2013 Campaign Corner

--Melanie Chancey, Campaign Vice Chair

 Melanie Chancey

Hello, I'm Melanie Chancey and I am honored to be serving the United Way as 2013 Vice Campaign Chair and Healthcare Division Chair. While wearing two hats throughout the campaign appears daunting, the support from so many volunteers makes it much easier to accomplish our goals. Some of our volunteers are veteran supporters; some new to the campaign this year, some have served before and have returned to help again!

The Healthcare Division has been near and dear to my heart for several years, as such I would like to personally thank my team of volunteers for their dedication and hard work. Our committed volunteers consist of Jennifer Dodrill, Joann Barger, Gina Sharps, Rose Trupo, Tina Williams, Jackie Brumage, Susan Swiger and Crystal McIntyre.

HEALTH ACCESS, INC.

Every month during 2012 we will be featuring one of our United Way agencies, their work, upcoming events and news.

STATE OF EMERGENCY IS CALL TO ACTION FOR HEALTH ACCESS
When tragedy strikes, a community pulls together. There is no better example of this than Health Access, Inc.,  a free medical clinic providing primary care and prescriptin medication to low income, uninsurehealth accessd adults residing in Harrison and Doddridge Counties.  The recent storms and resulting power outages were challenging to many but for a moment consider the insulin-dependant person which requires refrigeration for their life sustaining medication.

Jim Harris, Executive Director, reported that they were compelled to go above and beyond the scope of normal service to provide safe insulin to at least two persons that were not regular patients of Health Access, Inc.  These persons lost their insulin supply due to lack of refrigeration and could not get refills at their pharmacy which was also without electricity.

Health Access was also able to secure a supply of donated tetanus vaccine for anyone involved in the clean-up work.  JIm Harris stated that they were "blessed to have power throughout the time after the storm" and they "were open for patients everyday."  He commended his staff who reported to work everyday even though they had no power at home. A great staff!

With open hearts, the clinic encouraged those without power to come into the clinic for respite from the heat. The lobby and waiting area "stayed pretty full during those days."

Upcoming Event - Annual Flea Market
