 MARGARET STOUT

 OUR NEW ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

May 14, 2012....my first official day as an employee of the United Way of Harrison County! I am pleased and excited to say hello to the community and share a little about myself as I begin my role as Assistant Director.

After an 18 year career in the banking industry, I was presented with an opportunity to serve the community in a very defined, organized way - the United Way. I have been a supporter of United Way throughout my years of employment and volunteered on several levels. I have had the opportunity to introduce the United Way annual campaign to my previous coworkers and share my passion for the organization.

Having served several years on the Grants Committee, an appreciation for the volunteerism and time commitment required by those individuals has been deeply planted in me as an individual. I am challenged by the 2013  Campaign and look forward to learning about all of the processes that assist in getting us to our annual goal.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve you!

                               PROJECT ISAAC

HEALTHY HARRISON COUNTY KIDS

On May 2,  the  Healthy Harrison County Kids community impact program of the United Way  concluded the year's activities with  Project ISAAC at West Milford Elementary School. We had a wonderful time with this great group of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders every Wednesday afternoon throughout this school year.

We have had the opportunity to learn about fitness and nutrition through the generous support of several community partners.

Our sincerest thanks to all our wonderful partners:

  • Pierpont Community College and Technical Center,  Pam Hamilton and the nutrition interns that came several times to provide fun activities about fruits, veggies and My Plate.
  • Danielle Finstermacher and her enthusiasm teaching the children all about being a runner.
  • Ben Hardesty and Bob Steptoe for their exciting presentation on mountain climbing.
  • Erin Beck and Hope, Inc. for their wonderful presentations on peer pressure, boundaries and respect.
  • Dr. Veltri's presentation on  good dental hygiene.
  • The  Harrison County YMCA for karate classes and the great end of year field trip to the YMCA on Lowndes Hill.
  • To everyone who came out and helped with our Family Night Event.

My personal thanks goes to Avis Caynor and all of the fabulous teaching staff that made my year at Project ISAAC such a joy. I could not have done this without their input, patience and assistance.

We made snacks, did blind taste tests and planted vegetables and as you can tell from the picture, we not only survived, we had FUN!

Thanks, kids for a very fun and exciting year!

AGENCY SPOTLIGHT

HARRISON COUNTY CASA PROGRAM, INC.

Every month during 2012 we will be featuring one of our agencies, their work, upcoming events and news.

You can BE the DIFFERENCE in the life of a child

Every child has limitless potential that can only be met with the support of caring adults in their lives. No matter what the circumstances may be, a caring person can make the difference for a child who has been abused or neglected.

CASA is a program where trained court appointed volunteers represent the best interest of an abused or neglected child for whom placement is being determined by the court. A CASA volunteer acts as a fact finder of the child's best interest, providing a judge with valuable information about the child to help the court make a sound decision about the child's future.

In your community there are people who are making a difference in the lives of children. For many of them, a CASA volunteer is the first person in their lives they can count on. CASA works for kids because caring people are willing to offer unconditional support.
Everyone has a gift they can share to make the difference for an
abused or neglected child. Volunteer, make a contribution or donate your expertise.

For more information contact CASA at 304-623-5749 or visit their website at www.hcwvcasa.org where you can "like" them on Facebook then make sure you see the video by Dr. Phil at their Facebook page.

CASA works to keep kids happy and safe for a lifetime.
