The intent was to connect advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children. The Day of Unity soon became an entire week devoted to a range of activities conducted at the local, state, and national level. The activities conducted wer as varied and diverse as the program sponsors but had common themes:
- Mourning those who have died because of domestic violence
- Celebrating those who have survived
- Connecting those who work to end violence
These three themes remain a key focus of Domestic Violence Awareness Month today. First observed in October 1987, the initiation of the first national domestic violence toll-free hotline was also established. In 1989, the U.S. Congres passed Public Law 101-112 designating October of that year as National Domestic Vilence Awareness Month. It has passed every year since.
On a local level, South Harrison High School home football games, October 5 and 12, awareness activities are planned. October 11, 2012, at 9:00 a.m. the Harrison County Commission will issue a proclamation in support of ending domestic violence in Harrison County.
HOPE, Inc.'s Domestic Violence Support Group meets Fridays at 12:00 p.m., noon, in the Clarksburg office located in Koupal Towers. Call (304)624-9835 for more information or directions. HOPE, Inc. offers a free, confidential and professionally-facilitated support group for adult survivors of domestic violence.

Elliot Stache Chooses United Way | |
In order to complete his Associate Degree in Network Security Software, Elliot Stache needed to complete 60 work hours in a related field. When given a choice he researched United Way and decided that it would be a place he would like to complete his externship. While Elliot was a little hesitant about what he would do for United Way, by the end of his 60 hours we are all in agreement that he blew our expectations away. He will be awarded his degree from WV Junior College on November 18, 2012. When asked about his plans for the future he stated that his "dream job" would be helping to create video games. Congratulations, Elliot and we wish you well. Thank you for all of your volunteer hours!
