70TH ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATION/GREECE

The 70th Anniversary Commemoration/Greece, a community event in memory of all those who perished inside and outside of Greece during WWII, will be held on three Sundays - April 26, May 3, and May 17. The community organization co-sponsors AHEPA, American Hellenic Council, Greek Heritage Society of Southern California, Hellenic Library, Hellenic University Club and Los Angeles Greek Film Festival, and the institutional sponsors, Museum of Tolerance and Pasadena City College, have joined together to support these special events.

May 3rd at the William and Jane Bristol Civic Auditorium in Bellflower will feature a staged reading of the one-act play, THE WAY..., written by Iakovos Kambanellis, the "father of contemporary Greek theater" and a camp survivor.  Katerina Kambanelli, his daughter, will be traveling from Greece for this special program.  There will be a panel discussion with Rabbi Daniel Bouskila, Director of the Sephardic Educational Center, and Fr. John Bakas from St. Sophia Cathedral.  Dr. Gail Holst-Warhaft, Cornell University, will speak about Mr. Kambanellis' contribution to Modern Greek literature and read from the autobiographical liberation novel/memoir, Mauthausen.   Mezzo-soprano Lina Orfanos will be joining us from New York to perform The Mauthausen Cantata, accompanied by Bob Luna, piano.

MY CHILD - MOTHERS OF WAR BEGINS LA RUN!
 
Jean Smart, Frances Fisher, Mimi Rogers and Melina Kanakaredes will appear in My Child - Mothers of War, a play by LAGFF Co-Founder, Angeliki Giannakopoulos. The play is based on the true stories of mothers whose lives were radically changed when their sons and daughters were sent to fight the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

 

Presented by Human Revolution Entertainment, the play opens next month at the prestigious Hudson Backstage Theatre in Los Angeles (6530 Santa Monica Blvd. Hollywood, 90039).
