Sara Aman
 2012 Campaign Chair

United Way of Harrison County, Inc. impacts the community by addressing critical needs every day. United Way funded programs cross the life-line of our community; feeding, sheltering, and protecting our most vulnerable citizens, as well as offering prevention, mentoring and support services. Dollars that are raised in Harrison County stay in Harrison County. United Way's oversight is provided by a local volunteer board of directors whose charge is to ensure fiscal integrity and transparency.

As the 2012 Campaign quickly winds down, we are just over 95% of our goal of $821,000 and 2% behind the amount raised last year at this time.  I am depending on those in our community who can, to come to our aid and help the United Way help our community.  I feel certain that our caring community will not let us down, our twenty four agencies whose needs are so great are counting on us.  They mentor the youth, feed the elderly and the hungry and provide shelter for the homeless. They provide health and dental care to those without insurance, a place for the disabled to find work, and protection for the abused.

My sincere thanks goes out to my  Campaign Cabinet and all of  our community volunteers who gave so generously of their time and talents.   The biggest thank you goes to Marie and the United Way staff of Cathie, Kalama and Susan for the outstanding job they do every day.  Words cannot express how vital they are to our campaign and our United Way mission.  On behalf of the campaign board, staff and the twenty four agencies that make up the United Way family, thank you to the generous donors of this community!

AGENCY SPOTLIGHT
 HEALTH ACCESS

Every month during 2012 we will be featuring one of our agencies, their work, upcoming events and news.

Health Access has been providing health care to the uninsured poor in Harrison and Doddridge Counties since 1992.  Located on Washington Avenue in Clarksburg, the clinic offers comprehensive medical care and pharmacy service to approximately 500-600 clients a month.

Clinic Director, Jim Harris is joined by a staff of nine full and part-time medical professionals .  Health Access is fortunate to have ten medical professionals from the community that volunteer their time at the clinic, while 27 area medical specialists provide care via referral appointments on a voluntary basis.

Health Access is also an active partner in several community initiatives  that provide services and education to assist the underserved in the community to learn skills that help them to inprove their health and participate as active members of their own healthcare team.  Health Access serves as a site for BCCSP, providing lifesaving breast cancer and cervical cancer screening.

For the third year, Health Access will be joining several other community partners to present Harrison We Can This program is a free six week program that provides, fitness, nutrition and education on healthy lifestyles.  This year the program will again meet at the Harrison County Parks and Recreation and 4-H Center beginning February 23rd and continuing for six consecutive weeks.  More information will follow.

Health Access will be celebrating their 20th Anniversay during 2012 with several events planned to celebrate and recognize their work in the community.  Again this year Mapplewool Senior Living Community has selected Health Access to receive proceeds from their Annual Las Vegas Night event set for Friday, April 13, 2012.

United Way Is Going Green

2012 is a Leap Year!  For the United Way of Harrison County, it is for us too.  We are taking a big leap to go "green".  All applicants for the 2013 funding cycle will be submitting  applications online.  Not only are we saving paper in this initial step but we are taking it one step further and providing each member of the Grants Committee with online access to each agency's information.  In years past each of the 27 members of the Grants Committee were given a 3 ring binder, approximately 3 inches thick.  By moving the process online, we will be saving approximately 125 LBS of paper annually.  Historically, that paper was recycled.   However, if we can eliminate the need for it in the first place, we will further be conserving our resources.  To recycle is "green" but eliminating the need to is the highest level of "going green" we can achieve.

 2013 Grants Committee Chair

      Thank-A-Thon

The United Way will hold our annual Thank-a-Thon on February 15th and 16th from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This is our opportunity to call and thank our donors for helping make our 2012 Campaign a success. "We will attempt to call every donor for whom we have a home phone number, regardless of the amount of their gift", according to campaign chair, Sara Aman.  "No amount is too small, every dollar is important to our campaign".

A special thanks to Wayne Northey and the staff at AAA for lending us their offices and phones for these two evenings.
