Chairman

2013 Campaign Corner

--Jeanie Hardesty,

Stonewall Jackson Leadership Co-Chair

As you read the list of the twenty-two agencies helped by the Harrison County United Way you can see how vivid, varied and urgent the needs in our community are. There are health and dental care needs; hunger and the need for nutritious meals; the desire and need to become literate; homelessness; youth who need guidance and purpose; those who need disaster assistance; the abused; those who need but cannot afford legal assistance. The list is long and the needs are many.

The members of the Stonewall Jackson Leadership Club play a vital role through their gifts of $500 and over. Since its inception in 1996 the Stonewall Jackson Leadership Club has grown year over year. In recent campaigns, donors have contributed over 40% of the annual campaign goal.

What a powerful, positive group this is!  My co-chairs, Wendy Madden and Jacquie Schirripa, join me in asking that you consider a gift of $500 to this year's United Way campaign and become a part of this leadership group. The 2013 United Way campaign goal is $830,000. Every dollar you give to the United Way is allocated to our member agencies through a stringent and thorough vetting process. You can be confident that your contribution will have a profound impact in our community by making it better and stronger. Please consider joining us as members of the Stonewall Jackson Leadership Club.

The 2013 Stonewall Jackson Leadership Club will be posted in the Clarksburg Exponent-Telegram beginning the weekend of September 8-9, 2012.

Agency Spotlight

CRISS CROSS, INC.

In case you didn't know, CRISS-CROSS is an acronym for Consumer Referral and Information Service System for Citizens, Resources and Organizations Seeking Solutions. For more than 30 years, CRISS-CROSS, Inc. has assisted people in need. The agency links people with resources and develops programs and services with community input and support to address unmet needs.

CRISS-CROSS, Inc.'s Information and Referral program just finished up their annual backpack project through a partnership with Walgreens. 115 backpacks filled with supplies were distributed to local students in need.

The agency moves straight from getting children off to a great start for the school year to the holiday assistance program. Representatives from local churches, United Hospital Center and Target met during the last week of August to begin the planning process for this holiday season. The purpose of the holiday assistance effort is to provide food baskets or gift cards to those which may not have the resources to put together a traditional holiday meal on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas or Easter. In addition, Christmas gifts are provided to children in need. Donors Christmas packages usually include an outfit, pajamas and a toy which aligns with the child's interest as specified in the application completed by a parent at the CRISS-CROSS office.

The program is well publicized through posting of flyers, email blasts by the United Way, commercial PSA's provided by Time Warner, local newspapers, the Community Calendars provided by WBOY and WDTV and Facebook.

HARRISON COUNTY SCHOOLS

 WELCOME UNITED WAY

HCS

Susan Collins, Superintendent of Harrison County Schools cleared the path for United Way's ability to reach all of the principals, teachers and other Harrison County Board of Education employees as she affirmatively responded to Ed Propst, Alternative Learning Center Principal and Education Division Chair and welcomed Campaign Chair, Jeff Barger and the United Way staff to this school year's first principal's meeting.

All in attendance heard about this year's campaign goal from Jeff Barger and agreed to distribute campaign brochures and pledge forms to their staff. Volunteers at each school were assigned and presentations scheduled.  Our member agencies took on the task of presenting United Way's mission and goals to each school and they did it in 2 days!
